Voter Registration is Catching Up to the Digital Age

0
0

Every election season, we're all encouraged—from every direction—to put in our vote. But it seems like the hoops we have to jump through to make that happen can sometimes feel too stressful on top of everything else that comes with college life. Many of you might vaguely remember filling out a voter registration form at some point in high school. However, if you attend an out-of-state college, you'll probably need to register to vote specifically in the state in which you currently reside to vote in the upcoming elections (unless you're planning on flying or driving back to your hometown just to cast a ballot). You'll probably be relieved to hear that as of last year, twenty states now offer online voter registration, making it easier than ever before to register! While most all college campuses usually provide voter registration tables in common quad areas around election season, we're guessing many of you were probably too busy running off to class to stop by, or simply didn't want to face another written assignment. This resource not only makes it simpler; it's also helping to make registration more accessible to certain populations that were previously neglected, such as persons with disabilities and non-English speakers. If that isn't an incentive enough for states to adopt this tool, online registration can also save states millions of dollars in the implementation of this system. Talk about a win-win situtation!

The map below will help you figure out if the state in which you attend school provides online registration:

voting

If your state isn't highlighted, no worries. There are still several (totally manageable!) ways to register. All states provide a form you can download off of their board of elections website, and all you have to do is complete it and mail it in before the deadline. If that's too difficult, eleven states (including D.C.) also offer the holy grail for busy college students: same-day voter registration. Essentially if you can get yourself to a voting center, you can vote even if you forgot to pre-register.

As for motivation, we hope that you will have more than enough when we remind you that issues such as student debt and federal aid, same-sex marriage rights, taxes, the environment and healthcare will all be on table in this year's legislative agenda, in preparation for the 2016 presidential race. These are policies that will affect every aspect of our lives, so be sure to make your voice heard!

15 Problems Only Curly-Haired Girls Understand

0
0

The life of a curly haired-girl is far from easy! Here are 15 problems that our straight-haired friends will never understand.

1. Accidentally cutting your hair too short and looking like a Chia pet.

2. And having bangs? Forget it.

3. Humidity.

4. As soon as you walk out the door on a hot summer day, your hair goes from this...

...to this.

5. Those days when you wake up looking like a crazed animal.

6. Trying every anti-frizz product known to man, to no avail.

7. Waiting all day for your hair to dry.

8. When people compliment your straightened hair and you don't know whether to be flattered or insulted.

9. The horror of "crunchy" curls.

10. Good hair days are far and few between.

11. You expect your curls to look like this...

12. ...but they really look like this.

13. Getting your hair cut by someone who doesn't understand your hair type.

14. Listening to your friend complain that her hair is too straight.

15. People telling you they wish they had your curls.

5 Pieces of Clothing that Accurately Display Our Serious Commitment to Coffee

0
0

Tired of those judgmental looks from your friends as you gulp down your fifth cup of coffee before noon? Ever wished there was such a thing as a coffee I.V.? Is Lorelai Gilmore your spirit animal? If yes, you are officially #addicted to coffee. Use your mouth to drink more coffee and let your outfit explain your addiction to the haters.

1. Explain your priorities

This shirt ($14.90) properly communicates the order of your priorities. As in, yes, I would love to wake up and put clothes on but first, coffee.

2. It's not about what you want...

For the times when your need for coffee is a bit more urgent, this Wildfox Couture sweatshirt ($110) illustrates that you don't want coffee. You NEED coffee.

3. What happens when you don't get coffee

For the days when there's no coffee in sight, wear this Hollister tee ($9.99) to let those around you know that there's just simply no way for you to be happy. Facebook status changed to "depresso."

4. Hey, it's nobody's fault!

On the days when you've "accidentially" had a little too much coffee, wear this Wet Seal tank ($16.90) so people know you are not to blame. Blame it on the coffee.

5. Coffee is what makes the world go round

To explain your true source of happiness in life (and to stealthily store extra K-cups), grab this Dogeared pouch ($24). People will never have to guess what gifts to give you ever again.

Song Stuck in Your Head? Do This

0
0

We’ve all been there. Your new favorite song, or maybe even a catchy tune you hate, is stuck in your head for hours on end (“gotta get down on Friday,” anyone?). Now, science may have found a way to fix the problem.

