How She Got There: Dara Kaplan, Founder of Girlfluence

0
0

Name: Dara Kaplan

Age: 30
Job Title and Description: Founder of Girlfluence and Partner at Wunderlich Inc PR
College Name/Major: Syracuse University/Fashion Design and Psychology
Website: www.Girlfluence.com
Twitter Handle: @BelleDuJourNYC

What does your current job entail? Is there such a thing as a typical day?

Dara Kaplan: Where do I start? I don't even call it a job. My career is part of who I am and my life, it entails so many things and I juggle so much at once; meeting the women that Girlfluence works with, speaking with brands to connect our influencers with, social media strategy and management for clients, managing client relationships to media outreach and PR Strategy for Wunderlich Inc PR (where I am a partner), scouting my next travel destination and the latest new lipstick formula (I also am a travel and beauty editor for Bella NYC Magazine), and lastly, trying to squeeze in time to upload a beauty video to my YouTube channel.

The funny thing is, I don't think it is a lot, I love it all and it makes every day so interesting. I am excited to delve into my day every day when I wake up. It is definitely the way of the future, the "multipreneur.”

What is the best part of your job?

DK: The interaction I have on a daily basis with inspiring, intelligent, creative, entrepreneurial women. The excitement of what the day will bring.

What was your first entry-level job in your field and how did you get it?

DK: I was an assistant buyer at Kiki De Montparnasse, which then lead me to be head of buying and merchandising. I started as an intern for the design department upstairs for the creative director, who was Jennifer Zuccarini at the time (now founder of Fleur Du Mal, the ultra cool lingerie brand). I interned for eight months, which seemed like forever to my 21-year-old self.

One day, the buyer asked to borrow me for a day to help her. I remember working on Excel spreadsheets. I am very detail-oriented and remember going though it with a fine-tooth comb. She was so impressed that the following week she hired me as her assistant. Lesson to be learned here is persistence and attention to detail!

Who is one person who changed your professional life for the better?

DK: I have four people. Is that allowed? I have never been one to follow rules. The first is above mentioned, Jennifer Zuccarini. She gave me a chance and was always so kind. Kindness rules all.

The second is Kerry Diamond, who was at Lancôme at the time, but since then founded cool girl magazine Cherry Bombe. She took me to lunch (at Mercer Kitchen, I obviously remember it well) once after finding my beauty blog and encouraged me to start a YouTube channel. I took her advice seriously, as she is the one who put Michelle Phan in place for her Lancôme role, and is a beauty veteran. She launched Beauty Biz Under Women’s Wear Daily (I mean, hello?! Huge!). Before that, I would have never thought to do that. Without doing so, I would have never learned the inner workings of creating a beauty YouTube channel or have met the amazing girls and women that I have through it.

The third person is my co-founder in Girlfluence and partner in Wunderlich Inc PR, Gwen Wunderlich. She taught me to always go for it and continually shows me how she can talk anyone into anything. I recently watched her get a client onto the TODAY Show after the producer must have said no 10 times. I always say she can sell ice to an eskimo. Her charisma is something to aspire to have.

Last person is my dad. He instilled my entrepreneurial spirit into me from a young age and taught me to never take no for an answer (he still doesn't, especially from me).

What words of wisdom do you find most valuable?

DK: Listen to your gut. Be kind. Don't ever give up or back down, and stay true to yourself at all costs.

What is one mistake you made along the way and what did you learn from it?

DK: Oh boy, I made so many. It is hard to count, but I think one mistake was staying in a job where at a certain point there was no one to learn from, and it was not a positive environment. Take the leap if you are unhappy! I think it’s very important to always surround yourself with uplifting and inspiring people whether in work or your personal life.

What do you look for when considering hiring someone?

DK: Motivated, resourceful, positive and detail-oriented.

What advice would you give to a 20-something with similar aspirations?

DK: Dream big, and do not let anyone tell you that you can't do something. Intern! Intern! Intern!

I also think it is very important to dress for the job you want. It is a running joke that I always put on makeup, even with the flu and [when I] have no meetings to see anyone for that day. I believe it is always important to look your best, because you just never know what the day will bring.

Lastly, the world is changing so rapidly, especially my industry of influencer marketing and PR, so it is important to keep reading and learning on a constant basis.

The 17 Stages of Online Shopping

0
0

There’s nothing like a little retail therapy—especially when it includes kicking back and shopping online in your pajamas. Shopaholics everywhere, rejoice as we break down the 17 stages of online shopping that we’ve all been through. Oh, but is it worth it!

1. You’re bored out of your mind, so you decide to casually browse your favorite shopping sites.

Definitely more fun than studying.

2. You’re pleasantly surprised by how many things you’re loving. If you don’t buy it, someone else will, right?

You never knew you could be this in love with overalls.

