23 Signs You're a Kid at Heart

$

0

Of all the things we don’t want to do today, “grow up” is number one.  Being an adult is probably the worst thing ever, especially when it involves going to work, waking up early, paying bills and having a hard time staying awake without coffee.  No, thanks - we'd rather stay at home and watch cartoons for a few (dozen) hours.  Luckily, growing up doesn’t have to mean acting like a kid is impossible.  We’re definitely still kids at heart.

1. You find a way to sneak chocolate into your diet whenever possible.

2. Shows on Nickelodeon and Disney Channel are still really entertaining, in your opinion.

3. The most-played songs on your iPod will forever and always be those by Britney Spears and Avril Lavigne.

4.  Your bad days are instantly made better by the sight of a puppy. Multiple puppies send you into fluffy, problem-free heaven.

5. You’re still not quite sure how to put on makeup properly.

6. This counts as a balanced dinner, right?

7.  You still refer to the future with the phrase, “when I grow up,” even if you’re graduating college this year.

8. Drinking coffee is still kinda nasty, and you only do it in dire situations.

9. Sometimes (always) you eat all the marshmallows out of the Lucky Charms box.

10. Sleepovers with the girls always beat going out to bars or clubs.

11. The way you decide whether a guy likes you or not is to pluck petals off of a flower.

12. You still sleep with your blanket from elementary school (no shame!).

13. You’ve made it absolutely clear to your parents that you still expect presents from Santa on Christmas morning.

14. At McDonald’s, you still order a Happy Meal so you can get a toy.

15. The thought of wearing a thong is still weird to you. Permanent wedgie? No thanks!

16. The book you’ve read most recently is The Hunger Games. And it was awesome.

17. You would major in Arts and Crafts if that were an option.

18. You freaking love birthday parties.

19. And cotton candy.

20. Your best friends and closest allies are, well, animated.

21. Lunchables aren’t that gross… in fact, you kind of like them.

22. Jokes about bodily functions still make you laugh. Like, really hard.

23. Your grocery cart is usually full of Gushers, Fruit by the Foot and Swedish Fish.

We're all about the Peter Pan "never-grow-up" lifestyle. Adulthood, take your time showing up. We're pretty content with the way things are right now.

The 13 Struggles of Swimsuit Shopping

Now that it’s finally swimsuit season, finding the perfect suit is at the top of our to-do list. Unfortunately, shopping for bathing suits just may be the most terrible thing that has ever happened to us, ever. You may think we’re being dramatic, but we swear we’re not. The struggles of shopping for a swimsuit are real… too real.

1. Finding a suit that looks awesome on the rack… and super awkward on your body type.

2. All that’s left are XXS suits… is anyone actually that size?

3. Thinking the bikini you love is $30, and then realizing that that’s only the cost of the top.

4. Any time you order a suit online, it will be a) backordered or b) a completely different color than what it looked like on the Internet.

5. You will inevitably find a super-cute monokini. You will also somehow get so tangled in it in the dressing room that you will have to call the girl working at the store to come help you out.

6. Wondering, “Why is everything neon?”

7. Trying to edge, but not cross, the line between sexy and Playboy.

8. Realizing with annoyance that your boobs will NEVER fit into a triangle bikini.

9. Don’t even get us started on unflattering dressing-room lighting.

10. Trying to come to terms with the fact that you really, really need to hit the gym.

11. Being generally confused about how a crocheted bikini really covers anything that should definitely be covered up.

12. Finally you find an acceptable option. You’re super stoked until you notice a sizable rip in the bikini seam. Great. Awesome quality, swimsuit makers of the world.

13. Exhaustion — after hours of trying on bathing suits, the final struggle is realizing just how tiring shopping is.

You’ll find a keeper, trust us! Just keep trying ‘em on.

13 Moments That Make You Feel Like an Adult

$

Although we may still be kids at heart, the real world is right around the corner (cue panic attack). Here are 13 moments that make us feel like we're becoming responsible, well-adjusted members of society.