Just chew gum.

New research published in the Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology suggests that chewing gum could interfere with musical memories. This is because chewing gum disrupts the “articulatory motor programming,” or the muscles involved in speech.

An experiment done by researchers at the University of Reading tested the theory. Participants listened to “Play Hard” by David Guetta. They had to report any time they thought about the song—first, while trying to suppress the song from their memory, and then while allowing their thoughts to wander. Afterwards, researchers conducted a second experiment similar to the first, except participants reported both when they thought of the song and when they heard the song play in their heads.

The participants in both experiments agreed that chewing gum helped to get rid of that pesky song stuck in their heads. Gum chewing significantly reduced how often they thought of the song and how often they heard the songs playing in their heads.

Researchers then tested the effects of any motor activity, instead of only an articulatory motor activity. The original experiment was repeated for the song “Payphone” by Maroon 5. One group in the test tapped their fingers, while another group chewed gum. Although the tapping helped to get rid of the mental songs, chewing gum was more effective.

The theory came from an anonymous online post, where many odd—but sometimes groundbreaking—ideas originate. So, the next time you find yourself humming the chorus to a Pitbull or Meghan Trainor song, go ahead and reach for that pack of Double Bubble you have stuffed in your purse.

7 Guys You Should NEVER Date

0
0

You’ve tested the dating pool by going to frat parties, scoping out club meetings and looking extra cute for class in the hopes that you’ll catch the attention of that campus cutie who sits across from you, but finding a quality guy can be harder than it looks.

We all know the pickings can be slim on college campuses, and while every collegiette has different standards when it comes to choosing her guy, there’s one thing we can all agree we want to avoid: drama. While we can’t exactly find your dream guy for you, Her Campus is here to help you with a list of guys to avoid while searching for potential boyfriends.

While these rules aren’t set in stone, follow these guidelines to avoid the dramatic consequences that tend to come with dating these guys:

1. Your RA

While it’s your resident assistant’s job to make you feel as comfortable as possible in your dorm, dating him can cross the line and become a little too comfortable. While it may start out as what seems like the ideal situation (he lives down the hall!), it could backfire if things don’t work out.

“Last semester I was hooking up with my RA and I thought we were going to date, but he ended things with me and it got so awkward,” says Michelle, a freshman at the University of Delaware. “I see him every day and just look down. The mandatory floor meetings he runs every week are so uncomfortable now!”

2. Your TA

Having a hot teaching assistant makes that 8 a.m. chemistry class so much more tolerable, right? While dating a TA may not seem as bad as dating a professor because he’s still a student, it can be seen as unethical and should definitely wait until after the class is over. Plus, if you decide he’s not your Prince Charming, do you really want your grade lying in the hands of an angry ex?

3. Your Friend’s Ex

This is the girl code we learn from day one: your friend’s ex-boyfriend is off-limits.

“I’ve always had a crush on my friend’s ex-boyfriend. They had been broken up for over a year when we finally hooked up, so I didn’t think it would be a big deal,” says Lexi, a junior at the University of Michigan. “I immediately told her about it and asked if she would be upset if it happened again. She said yes, so I backed off, but our friendship hasn’t been the same since.”

Dating a friend’s ex is practically guaranteed to lead to drama—or even the end of a friendship.

4. Your Ex's Roommate

No matter how much you may like him, we can’t imagine anything more awkward than spending R&R time with your boyfriend… and your ex. Together. In one room. A relationship should be a comfortable experience, and by starting things up with someone who’s close to your ex (in both a “close friends” and a “close quarters” sense), tension will be created right from the start.

5. Your Dorm-mate

Dating someone right next door can seem like a perfect (and convenient!) option in college. Who doesn’t want to see their beau every day for the rest of the school year? However, there are two majors problems with this: one, too much time together may not always benefit your relationship, and two, if it ends, you’ll have to see him every time you walk in and out of your door.

“Dating my neighbor was the worst idea I’ve ever had,” says Sara*, a freshman at the University of Delaware. “After we broke up, he’d give me dirty looks in the hallway all the time and cause a huge scene any time I brought another guy home. It was terrible.”