3. You add a million things to your shopping cart and then realize that the total price is outrageous.

Oh no.

4. You tirelessly search for a coupon.

Do discounts still exist? And if so, where are they hiding?

5. You’ll even go so far as to sign up for promotional emails to get that extra 10 percent off.

Hopefully, you can unsubscribe later.

6. You can finally breathe a sigh of relief that you’ve saved a few extra bucks…

Crisis averted.

7. ...until you realize shipping is astronomically expensive.

Not going to happen.

8. You go to crazy lengths to get free shipping. If you spend $50 more, the $15 shipping won't cost you a thing. Score!

It may not sound logical, but it has to be done.

9. Particularly impressed by your savvy shopping skills, you race to enter the credit card number you've memorized from doing this so many times.

It’s almost too easy to spend money.

10. You complete your purchase with the emphasis of victory and wait impatiently to get your confirmation email.

The waiting is the worst part.

11. Just as the high from shopping fades you learn that your package has shipped and is on its way to your waiting arms.

Best. Day. Ever.

12. But this only comforts you for a moment as you deal with the suspense of actually receiving your brand new haul.

Any day now.

13. Surprise! It’s a super mail day when the boxes of goodies arrive, and you rip into them to try everything on.

And there’s bubble wrap inside!

14. Except nothing fits the way you thought it would, and the stuff looks nothing like it did in the pictures on the website.

Your worst fear is now a reality.

15. Solemnly, you prepare to return it all, but never do.

Should you start a donation pile?

16. You shove the rejects to the back of your closet, where they'll be forgotten until after that 60-day return policy ends.

Oops.

17. You know what would make you feel infinitely better? A little online shopping, of course.

You'll never learn.

Disney Princess Life vs. Real Life

0
0

Let’s be real, we all wanted to grow up to be Disney Princesses. The beautiful dresses, the huge castles… not to mention a handsome Prince Charming to live happily ever after with! It’s easy to get our hopes up with all of the expectations that Disney sets. Too bad our realities are slightly different from those of animated princesses...

Princess Life: Waking up and getting ready is effortless. Those woodland creatures are just so helpful!

Reality: No number of cute animals will make you on time for your 8 a.m. class or fix your bed head.

Princess Life: Living in a castle with a beautiful, spacious room is a given.

Reality: Gotta love your eight-by-eight square-foot shoebox that you share with a roommate. #dormlife

Princess Life: True love at first sight is a real thing. Happens all the time.

Reality: Does a drunken hookup at a bar count?

Princess Life: Sure, you may have to kiss a frog, but he'll totally turn into the man of your dreams shortly afterwards.

Reality: Five frat bros later, you're starting to believe you're doomed to kissing frogs forever.

Princess Life: Bad hair days never exist because your locks look flawless no matter what the conditions are.

Reality: Thank goodness for dry shampoo because your second-day hair is looking like a greasy hot mess. Hat day anyone?

Princess Life: You lose a shoe? Your prince will use it to find you and marry you.

Reality: You lose a shoe? Girl, go home, you’re drunk.

Princess Life: If you just love someone enough, he or she'll turn from a horrible beast into Prince Charming. People really can change.

Reality: Nope, he’s still an assh*le.

Princess Life: Finding the perfect dress is easy! Then you find a prince at the ball and all your dreams come true.

Reality: It takes hours to find a mediocre outfit that you end up spilling your drink on anyways. Your only true dream is pizza at the end of the night.

Princess Life: Princes will search far and wide, face danger and devote all their time to find their one true love.

Reality: Receiving a text from your crush before 11 p.m. is considered a win.

Princess Life: In the end, the bad guys always lose and the princess ends up on top.

Reality: Frenemies always exist. That girl who really annoys you will always really annoy you.

Princess Life: Your Prince Charming will arrive on horseback and sweep you away to live happily ever after.

Reality: Swiping right on Tinder is basically the closest thing you have to a date.

Princess Life: But hey, at least you always have magic to make life that much more special.

Reality: JK, but you totally have Nutella and that's WAY better.

Real Live College Guy: He’s Still On Tinder, So Is He Cheating?

We all need a little guidance now and then, so whether you’re stressed about a fling gone wrong, a recently wrecked relationship or how to handle a stage-five clinger, Real Live College Guy Dale is here to help you navigate the college dating scene.

I recently found out my boyfriend is active on his Tinder account after we had mutually deleted accounts. He's a pretty busy guy, but lately, I feel like he's using "work" to avoid hanging out and talking. Last night, he said he loved me and that he would call me to say goodnight. I never got a call, but his Tinder profile clearly states when he was active... He chose flipping through Tinder over calling me. I'm afraid he's cheating, but I don't know what to think or do. -Hopeless in Oregon

Oregon,

I’ll keep this short and sweet: If the guy is lying to you about Tinder, he’s probably lying to you about other things. While I’d love to tell you to confront him about it and get the truth, I’m almost certain that he’s just going to lie to you then, too, and you’ll be right back where you started. Of course, you could give him an ultimatum, but I feel like he would probably take you up on that ultimatum (and by that, I mean he would break up with you).