1. Buying toilet paper.

2. Paying rent with your own paycheck.

3. Cooking dinner for yourself without the use of a microwave.

4. Choosing to stay in rather than go out on a weekend night.

5. Hosting a dinner party.

6. Buying your first legal drink.

7. Getting invited to the wedding of someone you're graduating with.

8. Not understanding the lyrics in popular rap songs.

9. Moving in with your significant other.

10. Making your own doctors' appointments.

11. Going to bed early.

12. Seeing that you have more than $10 in your bank account and not spending that money on alcohol.

13. Realizing that popular celebrities are younger than you.

You Can Score 1-Cent Buys at Nordstrom Rack!

$
0
0

After finals season, we’ll all be down to indulge in some much needed retail therapy. Why not head to Nordstorm Rack to see if you can swipe one of their penny deals? You read right—new clothes for $0.01. It's almost too good to be true.

Nordstorm Rack’s elusive one-cent deals are the epitome of a bargain. A few times a week, the staff at Nordstorm rack staff scours all the store’s merchandise, scanning the price tag on every item, particularly ones that have spent some time on clearance. If the price shows up as one cent, it’s a cue to take it off the rack and send it back to the main warehouse. Staff can’t take advantage, but if a customer is lucky enough to find one of these pieces before the staff gets it off the sales floor, they get the best deal anybody has ever come across.

Technically, these crazy steals aren't supposed to be on the floor, and staff try their best to make sure it doesn’t happen. But every so often, some items slip through and if they do, Nordstorm Rack sticks to the ring-up price.

So how can you score one of these crazy deals? There isn’t a guaranteed method, but there are some tips and tricks you can follow to up your chances.

  • Head for the sales rack and comb through for things that have been marked down a few times, a sign that it’s been on clearance for a while and therefore will soon be taken off the rack.
  • See if you can find a store in an area where there are similar competing stores nearby, or where their clothes don’t normally sell as well, forcing associates to slash the price a few times.
  • Find a less populated store; in busy stores, people are buying up product at a higher rate, meaning there's less of a chance that any given item sits for an extended period of time.
  • However, busy stores also have their advantages. They’re more likely to be understaffed and employees don’t always have the chance to be sifting through the merchandise as much as they usually would, giving you a better chance of getting there before they do.

Even if you don’t score a penny deal, it’s well worth the chance. And if you do, then revel in the post-shopping bliss that’s cheaper than a pack of gum.

Study by Female Scientists is Rejected for Not Having a Male Author

$

0

In a frustrating addition to the perpetual gender equality struggle, a peer reviewer at the scientific journal PLOS ONE recently rejected a study submitted by two geneticists, Fiona Ingleby and Megan Head, suggesting they add a male author to the study. Funny enough, their research reported on gender bias in academia, and how women with PhDs in biology published work less frequently than men with the same degree.

After receiving the feedback on her study, Ingleby took to Twitter to air her frustration.

#AddMaleAuthorGate went viral after Ingleby’s understandable rant hit the Internet. Twitter users became enraged at the news, and many made fun of the hypocrisy of the reviewer’s critiques, or lack thereof. All Ingleby and Head were given to work with were a few empty comments about their work, and no beneficial criticism. Given this lackluster reply, Ingleby and Head’s case was quick to become one that focused on gender discrimination.

Authorities at PLOS ONE have released a formal apology and announced that they have removed the reviewer from their staff. The review has been formally removed from the system and the manuscript has been sent to a new reviewer to evaluate it. Damian Patterson, PLOS ONE’s Editorial Director, wrote, “We are reviewing our processes to ensure that future authors are given a fair and unprejudiced review. As part of this, we are working on new features to make the review process more open and transparent, since evidence suggests that review is more constructive and civil when the reviewers’ identities are known to the authors. This work has been ongoing for some months at PLOS ONE, and we will be announcing more details on these offerings soon."

This issue has caused an uproar in the scientific community (and beyond), and serves as a reminder that female scientists continue to face gender-related obstacles in their environment. Hopefully, Ingleby and Head will receive a fair and unbiased second review that will allow them to either publish their findings or edit their study using constructive criticism.