6. The Campus Player

Every collegiette thinks she can totally change the guy who openly embraces single life by hooking up with everyone in sight. But before you go for this challenge, think about it—do you really want to be with someone with wandering eyes who is infamous around campus for his hook-ups?

7. Your Friend’s Brother

If your friend is a protective sister or brother, things could get weird with this one. “I dated my best friend’s brother for a little while,” says Arielle, a sophomore at the University of Delaware. “We all thought it would be great at first, but soon my friend was getting annoyed that every time I came over it wasn’t for her anymore. Eventually it caused too much drama, and I ended things with him.”

There are so many dateable guys out there, so when you’re searching for your potential beau, keep this list in mind to eliminate the drama. Enjoy your flings, collegiettes!

13 Signs You Work in Retail

Rude customers, long shifts and repetitive playlists are just some of the struggles clothing-store employees have to deal with on the daily. Here are 13 telltale signs you work in retail!

1. The words "Black Friday" bring you a feeling of dread.

2. Your entire wardrobe consists of clothing you bought at work.

3. The phrases, "Hi, welcome to (store name here),""How can I help you?" and "Have a great day!" are forever imprinted into your brain.

4. You're used to never having a set schedule or being able to make plans.

5. You know that employee discounts are a double-edged sword.

6. You're on a first-name basis with the people who work in the food court.

7. Shoppers who come into the store right before closing are the bane of your existence.

8. Your folding skills are practically resume-worthy.

9. The holidays mean only two things: copious amounts of coffee and crying.

10. Working a double shift, coming in to work at 6 a.m. or doing rollout at midnight are all totally normal occurrences.

11. You've perfected the art of being outwardly bubbly when you actually want to murder someone.

12. Hearing the same playlist over and over again has made you question your sanity.

13. Your mindset 99.9 percent of the time you're working is a little like this:

Understanding Consent Should Be a Cup of Tea

0
0

With the ever rising rate of college campus sexual assault, the topic of what is considered consent and what is not considered consent has taken over the media. Although it should be a common sense decision in whether or not to proceed with sexual interaction with someone (“yes” means “yes” and “no” means “no”), a new video campaign created by Blue Seat Studios and Rockstar Dinosaur Pirate Princess gives us a visual representation of what consent actually means, using stick figures and tea. While the video can be seen as entertaining, it also efficiently illustrates and clears up any confusion on consent.

tea consent from Blue Seat Studios on Vimeo.

The video ends with a short but meaningful statement: "Whether it’s tea or sex, consent is everything.”

According to The Huffington Post, 1 in 5 college women will experience sexual assault. While those numbers are frightening, the recent wave of publicity showing how colleges are starting to handle these sexual assault cases provides a slight comfort. And now that lawmakers are taking a closer look at how colleges are responding to allegations of sexual assault, we are hopeful that the conversation on consent will never die down.

15 Quotes to Put On Your Graduation Cap

0
0

Graduation is a time filled with both excitement and nervousness. Maybe you’ve had a post-college job lined up for a while, or maybe you still have no idea what it is you want to do with your life. (Side note: Not having a job lined up for you when coming out of college isn’t the worst thing in the world!) Either way, now is the time to celebrate your past four years in college—and what better way to do that than tell everybody how you really feel? Check out these 15 quotes below—and make a statement with them on your graduation cap!

1. “Dream the impossible. Seek the unknown. Achieve greatness.”

Calling all free-spirited collegiettes! This quote captures your unconventional approach to life, and proves that the path to success can be as unique as you are!

2. “Just did it.”

If you spent your college years killing it on the soccer field, this one’s for you—not only did you conquer all your competition, you also won at college!

3. “About time.”

You might already feel nostalgic for your college days, but that doesn’t mean you aren’t excited to get on with the rest of your life. This quote show everyone that you are ready to kick some major butt in the real world

4. “Adventure is out there.”

Are you an adventure-seeker about to embark on an awesome trip abroad after graduation? If you’re more interested in exploring the world than you are settling down in a cubicle for a standard 9-to-5, this quote’s for you.

5. “Thanks Mom and Dad, and coffee.”

Your parents may have kept you sane (or at least tried to!) during the past four years… but it was coffee that kept you awake long enough to write all those papers.