It’s kind of like A + B = C. Here, “A” represents the fact that he still has and is presumably still using Tinder. “B” represents him using “work” as a reason to avoid hanging out or talking. “C,” the result, is him probably hooking up with girls from Tinder while he’s at “work.”

Just a shot in the dark here, but this guy seems like a liar. Maybe he doesn’t like being in a monogamous relationship, but that doesn’t mean you need to suffer for that.

You two were supposed to delete your accounts. He’s avoiding you for some reason, and he’s still active on Tinder (which is virtual hook-up capital).

You want my opinion? Drop him. You’ll find a better replacement in no time, if you even want one. You’ve already given him a chance, and if you feel like you’re being cheated on or out of a fair relationship, then you don’t need to stick around. Show him who’s boss, Oregon. Might I suggest you do so by reactivating your own Tinder account? Just be sure to swipe left.

5 Celeb BFFs We Wish We Were Friends With

0

If you've ever found yourself stalking your favorite celeb's social media envying their friendships, don't worry—you're not alone. Sometimes you can't help but see photos of Taylor Swift baking cookies with her famous friends and wonder if your invite got lost in the mail. Here are some celebrity BFFs we wish we could hang out with!

1. Taylor Swift & Karlie Kloss

Not only are these two BFFs, they also look a lot alike! Taylor and her supermodel BFF Karlie have been inseperable lately. These two don't just spend every minute together, but they perform together, too. Taylor got to join her bestie on the runway at the last Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. We wish we could hang out with the stylish duo, but for now we'll have to stick with stalking all their road trip photos on Instagram.

2. Tina Fey & Amy Poehler

Spending a day with Tina and Amy would definitely guarantee some laughs. These funny ladies have been friends since their early days at The Second City in Chicago. Twenty years later their friendship is still going strong as they host award shows side-by-side and co-star in some of the funniest movies ever. We're probably not the only ones wishing we could have been sitting at the SNL Weekend Update desk with these hilarious BFFs.

3. John Krasinski & Jimmy Kimmel

You may not know that John and Jimmy are close friends—and neighbors. That's right, these two live close by in LA, and they both take advantage of sharing each other's house keys. These BFFs are known for pulling some of the most elaborate pranks on one another, especially during the holiday season. These two also vacation together with their wives, but where's our invite?

4. Abbi Jacobson & Ilana Glazer

Broad City creators and stars Abbi and Ilana seem to have the craziest adventures in New York City. They first met at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre and instantly hit it off (even though Abbi first mistook Ilana for Alia Shawkat). After starting their own web series their hilarious show got picked up by Comedy Central and just finished its second season. These two are definitely close, and it seems nothing is off limits when it comes to helping each other out... even in regards to intimate encounters and bowel movements. Spending a day in the city with these two would be quite an interesting experience.

5. Justin Timberlake & Jimmy Fallon

Our favorite bromance, Justin and Jimmy, have made us laugh over and over again with their History of Rap performances and endless crazy SNL sketches. Every time Justin is a guest on Jimmy's show you probably find yourself watching and re-watching their hilarious interviews and funny bits. With musical talent and perfect comedic timing, these two are the ultimate package. Next time these two host SNL, we want a front row seat and an invite to the after party.

Gender Discrimination Lawsuits are Becoming More Prevalent in Silicon Valley

0
0

Though Silicon Valley boasts some seriously powerful women (ahem, Facebook CEO Sheryl Sandberg and Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer), the tech bubble still has some very big issues that need to be worked out. Lately, an increasing number of women working at the biggest companies in this area have been suing their employers for gender discrimination. As a minority in a male-dominated industry, these women have felt they were unfairly denied promotions and even let go based on their gender.

Just this weekend, a California judged ruled that Ellen Pao, who is suing the venture capital firm she works at, could seek punitive damages from her company, which could end up amounting to tens of millions of dollars in lost wages and bonuses, according to the New York Times. In a similar vein, a former Twitter software engineer is suing the company over the vague procedure it follows for employee promotions. Tina Huang, who left Twitter in June, alleges that secret management committees make promotional decisions, which in turn allows for a "gender imbalance in Twitter's technical workforce," according to Mashable.

Though Pao's and Huang's gender discrimination cases stem from issues concerning job promotions, a case involving Facebook points to other matters. Chia Hong was fired from the multi-billion dollar company back in 2013, but her lawsuit against the company is still in the works. According to the Times, Hong faced discrimination, harassment and retaliation. Aside from asserting that her termination was a result of her gender and Taiwanese descent, Hong alleges that she was belittled, reprimanded for taking time off to see her child and even "ordered to serve drinks to male colleagues" at parties she had to organize.