7 Quick Fixes You Can Make to Revamp Your Resume

$
0
0

You wouldn’t go out with scuffs all over your favorite pair of pumps, would you? Probably not—you’d polish them to make them look as awesome as possible. The same should go with your resume!

We know that with your super-busy collegiette schedule, you have great experiences listed, and now you just have to make the finishing touches—the polish. But what are the quick fixes you can make in order for your resume to go above and beyond?

We talked to Emily Miethner, the founder and CEO of FindSpark, a website that gives young professionals the tools to get a great job or internship, to get the lowdown on a few ways to polish your resume and make it the best it can be.

1. Rewrite the sections that you wrote quickly

With great things come a lot of time and effort—we’ve all heard that one before! When it comes to your resume, you need to take your time on it to make sure it comes out perfect.

“To make the biggest difference, you definitely need to put time in,” Miethner says.

As much as you may like to be, you’re not Hermione—you can’t simply wave your wand and create a perfectly written and formatted resume. If there are parts that you did write a little too quickly, make sure you go back and touch them up. Start each bullet point off with an action verb, like “led,” “coordinated” and “developed.” Be sure the skills you choose to highlight from a certain experience are truly the ones you want to emphasize, and make sure they show all that you do!

2. Get rid of any irrelevant experience

We’ve all heard before that undergraduate resumes should be limited to only one page, so it’s really important that your one page shows your best possible self to potential employers.

“You want to make it as clear as possible that you’re relevant for the job as quickly as possible,” Miethner says. That means getting rid of work experience that might not necessarily show why you’re a perfect fit for the company.

So your two summers waiting tables at the local diner? Not super necessary on the resume you’re submitting to that investment banking firm. While Miethner says that while jobs like these definitely had a purpose, they don’t show immediately why you can contribute to a professional job or internship.

Instead, Miethner suggests cutting out your summer job so you have more room to expand upon your experiences with the accounting club at your school. Although accounting club isn’t necessarily work experience, it shows your potential employer more immediately that you have the skills to contribute and succeed at the job for which you’re applying. When it comes to putting your work experience on paper, cut out the waitressing and retail jobs—unless they directly relate to the full-time job or internship you’re looking for!

Miether also says you should list your most relevant experiences first. So, when applying to the investment banking firm, you should probably list your experiences with accounting club first and your experiences as the treasurer of your dance team second. Both clubs have given you skills that you can use in investment banking, but accounting club definitely highlights those skills more and should always be listed first.

3. Update to a great font and layout

As much as we love flowery graphics and pretty borders, we don’t really love them on our resumes. Instead, Miethner suggests keeping your layout simple. Don’t go over-the-top with incorporating color or special designs, Miethner says. Instead, make sure that it’s simple and easy to read.

Miethner says choosing between serif and sans serif fonts is important. Sans serif fonts (think of fonts like Arial, Calibri and Helvetica) don’t have those little horizontal lines at the ends of the letters. Serif fonts (think of fonts like Times New Roman and Cambria) do. This font you’re reading now? It’s a serif font. The default font on your Twitter feed? A sans serif font.

Miethner is a fan of the sans serif font for resumes (so Arial, Calibri or Helvetica) because they lend themselves to titles and bolder type. “I think it’s much easier to read a sans serif font than a serif font,” she says. “Most resumes nowadays are read on the screen, and it’s scientifically easier on the eye to read sans serif on a screen.”

Like everything else, color should also be simple. A pop of color in your header can go a long way in making your resume stick out, but make sure you don’t go too crazy—only use one color, and make sure it’s featured in simple accents.

As far as formatting goes, Miethner says, bearing in mind simplicity, you should keep it consistent.

“Whatever format you do choose, you have to stick with it through your entire resume,” Miethner says. “Otherwise, it’s going to get confusing.”

Read over your resume to make sure all formatting choices are made consistently throughout the entire resume: Make sure you keep your titles the same font size, and make the decision if you’re going to use periods at the ends of bullet points or not. Keep track of the use of commas, dashes and semicolons as well. An inconsistent format is not only confusing for the reader, but shows that you were careless—it’s going to make the hiring manager wonder what else you might get careless about!