6. “Game of loans.”

Maybe, just maybe, if we can get HBO to pick up this new take on Game of Thrones, we’ll be able to pay off those student loans…

7. “Never grow up.”

…because who wants to be a real adult, anyway?

8. Classic name

Show off your personality and make sure nobody forgets who you are by decorating your cap with your name, plus any colors and accessories that illustrate exactly who you are!

9. “She doesn’t even go here anymore.”

You’ve spent your entire college career quoting Mean Girls. Why not finish it off the same way with an iconic quote

10. “The best is yet to come.”

While we have no doubt that college makes up some of the best years of our lives, and even though the prospect of the real world kind of scares us (what’s a life without cereal for dinner and leggings all day every day?!), we totally know that our future is what we make it—and we plan on making it good.

11. “Mischief managed.”

The amount of trouble you and your friends got into gave you the best memories, and it’s hard for you to think how you passed school. But, the point is, you did!

12. Sorority letters

It’s practically your duty to rep your houses one last time, and graduation is the perfect place to do it. Tip: finish it off with a bold Lilly print!

13. “I know I wined a lot but I did it.”

Not to be confused with “whine” (though we’re sure we ALL did plenty of that). Wine becomes a girl’s best friend in college, so why not bring it along to graduation?

14. “Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.”

Graduating college opens the door to an exciting future, and if you’re feeling inspirational, go with a quote that’ll have you working to achieve even your biggest dreams.

15. “Hire me.”

So, you haven’t landed your dream job yet… which means every public appearance is essentially an opportunity to network, right? Might as well let your peers, their parents, school administrators, and everybody else who shows up to your graduation that you are totally available for hire!

No matter what cap you choose, be proud of all you have done to get to this day! Reflect on the amount of work you’ve had to endure to get there and be ready to immerse yourself into the real world… maybe with a funny quote to get you started.

When we’ve been living in our favorite leather jackets all winter and spring, parting with them for summer is a HUGE bummer. Solution: swap it out for a warm weather-appropriate leather jacket, which looks great over a swingy black cami dress. A fringed bag adds just the right amount of boho-chic.

3. Add in texture

7 Surprising Things That Turn Employers Off

0
0

When applying for jobs, we all know the obvious moves you should absolutely avoid. Whether it’s typos in your resume, showing up late for an interview or dressing inappropriately, there are things a professional collegiette just never does. However, there are a lot of things you may not have given a second thought to that could be deterring employers. Her Campus spoke with the experts to find out employers’ biggest pet peeves that could be hurting your chances of landing the job.

1. Talking about money before you get the job

Of course, money is important. If a position doesn’t pay enough, you may not be able to take it. However, Lesley Mitler, president of the career coaching service Priority Candidates, Inc., says if you haven’t gotten the job yet, don’t talk about money! Mitler says that saying things like, “I wouldn’t take this job for X amount” or even bringing up money at all in a first interview is a real turnoff for employers.

Not only is it presumptuous to bring money up so early, but it also tells the employer that money is your priority, not doing a good job. Express your interest in the job and the company, and wait until you’ve landed the position to discuss the salary!

2. Being unprofessional on social media

Social media is an easy way for employers to learn about you, whether you want them to or not. While you probably know to hide those photos from last night’s party from the public, you might not think about the subtler things you’re doing online that employers find unattractive.

According to Neal Schaffer, author of Maximize Your Social, “You are what you tweet.” While you might think you’re fine as long as there’s nothing blatantly bad on your social media profiles, you should rethink the messages you’re sending out to the world. “Your branding, the way employers perceive you, will be based on what they can find [out] about you in your social media profile,” Schaffer says.

For example, Schaffer says, “You may be really upset that you had to deal with a customer service issue with a major brand, but if you complain a lot about that issue, some employers may see that as a sign of immaturity [and] impatience.”

You may want to express your frustration and tell your friends to avoid a brand that’s given you trouble, but it’s best to tell them in person instead of whining online. Before posting anything publicly, ask yourself, “What will an employer think when they see this?” If you’re about to tweet about how little motivation you have to get your homework done, look at it from an employer’s perspective. Why should they hire someone who lacks drive? Even a seemingly harmless tweet can send a bad message.