While there are always two sides to a case, the allegations put forth by these women are unnerving. We're hoping the industry as a whole gets its act together soon!

5 Things to Have on Your Resume by Senior Year

0
0

You might not want to believe it, but senior year is quietly sneaking up around the corner. It all feels a little surreal right now, but once senior year does hit, things get all too real—everyone will be scrambling to find a job, juggling schoolwork and trying to squeeze in every last possible bit of fun before entering the daunting adult world all at the same time. Talk about a full plate!

Instead of frantically scrambling to put together a resume during job-hunting season, you can get a head start now before entering the chaos that is senior year. Check out these five things to have on your resume by your final year of college so you'll be all set to impress those employers by the time recruiting season starts!

1. Internships

As college students, we just can't seem to escape all the buzz about internships, and rightly so. In today's competitive job market, internship experience is a must-have, and employers will have their eyes peeled for the word "intern" when they scan your resume. Ideally, work to score an internship the summer following your junior year. And if you've had additional internship experience from the previous summer or during the academic year, all the better.

"Employers expect to see internships on a resume because this says you have some experience in the professional world," says Martin Yate, author of Knock ‘em Dead – Secrets & Strategies for First-Time Job Seekers. "Internships give you experience, credentials, connections, a stronger resume and references. This is why nine out of 10 entry-level jobs go to candidates with internship history. [Internships are] the ticket to a good entry-level job out of college and a fast career start.”

And remember, the internships don't actually have to be paid to make a difference on your resume, because it's the experience that counts! What's valuable about an internship isn't so much how lucrative or competitive it is rather than the experiences and learning you take away from it.

Tina Sims, who runs a resume-writing service for military members, spouses and federal employees, agrees that internship experience will give resumes an extra boost. "Many employers use a scanning technology to weed out applicants," Sims says. "This scanning technology is looking for keywords relevant to the position, and while a college student may not have the paid experience, the scanner is only looking for the vocabulary, not whether the experience was gained while employed."

Internships seem to have become the new entry-level jobs, so if you haven't already, it's high time to go out there and get some real-world experience! There are plenty of resources just a mouse click away, like InternMatch and Lauren Berger's InternQueen.com, so what are you waiting for?

2. Other work experience

Internships aren't the only way to spruce up your resume before senior year comes around; other work experience, like part-time jobs and seasonal jobs, can also be valuable! From being a TA during the semester to working part-time at the coffeehouse down the street, work experience is work experience no matter what form it comes in, even if it isn't exactly related to your future career plans. And you can start building it up now!

"Work experience, even unrelated to the field of study or future pursuits, should be noted on the resume," says Jan Melnik, resume writer and career coach. "For internships and work experiences, key contributions/areas of responsibility/accomplishments should be noted, leading off with verbs."

So whether you're working away in a tall office building somewhere or working in retail at a local boutique, any job that you have now will not only help you prepare for the real world, but will also be one more thing you can add to your resume.

3. Extracurricular activities

Is there a cause that you're super passionate about? Maybe an organization you’ve been helping out or a club you like dedicating your time to? You can make a difference, have fun and improve your resume all at the same time by pursuing extracurricular activities like volunteering.

Volunteer positions and side gigs are all fair game and will help paint a clearer picture of your abilities, character and potential for the employers. By senior year, it's good to have a number of activities besides internships in order to demonstrate how responsible and capable you are. Definitely work with what you've got!

If your extracurricular work doesn't seem to relate to your field, pick and choose the ones that are the most relevant to the position you're applying to, whether it's because of the skills you've learned, because it demonstrates qualities such as teamwork or because it shows familiarity with certain aspects of the job. These entries can be included in the Community/Volunteerism/Extracurricular section of your resume, which usually comes after your Education and Professional Experience sections.

4. Work accomplishments

With your newfound job or internship also comes an opportunity that you didn't have before—the chance to make some work accomplishments! You've got your awards, academic honors and leadership roles, but including work accomplishments on your resume will make you especially stand out to potential employers. While anyone can list off tasks and duties that she's completed, not everyone can say that she went above and beyond the call of duty.

"While the tasks and duties that you have completed are important to show your experience, the accomplishments you have achieved are much more telling of the kind of employee you will be," Sims says. "An employer may be considering two candidates who have the same experience, but the one who will stand out is the one who went beyond that experience and earned recognition for their willingness to take on additional duties or complicated projects."

Of course, accomplishments don't have to have been officially recognized. According to Sims, they could be as simple as solving a problem, streamlining processes, saving money or saving time. If you feel like you took the extra step and made a difference for your employers, consider including that with the rest of the job description for a certain work experience entry on your resume.