4. Check your bullet points for accurate information

Nobody likes having to sort through clutter, and simplicity isn’t limited to your font and layout choices—you should keep it simple in your experience descriptions, too! Miethner says you should avoid repeating duties you did for different organizations.

“I feel like one mistake people make is if they have similar roles, they can get repetitive bullets,” Miethner says. “Make sure that every bullet shows a different skill or accomplishment.”

Miethner suggests highlighting the different and varying duties you had with different jobs and organizations not only as a way to give yourself more room on your resume, but to keep from wasting the time of the individual reading your resume.

This will also help hiring managers see the really important skills on your resume. Instead of cluttering it with repetitive information, the hiring manager’s eye will be directly drawn toward your bullet point about displaying exemplary knowledge of AP Style as an editor for your school paper or your ability to make price negotiations through your campus programming board. There’s no need to distract them from what you can really do with a bunch of fluff!

5. Save it in multiple formats

Have you ever downloaded a worksheet from a professor and the layout on the page was all wrong? That’s because their version of word processor might be different from yours, so the formatting gets all out of whack when opened on a different computer.

You should take that knowledge and apply it to your resume, too. Save it on the default format (.doc, .docx, etc.), but also save it as a PDF. Saving your resume as a PDF is kind of like saving it as a picture, so there’s no way your formatting can get messed up. When sending documents to a hiring manager, be sure to send him or her both formats and let him or her know that you’ve done that for his or her convenience.

6. Spell out all acronyms

When looking over your resume draft, make sure you hunt down all of those acronyms and spell them out! This will give the hiring manager a better idea of what you’re talking about on your resume and will increase your chances of getting recognized for your accomplishments.

So, if you were a member of your student government association, don’t just list SGA President on your resume. Instead, you should spell out the entire acronym—Student Government Association. The same thing goes with different conferences and competitions you participated in. If you were on your college’s cheerleading team and went to the National Cheerleaders Association Collegiate Championship, don’t just say, “NCA National Champion” on your resume; instead, spell the whole title out.

7. Change the file name

If you’re anything like us, your resume originally had a file name that was really ambiguous, like “resume,” or something like that. Instead, change it to “[First name] [Last name] resume.”

This not only looks way more professional, but makes your resume a lot more identifiable and easy to find for hiring managers, especially when they’re handling a whole swarm of candidate resumes. Nothing would stink more than getting overlooked for a job because the hiring manager couldn’t locate your resume.

It’s always a great feeling when you go out for the night and everyone compliments your super-cute, shiny pumps. You’re looking flawless, and everyone knows it. You’re going to get that great feeling when you polish your resume, too! Good luck, collegiettes!

Make Your Own Chipotle Guacamole for Cinco de Mayo

Ever have the urge to make guacamole but just can’t seem to find a recipe that will measure up to Chipotle’s? Well, if you’ve been in this situation, then you’re in luck because Chipotle has just released their guacamole recipe to the public, just in time for Cinco de Mayo!

The recipe itself is really pretty simple. There are no surprise ingredients. The recipe is as natural as Chipotle promises its recipes are.

So collegiettes, will you be trying out this recipe tonight at your Cinco de Mayo fiesta? It’s not too difficult and it could take those tortilla chips from drab to fab! Plus, you can save a ton of money by making your own guac instead of paying those extra couple of dollars for it every time (and yes, we know it's extra). We even did the math: if you go to Chipotle twice a week (pretty typical of a college student), then you’d be saving $187.20 a year!

Enjoy this Cinco de Mayo, made sweeter (or more savory!) by the gift of homemade guacamole.

YOU’LL NEED:

2 ripe Hass avocados
2 tsp lime juice
2 tbsp cilantro (chopped)
1/4 cup red onion (finely chopped)
1/2 jalapeño, including seeds (finely chopped)
1/4 tsp kosher salt

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Choose the right avocado. It should feel squishy yet firm (like the palm of your hand), and be a nice dark green color on the inside.
2. Cut the avocado in half and the remove the pit (carefully!)
3. Scoop the avocados and place in a medium bowl.
4. Toss and coat with lime juice.
5. Add the salt and using a fork or potato masher, mash until a smooth consistency is achieved.
6. Fold in the remaining ingredients and mix well.
7. Taste the guacamole (over and over!) and adjust seasoning if necessary.