Schaffer says that to catch an employer’s attention, “[Share] content that is compelling and very relevant to your industry, so that when a potential hiring manager sees you, they see that you already ‘get it.’” If you’re passionate about fashion, share news about your favorite designers or your thoughts on a recently released collection.

Engage with people and brands that inspire you. If you tweet an article on your favorite blog, mention the blogger in your tweet. Emily Miethner, founder of FindSpark, a community for young, creative professionals, says to “follow companies in the industries you’re interested in long before you apply.” By getting started early, you can build up your knowledge of these brands and the industry as a whole, which will prepare you for any future interviews and applications.

The moral of the story? Think before you tweet, collegiettes! Putting some extra effort into your online presence will really help you stand out. Always approach your public profiles from an employer’s point of view and share content that would make you want to hire you!

3. Taking notes

You may think taking notes is a good thing to do during an interview; in a way, it shows you’re organized and you care about details. However, Mitler says the impression it gives off is just the opposite.

“I think that’s really off-putting, first of all because you’re trying to form a relationship with the interviewer, yet, you’re acting like you’re in a classroom,” she says.

Mitler says to think of an interview like a date. You wouldn’t take notes on a date, would you? “You’re supposed to be able to listen and remember things, and if you still have questions about things that were discussed or things that were said, you can always ask those questions later on,” she says.

So next time you go to an interview, leave your notebook behind. Pay close attention, try to take mental notes and form a bond with your interviewer. That will do more to help you get the job than note-taking ever could!

4. Disguising a strength as a weakness

Answering the “What’s your biggest weakness?” question can be difficult. You always feel like you have to recover from your weakness to save your image and show the employer you’re worthy of the job, but Mitler says trying to spin a weakness into a strength is one of her biggest pet peeves. “I want to hear about a weakness, a true weakness,” she says.

If you typically answer this question with something like, “I’m a perfectionist,” it’s time to reconsider. We all know perfectionism isn’t really a weakness—what do you genuinely struggle with?

If employers ask about your strengths, they want to hear about your strengths. If they ask about your weaknesses, they want to hear about your weaknesses! Show them that you can acknowledge your flaws.

Rather than trying to humblebrag by giving a weakness that’s obviously a strength, tell the interviewer about your real weakness, and then tell him or her how you’re improving upon it. If you struggle with organization, tell your interviewer how you’re training yourself to set reminders and enter events into your phone. Even if your weakness is that you have difficulty admitting to your faults, tell potential employers what steps you’re taking to try to fix that!

Admitting that you aren’t perfect can actually make you a more appealing candidate in the eyes of a potential employer; it shows that you know when to seek help and take actions to fix your own mistakes. Employers don’t want to hire someone who is going to try to cover their own tracks and glaze over issues.

5. Always having all the answers

Similarly, an inability to say “I don’t know” when you really don’t know the answer to a question can be unappealing to employers. “If you’re somebody who can’t say ‘I don’t know,’ you’re probably somebody who’s going to work there and try to cover up anything you don’t know by pretending that you do,” Mitler says.

Employers want to know that if you truly don’t know how to do something or if you need help with something, you’re going to ask for help. They want you to be independent and self-sufficient, but not to the point of coasting along without knowing what you’re doing and potentially harming the company as a result. “Sometimes employers will actually ask questions that they don’t think you know the answer to just to see if you can say, ‘I don’t know,’” Mitler says.

For example, if an interviewer asks you about software that he knows you have zero experience with, don’t pretend like you know exactly what he’s talking about. You don’t want employers to think you can do something that you have no idea how to do, and they can usually tell when you’re bluffing. Don’t be afraid to say something like, “I’m not familiar with that particular program, but I’m a fast learner and I do have experience with X, Y and Z.” Don’t lie to your interviewer; tell him you don’t know but show him how you can make up for it.

6. Not being on LinkedIn

We cannot stress the importance of LinkedIn enough. According to Schaffer, not having a LinkedIn profile is one of the biggest mistakes college students make when it comes to social networking. “That’s where most employers are, and a LinkedIn profile gives you the ability to say, ‘Hey, this is what I’ve done, these are the people I’m connected to, these are the recommendations I have,’” he says.