"It's no longer enough to simply do the work you are assigned; You always want to be thinking about how you can do more," Sims says. "The job market is very competitive now and requires one to always be striving to make a difference, to stand out above the competition. If your resume is one in a stack of 500, you will want to be sure you have really articulated your skills, abilities, accomplishments and experiences as professionally and concisely as possible."

So take pride in your work, don't be afraid to go the extra mile and show those potential employers that you've got that extra little something!

5. A professional online presence

With the undeniable presence of the Internet and social media in basically everything we do, it should come as no surprise that employers are now more inclined to check out your online presence when hiring. For you, that means establishing an online presence in the first place. From the professional networking site LinkedIn to potentially more creative sites like WordPress, having a strong profile online that showcases your work and skills is a fantastic way to stand out.

"Each student should have created a full LinkedIn profile—free account is fine!—and customize their URL that is also included in resume header," Melnik says.

According to Melnik, your LinkedIn URL can go right along with your contact information at the very top of your resume. In addition, make sure to include one good phone number with a professional voicemail that provides your full name for callers, as well as a professional-looking email address. Not only will this make you seem serious about the job, it will also make it easier for the resume reader to get a sense of who you are with one quick glance, which is always good considering how many resumes he or she has to go through!

Basically, it all boils down to showing the employers that you have a strong track record. You need to convince the hiring managers that you're trustworthy and totally worth it. Luckily, you can start building a good reputation for yourself now, so that once job-hunting season comes around senior year, you'll be ready to sweep everyone off their feet!

Which one of these fragrances tops your list, collegiettes?

What to Eat to Beautify Your Hair, Skin & Nails

0
0

Let’s be real: The phrase “you are what you eat” is semi-terrifying. After all, that means most days we’d be a giant jar of Nutella.

However, there is a good aspect to being what you eat. According to Brigitte Zeitlin, a registered dietitian, and Lisa Drayer, a registered dietitian and author of The Beauty Diet, there are a ton of vitamins and minerals with beautifying effects. So when you eat certain whole foods (like, say, strawberries dipped in your Nutella), you get doses of micronutrients that will make your hair shinier, your nails stronger and your skin clearer.

You might be wondering why you can’t just skip the strawberries in favor of a supplement or pill, but Zeitlin says it’s much better to eat whole foods. “Supplements aren’t regulated by the Food and Drug Administration,” she says. “There’s no way to tell what you’re getting.”

In addition, Zeitlin explains that when you take a supplement, you only get one nutrient. When you eat whole foods, you get a whole range. So forget the makeup counter or the supplement sites—let’s hit the grocery store.

1. Biotin

If you literally want to be healthy from head to toe, make sure you’re consuming enough biotin. Drayer says that a biotin deficiency will not only lead to hair loss, but it can also make your nails brittle.

Getting enough of this micronutrient is also helpful for your skin. “Biotin prevents aging, helps reduce wrinkles and promotes skin health and beauty,” Zeitlin says. She suggests 30 to 35 micrograms (mcg) per day, but says there’s no upper limit, which means no one has observed any negative effects from consuming too much biotin.

“I recommend biotin-rich foods such as salmon, chicken, walnuts, yogurt, wheat germ, eggs, and whole-grain cereals and whole-wheat breads,” Drayer says.

2. Vitamin C

“Vitamin C is a definite component of beauty health,” Zeitlin says. It promotes collagen production, which makes skin “plump, wrinkle-free and fresh.” The antioxidant also makes your hair and nails grow faster and stronger.

Since your body can’t make its own Vitamin C, it’s important that you incorporate lots of food that contain it into your diet. The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) is 75 milligrams (mg) per day for women over 19 who don’t smoke.

“You can find Vitamin C in strawberries, blueberries, red bell peppers, sweet potatoes—and definitely citrus, such as grapefruits and tangerines,” Zeitlin says. A large strawberry has a little more than 10 milligrams of Vitamin C, so if you ate just three, you’d hit half your Vitamin C RDA.

3. Omega-3 fatty acids

We love dots on our sweaters and skirts. On our faces? Not so much. To banish your blemishes, you’ll want to consume a good amount of omega-3 fatty acids. “These nutrients are anti-inflammatory, meaning they reduce inflammation under the skin,” Zeitlin says. “That inflammation is what causes your blackheads and whiteheads.”

Not only do omega-3s clear up your skin, they also help prevent clogged pores, fine lines and dry, scaly skin.

Ready to start reaping these amazing benefits? “The adequate intake for omega-3 fatty acids for females 19 and older is 1.1 grams per day,” Drayer says. “Good sources include fatty fish like salmon, herring, trout, mackerel and sardines, as well as plant sources such as walnuts, flaxseeds and chia seeds.” Zeitlin adds that you can also get omega-3s from avocados, olive oil, almonds and olives.