Life is complete.

4 Signs You Should Break up After Graduation

You’ve been with your college SO for a while now, possibly since you eyed each other on move-in day. It’s been a good run, but as graduation sneaks up on you (depressing, we know), you may start wondering if your relationship will last after graduation. We talked to Rhonda Ricardo, author of Cherries Over Quicksand, and Scot McKay, dating coach and founder of dating company X & Y Communications, to point out the signs that you should end your college relationship after graduation.

1. You’re in different places in your lives

If your SO won’t give up on frat parties and drinking until he or she pukes, it may be time to end it. The last thing you want is a significant other who’s stuck in college while you’re trying to set foot in the real world.

“If you’re in different years of college (one graduated and other is still there), that’s going to be a long road,” McKay says. “When people graduate from college they move on and have different mindsets.”

There’s no use in postponing your life for someone who isn’t ready to grow up. If your SO is still looking to live off ramen noodles and blow off responsibilities, there won’t be room for your relationship to grow. Find someone who’s in the same mental place as you.

2. It doesn’t feel right

Relationships can sometimes feel off, and this may be a sign that the two of you aren’t meant to be.

“The only way to truly know that something is off or it’s time to move on is to bring up the conversation with your SO,” Ricardo says. “If you or your SO states that they want to break up and pursue brand new career options before committing to a lifetime romance, then you know.”

McKay says that graduating from college can make a relationship feel different. “College relationships are a very specific social situation; you are on campus together,” he says. “Once you get out of the social scenario and get into the real world, the situation is different. You are the same people, but you’re in a different situation, and that can bring awkwardness to the relationship.”

3. You want different things

If you and your SO have different ideas of what life after college will be like, it may be best to move on. It’s not going to work out if your goals aren’t in line.

McKay says that relationships are built around prioritization. “Let’s say both of you are graduating, and one of you is moving to California and one to London,” he says. “You both aren’t prioritizing your relationship. You should admit to each other that your relationship isn’t as important as you think.”

If you truly mean a lot to each other, you can work out the logistics, but finding out what’s best for yourself is the only way to truly tell if you and your SO are meant to be.

4. You don’t see the relationship lasting long-term

If you can’t see yourself spending the rest of your life with this person, it’s time to end it. After graduation, people start to settle down, so you want to make sure you’re with the right person.

“We should be sure that we do not settle because our family wants us to be married or because we just don’t want to be alone when all of our friends are getting engaged in college,” Ricardo says.

McKay says you must have a vision of a future together if you’re going to be in a relationship after college. “If you’re going to be dating someone after college, you’ve got to be thinking about marrying them, and you have to make sure that’s what you want,” he says. Why put in all the effort if he or she isn’t the one?

Sometimes it simply isn’t meant to be. Life after college is much different than life in college, so your relationships could be different, too. Good luck, collegiettes!

9 Excuses All Girls Use (& What They Really Mean)

$

Classic girl excuses: We’ve all heard them, and we’ve all used them. They can get us out of virtually any situation, whether it’s class, a test, a bad date or plans with our mom. Text? What text? We probably didn’t get it because we were at our aunt’s birthday party and then forgot to respond because we got food poisoning from the cake. Yeah, that’s totally what happened. You believe us, right?

1. “I have so much to do.”

“I’ve just been so busy; I can’t seem to catch up!”

But really…

We have nothing to do at all and we intend to keep it that way. We just figure that if we act like tense lunatics, people will leave us to ourselves and we can binge watch Netflix.

2. “It’s my cousin’s/brother’s/uncle’s/best friend’s/cat’s birthday.”

“And the party is like, so far away, and it’ll be an all-day thing. Maybe even an all-night thing.”

But really…

We committed to plans too quickly, and now we're just thinking of any logical excuse to get out of whatever it is we want to get out of.