Imagine this: You are one of hundreds of applicants for a job. An employer picks up your resume and is interested enough to do a quick Google or LinkedIn search to find out more about you. When she comes up with nothing, she’ll think you aren’t putting in the effort to get yourself out there professionally.

Miethner says LinkedIn is a great resource for students. “If you don’t have a LinkedIn profile, you’re missing out on huge opportunities to tell your story and share your experiences,” she says.

It’s the easiest way for an employer to find additional information about you. Be sure to include links to any special projects you’ve done at work or at school, articles you’ve written, videos you’ve made or anything else relevant to your field. And definitely don’t be afraid to ask your managers for recommendations so potential employers can see how awesome you are!

Reading recommendations on LinkedIn is so much easier for employers than calling your old boss. If they can’t access that information easily, they’re probably going to move on to the next resume rather than digging around to find out more about you. Setting up your LinkedIn profile shows employers that you’re in the know and you really care about your career.

Miethner says that if you’re going to use LinkedIn, you have to be smart about it. She says to “always send a custom LinkedIn invite message.” This shows employers and connections that you’re putting some thought into it and not just mindlessly adding everyone you meet. Plus, if you’re connecting with someone you don’t know very well, you can remind him or her whom you are. But Miethner also warns against adding connections through the app on your phone—it doesn’t let you customize the message!

If you want to go a step further, think about starting your own website. Platforms like WordPress offer reasonably priced domain names and are pretty straightforward to use. You can post your resume and a portfolio or other information that employers might want. Plus, it shows that you take initiative and you’re tech-savvy.

7. Not doing your research

You should always prepare for an interview by doing research on the company beforehand. You should never ask a question in an interview if the answer is easily accessible online! But the real question here is, are you researching the person who might be employing you?

You might think that by asking an interviewer how she got to her position, what she studied in school or anything else about her background shows interest. But Mitler says this could work against you in an interview. “You don’t ask them about their background if they’re on LinkedIn,” she says.

These days, pretty much all this information is available online. Plus, employers are typically notified when you check them out on LinkedIn, so they know you’re doing your homework. Even if they can’t see you’ve viewed them, you can show them you know your stuff by asking about their specific experiences. Instead of asking, “How did you get to where you are now?” try asking something like, “How did working for Company X prepare your for your current position?”

So, collegiettes, before you send out any more applications or go to interviews, take a moment to reevaluate your job-search strategy. Filter your social media, fill out your LinkedIn profile and prepare answers and questions for interviews. We’re sure you’ll blow those employers away!

7 Signs Your Boyfriend Likes His Female Friend

0
0

In one of our fave rom-comsWhen Harry Met Sally…, Harry explicitly states, “Men and women can’t be friends because the sex part always gets in the way.” But is this true? Haven’t we evolved since 1989?

He’s the boyfriend. You’re the girlfriend. But then there’s his girl (space!) friend. She’s super cool, almost a little too cool. You can see how they connect, how they go “way back”… but he picked you. So, what do you have to worry about? Nothing… right?

Here are some ways to tell if your guy’s female friend might actually be a little something more to him.

Sign #1: He’s Overly Protective of His Phone

Honesty is the best policy; that hasn’t really changed since our pre-K days. In a stable, healthy relationship, everything should be on the table. While there should be a certain level of trust present in every relationship, a super secretive boyfriend could be hiding something.

Sharing a few texts here and there and talking about random homework assignments or inside jokes is to be expected between friends. But when friendly crosses the line into flirty, there may be a problem. Winky faces, playful emojis and late-night conversations could reveal his true feelings for his “friend.”

A man’s relationship with his phone says a lot about him, says Mike Lindstrom, co-author of Men: Ten Secrets Every Woman Should Know from Two Guys That Do. “If his cellphone is on his person at all times, or… if he’s just overly close with it, that should be a big red flag,” he says.

Sign #2: He Puts Extra Effort Into his Appearance Before Hanging out With Her

“That’s strange. He styled his hair a little differently tonight. Is that mousse…?” That could be a warning sign. The only girl your man should be trying to impress is you.