A 3-ounce portion of salmon (which is about the size of a deck of cards) has more than 1.5 grams of omega-3s. Chia seeds contain even more: each serving will give you 5 grams.

An upper limit for omega-3 fatty acids hasn’t been issued, so as long as you’re eating a whole range of foods, you won’t have an “overdose.”

4. Selenium

Some of us love our short hair, some of us want Rapunzel-like length, but nobody wants dandruff. That’s why selenium is so awesome: It’s a mineral that, according to Zeitlin, helps our scalps stay free of dandruff-causing fungus.

And when it comes to our skin, selenium is a triple threat. Not only does it protect us against sun damage and burning, Drayer says, but it also has anti-inflammatory properties.

The RDA for women is 55 mcg. You’ll get four times that amount with just one Brazil nut, which contains 200 mcg. (The National Institutes of Health actually warns us not to eat Brazil nuts too often since they have so much selenium.)

You can also get the mineral from fish, whole grains, and mushrooms, according to Zeitlin.

5. Vitamin D

When women want to justify tanning, they typically say something along the lines of, “I’m getting my dose of Vitamin D!”

There’s no doubt this vitamin is great for your skin. It can boost your production of collagen, make your skin more supple and glowing, and make blemishes less noticeable. “I call vitamin D the magic vitamin,” Zeitlin says. “It’s good for everything!”

Unfortunately, while she confirms that the sun is in fact the best source of Vitamin D, she also warns sun overexposure can lead to sunburn, skin cancer, premature skin aging and even damage to your immune system.

So what’s a conscientious collegiette to do? First, you can get Vitamin D from foods like fortified milk, fortified dairy such as cheese and yogurt and fortified cereals. (Fortified means the manufacturers have added micro-nutrients to the food.)

According to Zeitlin, we should try to get approximately 1000 international units, or IU, of Vitamin D per day. One cup of fortified milk is around a tenth of your RDA. A serving of fortified cereal will give you 4 percent.

As you can see, it can be difficult to hit your RDA with food. Zeitlin says this is the one time she does recommend a supplement—especially during the winter months, when you’re getting even less sun than usual. Most Vitamin D supplements only contain around 400 IU, so if you do take a pill, make sure you’re also eating foods with Vitamin D in them.

One small step to the fridge means one huge leap for your hair, nails and skin. While you won’t see effects overnight, our experts agree a long-term commitment to a healthy, balanced diet will have you looking even more beautiful than ever. (We know, we didn’t think it was possible either.) Turns out being what you eat isn’t so bad after all.

15 Songs We're Embarrassed to STILL Know All the Lyrics To

0
0

We’ve all been there. You’re listening to your music on shuffle, and suddenly, a super oldie—we’re talking like the '90s!—comes on. You contemplate skipping it; but surprisingly, you remember all the words and before you know it, you’re jamming to the best of Britney. We’re betting there are more than a few songs in your playlist that this rule applies to. Below, we’re revisiting some of our old faves that we’re kind of embarrassed to STILL know all the lyrics to.

1. Hollaback Girl – Gwen Stefani

You'll never forget how to spell bananas ever again.

2. Beautiful Soul – Jesse McCartney

It’s like he’s singing about you, you know?

3. Bye Bye Bye – ‘N Sync

Whip this one out the next time your SO starts testing your nerves. They’ll either be impressed or totally horrified.

4. Wannabe – Spice Girls

Some of these words are made up, right?

5. Survivor – Destiny’s Child

Ever need to feel better about your uncertain future? Blast this and think about how great Beyoncé’s life turned out!

6. Jenny from the Block – Jennifer Lopez

J. Lo may be a glamorous, high-profile celebrity who has secretly discovered the fountain of youth, but she'll always be Jenny from the Block.

7. Genie in a Bottle – Christina Aguilera

We have to admit we kind of know the dance, too.

8. Baby One More Time – Britney Spears

Schoolgirl Britney bests snake wrangler Britney every time.

9. What Dreams Are Made Of – Hilary Duff

Lizzie McGuire takes the stage in Italy after being mistaken for a doppelganger pop star? Not exactly realistic, but wow is it inspirational!

10. Since U Been Gone – Kelly Clarkson

Forget the random misspelling of “you” in the title. This song is still one of the most rocking break-up anthems of all time.

11. I Want It That Way – Backstreet Boys

Guys were so much more straightforward in 1999. Maybe because of the whole Y2K scare?

12. Bring It All Back – S Club 7

Plug in your dusty 'ole boom box and dare to dream!

13. Yeah – Usher

There's a reason they still play this at prom.

14. Milkshake – Kelis

How did she make such a tasty treat sound so dirty?!

15. Don't Cha – The Pussycat Dolls

We’ll excuse the girl-bashing just this one time.

What other throwback songs are you still (secretly) singing, collegiettes?