3. “What? I totally never got your text!”

“That’s crazy! Are you sure it was the right number? Did it say it was delivered?”

But really…

We got your text, but we didn't feel like responding. Sorry we're not sorry.

4. “I had an awful day.”

“You don’t even understand. It was literally awful.”

But really…

We're just in a flat-out b*tchy mood and we don’t really have an explanation for it, so for justification, we’ll just pretend we had the day from hell.

5. “I think I have food poisoning.”

“Trust me, you don’t want to come near me. It’s probably best if I just lay low until that bad batch of shrimp passes through me.”

But really…

We really don’t want to go out, and food poisoning is the perfect excuse: We can totally pull it off as a quick 12-hour bug and be back in public by tomorrow. Is a night on the couch without human contact too much to ask for?

6. “I have killer cramps.”

“…and bloating, back pains and extreme irritability, so back off.”

But really…

We simply don’t feel like getting out of bed. There's no way anyone will try to argue any excuse related to Aunt Flo, and we will use that to our power until the day we leave this earth. If we don’t want to do something, blame it on the period. It works like a charm.

7. “My nails are wet.”

We don’t want to smudge a fresh manicure, now do we?

But really…

These suckers have been dry for a half hour, but until someone figures that out, we're going to milk this for all that we can. “I’d totally help you move the furniture to vacuum, but I just painted my nails and they’re a little wet still.”

8. “My friend really needs me right now.”

“She’s in a really bad place. I don’t want to miss out, but I can’t leave her alone.”

But really…

She needs someone to split drinks and the two-for-$20 meal deals at Applebee's with. What kind of friend would leave someone hanging in that kind of situation? Plus, it was her idea to use her emotional distress as the excuse, so blame her.

9. Crying.

Stone-cold crying.

But really…

We’re honestly not that upset, but if we run out of excuses, a fake mental breakdown always does the trick.

Smith College Will Now Accept Transgender Women

The largest all-women's college in the country just announced that it will accept transgender women into its student body come fall semester. Massachusetts-based Smith College adopted the new admissions policy just last weekend.

BuzzFeed reported that Smith College board members voted on this new policy last Saturday. The college has experienced several protests fighting for the admittance of transgender women over the course of the past year, particularly after the admissions department was revealed to have denied a transgender woman's application because she was not recognized as a woman legally by her home state.

The school's official admission policy announcement read, "The mission of Smith College is to educate women of promise for lives of distinction. In the years since Smith’s founding, concepts of female identity have evolved."

Smith College is not the first all-women's college to update their admissions policy to include transgender women; Wellesley and Mount Holyoke have recently made the same changes.

President and CEO of GLAAD, Sarah Kate Ellis, said in a recent statement, "No person should be denied an education simply because of who they are. By opening its doors to transgender women, Smith College has joined a growing number of educational institutions that respect and afford equal opportunity to all women."

5 Hairstyling Hacks to Make Your Life Easier

Your alarm goes off and you press snooze no less than six times before you realize that your bio lecture starts in ten minutes. With hardly enough time to get to class, showering is the last thing on your mind. But as soon as you look in the mirror, you realize you’ve got a much bigger obstacle to overcome than making it to your 9 a.m.: dealing with your hair. Have no fear—we talked to real collegiettes and hair stylist Riccardo Maggiore of Flatiron Salon in New York City to gather all the tips and tricks you need to make your hair more manageable.

1. Give in to dry shampoo

Whether you swear by it or you’re too scared to try it, you can’t ignore the buzz that surrounds dry shampoo. “I have thin, straight hair, but I know dry shampoo works for other hair types too,” says Elizabeth Huebsch, a junior at Davidson College. “If I skip a day washing my hair and it gets greasy at all, I use my foundation brush to put a little dry shampoo on my roots and it reduces the appearance of oil.”

Maggiore confirms that this is the way to go. “If you have oily hair, the best thing to do is wash it with dry shampoo as it will absorb extra oil,” he says. “This will create movement to your hair and the resulting look will be soft.”