Of course, he, like many others, may just be trying to look decent before stepping out into the outside world. But Lindstrom has a different take on the situation. “If they are truly just friends, he wouldn’t mind going to see her unshaven with his hat on backwards,” he says. “If he’s going out of his way, there’s something going on.”

That extra spritz of cologne, unnecessary primping in the mirror and too much time spent picking out an outfit could tell you that he thinks of his friend as more than a friend and seriously values what she thinks of his appearance.

Sign #3: He Talks to Her or Hangs Out With Her More Than You

Guys appreciate it when you can honor his bro time and just let him hang out with his friends for a change. And when those friends happen to include girls, it can earn you major cool points in your boyfriend’s mind. Ryan, a sophomore at the University of Missouri––Kansas City, agrees. “My ex-girlfriend didn’t get jealous when I hung out with other girls, and that was a bigger deal than you’d think,” he says. But if your boyfriend starts caring more about hanging out with his girl friend instead of you, that could spell trouble.

Tweeting at each other, liking each other’s Instagram posts (Every single one? Really?), and constantly texting each other is a bit much. You’re an understanding collegiette. You get that they’re good friends, so naturally they have a lot to talk about. But when he starts doing more of these things with her than with you, you could have a problem on your hands.

Charlie, a junior at Loyola University Chicago, says he once fell for one of his girl friends while he was dating someone else. “If a guy is talking to another girl more than his girlfriend, there’s got to be something there,” he says. “No guy should treat his girlfriend like that if he really cares about her… There’s definitely a line.”

Sign #4: He Invites Her Over to Hang out When He Knows You Won’t be There

If he’s hanging out with his gal pal when you’re not around or when he knows that you’re busy, that could raise some red flags. He knows that you always study on Wednesday afternoons at the library, so he makes it a point to invite his lady friend over during that time. He says he does this so that she doesn’t bother you or intrude when you’re over at his apartment with him.

So, why should you be concerned? Lindstrom says this is a huge red flag. “Inviting his friend over when he knows you won’t be there? Why doesn’t he want you there?” he says.

While he simply could be a very thoughtful guy, if he’s planning his hangouts with her around your schedule, maybe he’s doing that to purposefully have some alone time with her—and without you.

Sign #5: He Frequently Brings up Her Name in Conversation

“That reminds me of the time when she and I went to this music festival and we camped out in a tent. It was a crazy couple of days,” could just be another one of his entertaining experiences he has shared with his good girl friend. And you like hearing about his life before you came along. You like hearing all his charming anecdotes, which almost always make you laugh. But when one too many of those anecdotes involve the same two characters, you could start to see a pattern.

“He’s doing that [talking about her constantly] to test the waters,” Lindstrom, says. “If there’s interest or attraction, he’s going to bring it up more often because he wants his girlfriend to see her as a friend.” By doing so, Lindstrom says this will give the guy more freedom to argue: “She’s my friend; I talk about her all the time. If anything was going on, why would I talk about her?”

Maybe he’s just talking about her so much because they do have so many great memories together. But does he always have to tell you the stories in which she plays a main role? And does her name seem to come up in random conversations? If so, she could be on his mind… and maybe even in his heart.

Sign #6: He Confides in Her About Your Relationship

She’s a good friend, listening to him talk about his daily hardships. But when it comes to venting about the ups and downs of your relationship, that could be going a little too far.

Lindstrom chalks this situation up to two different kinds of cheating: emotional and physical. “Even if she [the female friend] is really just a friend—and they’ve never hooked up—but he’s giving a lot of very personal information, that could be close to emotional cheating,” he says. While it depends on each person’s self-described cheating barriers, Lindstrom says giving another girl all the personal details of your relationship could be crossing a line.

Maybe he just needed someone to talk to before you were available, or he wanted to clearly frame his ideas on a subject before confronting you about something. Naturally he would turn to his good friend, a fellow female, for advice. But when this becomes a regular occurrence and she knows more about your relationship than you do, it might be time to draw some boundaries.