Cheap Wine Might Be WAY Unhealthier Than You Think

0

If you're a wine-loving collegiette, chances are you've found a few affordable brands to support your vino habit over the past few years. Beloved, cheap brands like Charles Shaw (otherwise known as Trader Joe's "Two-Buck Chucks") and Franzia may contain nearly five times of the maximum amount of arsenic that the Environmental Protection Agency deems safe to consume, according to a CBS report

Unfortunately, the less expensive the wine is, the more arsenic it is expected to contain, according to Kevin Hicks, the founder of a company in Denver called BeverageGrades, an "independent third party lab testing facility of wine, beer and spirits." After Hicks tested 1,300 bottles of wine, he found that 25 percent of them had higher arsenic levels than the EPA allows in drinking water. However, since the EPA's standards only apply to drinking water, it's unknown how the level of arsenic in wine could actually affect consumers, since they drink significantly less wine than water.

A class action lawsuit accusing winemakers of promoting harmful products is now being filed in California, according to Cosmopolitan. Until more information is released, it's probably smart to leave the boxed stuff behind and to stick to the wines that have been approved by BeverageGrades—hey, we're ust investing in our health here!

21 Ways to Answer ‘Are You Seeing Anyone?’

0
0

When going through a dry spell, recovering from a recent breakup or successfully maintaining your perpetually single lifestyle, it can seem like the entire world suddenly cares about your love life. Everyone from long-lost friends from high school to old neighbors and family friends whom you haven’t seen in a while all seem to ask the same dreaded question: “Are you seeing anyone?”

They don’t mean any harm; they’re just trying to ask you about your life. But when you’re so used to hearing this question and so annoyed of saying, “no,” sometimes it’s fun to switch up your responses. Here are 21 different way to respond to those curious minds.

1. “Yes, I’m actually seeing three different people right now… on different continents. I’m really good at multitasking and communicating.”

2. Walk away.

3. Burst into tears and babble hysterically until he or she apologizes: “I thought you knew… he was in the gross anatomy lab… my friend called me asking for my favorite pizza topping… he was with cadavers all day… she never knew I hated pepperoni… and then there was the snake tattoo on his arm…”

4. “I’m going to Rome for a year and I don’t want to be tied down when I’m surrounded by all those Italian men who are just dying to bring me home to their mothers and feed me homemade pasta.”

5. “I’m definitely in a relationship with Barefoot Moscato. Does that count?”

6. “I’m joining a convent. I’m really looking forward to taking that vow of chastity.”

7. “I’m on a boycott. You know, a boy-cott.”

8. “No… but someone proposed to me at a bar last week. Does that count?”

9. “Have you heard of this ‘hook-up culture?’ I think I’m a lifetime member.”

10. “I’m in love with myself. Isn’t that enough?”

11. “Not exactly… I just joined a cult where we don’t believe in any sort of lasting, committed relationships. We just use one another to keep the population populated.”

12. “I see people all the time. I’m seeing you right now!”

13. “Actually, I’ve found paper folding and basket weaving to be a better use of my time. Those are two of my new favorite hobbies, you know, since I’m single.”

14. “Well, I’ve started training my dog for the circus, so that takes up a considerable amount of time.”

15. Pull him or her aside and whisper, “Did my mother tell you to ask me that?!”

16. “Ughhh, I only ever match with weird guys on Tinder!”

17. “I’ll be honest. I am ‘on the prowl,’ but guys just don’t seem to be picking up what I’m putting down.”

18. “Yes, and he’s already got two kids of his own, so you’ll get those grandchildren you’ve been waiting for!”

19. “My dog fulfills my need for companionship. So do my cats… and my guinea pig.”

20. “Have you seen the majority of the male population lately?!”

21. Point to a random guy and say, “Him. We just don’t like to interact in public settings.”

Real Live College Guy: Would It Be Too Awkward To Ask Him Out?

0
0

We all need a little guidance now and then, so whether you’re stressed about a fling gone wrong, a recently wrecked relationship or how to handle a stage-five clinger, Real Live College Guy Dale is here to help you navigate the college dating scene.

I saw this guy last semester and immediately thought he was cute. After passing many classes staring at him - and him catching my eye a few times - I finally introduced myself. After that, I never got the chance to really speak to him, as he always came to class at the last minute. This semester, he is in a few of my classes, and I haven't spoken to him, but whenever I would look in his direction I could notice that he would stare. Once, he even turned backwards and looked me straight in the eye during the lecture, when I wasn't even looking at him. So, is it worth it to strike up a conversation with him or would be it be too awkward after the back and forth staring? -Confused at UOttowa

Ottowa,

You go up to him and you re-introduce yourself, and you ask him if he wants to hang out after class. Clearly you two have some sort of strange physical attraction (or he’s obsessed with you, but hey, at least that’s something right?), and you just need to get the ball rolling.