Carly Griffin, a freshman at the University of Michigan, has had similarly positive experiences with dry shampoo. “I only wash my hair every three days because washing it can actually make it more oily,” she says. “Batiste is my favorite brand of dry shampoo, and I spray it on right when I go to bed so it rubs in as I toss and turn in my sleep.”

“Dry shampoo is a great time saver because it allows you to add texture, which makes it easier to style, freshen up, and restyle your hair without washing it,” says Maggiore. “However, make sure you use it properly by spraying at least six inches away from the roots and waiting at least ten minutes after before styling.”

If you’re unsure of what kind of dry shampoo is best for your hair type, talk to your hair stylist about the difference between powder and aerosol dry shampoos. If you’re still unable to find a brand that suits you, you can check out this recipe for homemade dry shampoo.

2. Try a leave-in conditioner

If leave-in or dry shampoo isn’t enough to tame your mane, there’s also the option to use leave-in conditioner. These conditioners are recommended for women with curly or frizzy hair who want a more sleek, shiny, controlled look.

“I have curly hair that can be super frizzy, so I always apply leave-in conditioner,” Carly says. “Garnier makes a great one that I apply to wet hair just to keep it in lock.”

If you find your hair feeling dry or dehydrated as well, using leave-in conditioner or a conditioner with extra moisturizer can help to restore shine and protect your hair from harmful chemicals.

“If you are swimming during the summer or swim regularly, wet your natural hair before going into the ocean or pool,” Maggiore says. “Then apply a leave-in treatment to seal the hair. This will help minimize the amount of salt water or chlorine that gets into your hair.”

However, protecting your hair from chlorine isn’t the only precaution that you should take during the summer months. “Remember that the sun can have damaging effects on your hair as well, so always choose products with SPF,” says Maggiore.

3. Experiment with an oil treatment

If you’re still having trouble taming your frizzy mane, and you’re looking for a product that goes beyond the typical shampoo and conditioner set, you may want to try an oil treatment to combat the dryness you face from constantly blow-drying, straightening, or applying other methods of heat to your hair.

“I apply the Garnier oil treatment when I get out of the shower, or even on the ends of my hair if it’s dry,” Carly says. Instead of reaching for the blow-dryer as soon as you get out of the shower, try air-drying your hair and applying an oil treatment instead. Not only is this process healthier, but it will also save you tons of time in the morning.

However, we understand that sometimes there’s no way around using a straightener or curler when you need to style your hair. “Just remember to always use styling products (such as oil treatments) that protect the hair before flatironing or using a curling iron,” says Maggiore.

Hair elixirs also work similarly to oil treatments to help you fight frizz in dry and curly hair.

4. Keep dryer sheets handy

That’s right, collegiettes—dryer sheets are no longer just for the laundry room. According to Courtney Klauber, a senior at Rowan University, using dryer sheets can help combat hair static throughout the day.

“I always have dryer sheets on me for when my hair gets too static-y, which happens to me a lot, especially in colder temperatures,” Courtney says. “I just run the dryer sheet over my hair, and bye-bye static!”

Why not stash a few dryer sheets in your purse or bag next time you go out? Who knows—they just may come in handy!

5. Switch up your part

When styling their hair, many collegiettes don’t put much thought into how their part falls. However, adjusting your part can turn your entire look around if you’re running late and don’t have time to shower—let alone straighten—your messy mane.

“Try switching up your part,” says Maggiore. “If you normally wear it on the left side, try parting it on the right. This will disguise any oily strands while adding extra volume.”

If you’re still desperate for a last-minute look, don’t count out tried-and-true options like the classic braid. “Braids and ponytails are always great options for on the go,” says Maggiore. “No matter how much or how little time you have put into styling your hair, you can always look pulled together and gorgeous by keeping a brush, bobby pins, and hair ties on your hand for quick, on-the-go hairstyles.”

Whether you’re fed up with frizz, sick of your straight hair, looking for better curls or for a way to control your oily scalp, there’s always something you can try to make your hair situation a little less stressful. Stay positive, collegiettes—good hair days are on the way!