Sign #7: He Can’t Say No to Her

She needs his help on an English assignment for class when he already promised to help you with your physics homework. He elects to help her because she’s already struggling in that class. She needs to go to the grocery store, but she doesn’t have a car. Your boyfriend offers to drive her even though he was planning on seeing his professor during his office hours today. When he can’t seem to find the word “no” for her, your boyfriend may be struggling to commit to you. When she starts to become a first-tier priority for him, it may be time to have a serious conversation with him.

Girl friends of boyfriends walk a fine line between maintaining their friendship with their guy friend while also respecting the boundaries of his relationship. If you notice your guy becoming a bit distanced from you and a bit closer to his friend, you might want to step in. If it appears as if Harry from When Harry Met Sally… was right about guys not being able to have girl friends, you should definitely (calmly) confront your boyfriend. After all, if you don’t make the top tier of his priorities, why should he make yours?

The whole Pretty Little Liars squad seems to be super close and supportive of each other, but no one is closer than Ashley Benson and Shay Mitchell are; they even love to refer to themselves as #ButtahBenzo. With a selfie game as strong as theirs, we guess they do need their own hashtag.

3. Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale

6 Beauty Products That Are Made of Really Bizarre Ingredients

0

Romans in 100 AD used sheep fat and blood on their fingernails for polish. And in the 1300s, English woman wore egg whites over their faces to create the appearance of a paler complexion. Since then, cosmetics have come a long way and are a lot less "icky" than they were back then. However, there are several products that are made of the really bizarre ingredients—below.

1. Cochineal beetles

When these bugs are full of cactus juice they are boiled, dried out, and crushed into "carmine." It's used in some red lipsticks and blushes to create gorgeous shades.

Becca in Beach Tint - $25

2. Snail mucus

It sounds absolutely disgusting, but snail mucus contains a group of proteins rich in amino acids that hold water to create softer skin. It's used in lots of anti-aging creams and is completely safe.

Mizon All-In-One Snail Repair Cream - $38

3. Bird poop

As weird as it sounds, the makeup of bird poop moisturizes skin and creates a gorgeous glow. Since birds only have one orfice for both urine and feces, the combination creates an amazing (and yes, slightly gross) ingredients for face products.

The Geisha Facial at New York's Shizuka Spa - $180

4. Placenta

Extracts from human and animal placenta are used in certain products to strengthen the skin and hair. It's loaded with proteins, but also hormones, which means it can increase breast cancer so caution must be used!

Hask Placenta No Rinse Hair Repair Treatment - $3.96

5. Bee venom

When the product is applied, blood rushes to the area, stimulating production of collagen and elastin. It contains enzymes and peptides used to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, but be prepared to pay big bucks!

Rodial Bee Venom Serum - $200

6. Wool grease

Don't worry... no animals are harmed in the extraction of wool grease! Also known as lanolin, wool grease has sebum (just like human skin) that moisturizes and has amazing healing properties.

Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask - $26

Would you try any of these strange products, collegiettes?

11 Poses Girls Do in Pictures

1. The Sorority Squat

Originally created as classy way to duck so photographers could see people in the back row, the sorority squat lost its practicality when the entire group decided to get a leg workout.

2. The “Candid” Kodak Moment

See someone taking sneaky candids? Better force some laughter so you don't look bored. "You just ate lunch? Wow, that is SO funny!"

3. The Cheek Smooch

The ultimate bestie PDA, the cheek smooch says you're super flirty (and have probably full-on made out with some of your girlfriends). #girlsnight #wine #badcombo

4. The Skinny Arm

Who needs to diet when you can slim down your waist and one arm with this easy move? Use with caution, though: doubling the skinny arm may result in looking unintentionally sassy.

5. The Death Grip Hug

Quick! Your friends are falling off a mountain and only you and this photo opp can save them! We also heard that the harder you hug, the stronger the bonds of your friendships will become (until you crush their lungs and they can't breathe).

Sometimes you just don't know what to do with your hands, so why not throw up some deuces or make your GDI friends think you've pledged your allegiance to organized crime?

7. The "I Still Need to Look Good" Goofy Face

This is the go-to pose for the girl who wants to prove she's fun, but she's completely against outdoor sports, breaking a sweat and anything else that could ruin her makeup. 8. The Leg Pop

Do you need to go to the bathroom, or is one of your legs shyer than the other?

10. The "Get Away From Me" Lean