I don’t know what there is to do on your campus, but assuming you ask him out or he eventually asks you out, you’re going to have to find somewhere to go together, right? I wouldn’t suggest coffee (too cliché), but see if he wants to grab lunch sometime. Don’t feign ignorance and ask him for help with studying (unless you really need it, and even then…). Just tell him that you never got the chance to see if he wanted to get together sometime and that you’d definitely like to.

Hey, maybe even poke fun at the fact that you’ve caught him staring at you a few times. Then he might come back with something like, “Nuh-uh, you were staring at me!” Which could be followed up with a cute laugh and a firm denial, with you insisting that he stared first. Boom, now you’re flirting. I would recommend that you wait until after class to hit him up, otherwise if it goes poorly you don’t have to sit in class stewing in your embarrassment.

Is it going to be awkward? Yes, probably. Asking someone out is never not awkward, but sometimes you just have to take a deep breath and jump off the high-dive.

The Top 17 Disney Channel Original Movies

0
0

Disney Channel Original Movies, also known as DCOMs, came to define our childhood. We laughed, we cried and we blatantly disregarded flawed plots and bad acting, because at the end of the day they were perfect just they way they were. Here's a definitive ranking of Disney Channel Original Movies to end the debate once and for all.

17. Jump In!

Maybe Disney was like, “Hey, High School Musical did really well - let’s take one of the secondary characters and give them a different movie and see what happens…” Either way, this jump rope movie starring Corbin Bleu was definitely all hype. Don’t get us wrong, the jump rope skills were cool and all, and we were still on that HSM high, but Jump In! was a somewhat forgettable DCOM.

16. The Thirteenth Year

There’s definitely nothing wrong with The Thirteenth Year, but forgive us if we’re just a little bitter that a boy gets to turn into a mermaid and not us. And like quit complaining dude, you get to be a mermaid. You’re living out our wildest dreams!

15. Johnny Tsunami

This one is just such a classic. There’s a good chance you can barely even remember what the plot of the movie consisted of, but when you think 'Disney Channel Original Movie,' you think Johnny Tsunami. Surf’s up, dude (or whatever it is they say).

14. The Even Stevens Movie

Shia LaBeouf before he got super hot/kinda weird. This was easily the best movie spin-off of a Disney Channel series. And Ren’s love interest? Total babe. The plotline of them being tricked by this hidden camera show and the cliffhanger when you think for a second that Louis died… it’s almost something close to cinematic genius.

13. Gotta Kick It Up

Si, se puede! Si, se puede! Yes we can! (Which is not an accurate translation, btw, Disney.) Who doesn’t love a classic cheer movie where a team of misfits comes together and beats the odds? This almost-knock-off of Bring It On does not disappoint. Plus the sass is unbeatable.

12. Double Teamed

Twins who play basketball – let’s make it into a movie. The fact that it’s based on a true story is very cool. And the girls’ struggle to fit in and win over the b*tchy girl (which they ultimately do with their dad’s grilled cheese a.k.a. grilled cheese is bae) is the exact amount of girl drama to keep us interested in a sports flick. Plus there’s something so mesmerizing about tall people.

11. Motocrossed

First off, hella respect to this girl for cutting off all her hair just to prove that she’s good enough to compete with the boys and step in for her brother. That’s real dedication right there. But much more importantly, her love interest is real hot. Like we’ll happily just stare at him the whole time, thank you.

10. Brink!

Erik von Detton and his beautiful golden locks were the golden nugget of Disney. Soul-Skaters over Team X-Bladz any day… those kids were total tools, not to mention sellouts. Even when Brink has a lapse in judgment, a flip of that gorgeous hair makes us forget his disloyalty to his team.

9. The Luck of the Irish

Starring “that kid who was in every DCOM and later went on to become a Pretty Little Liars villain” you can’t not watch The Luck of the Irish when it’s on TV. Why exactly is he turning into a leprechaun? Who knows. But every time we’re still on the edge of our seats when he’s trying to beat the bad guys in that basketball game. Will he win??

8. Eddie’s Million Dollar Cook-Off

Perhaps the best DCOM cameo of all time when Bobby Flay comes into the picture, there is just something so satisfying about this movie. That purple goop that gets Eddie into the competition looks so gross yet so so good. We were all inspired to be chefs. And Eddie was pretty hot… right?

7. Camp Rock

It’s slightly painful to have something involving the Jonas Brothers this high up in the list, but whether we’d like to admit it or not, they really did steal all of our hearts (even if only for a short period of time). And Demi Lovato in her prime? Not to mention the catchy songs of a DCOM musical with cheesy romance mixed in between? What’s not to love?!

6. Cheetah Girls

“'Cause we are sisters. We stick together… Cheetah Girls Cheetah Sisters.” Try not to sing along. Just try. Enough said.

5. Cadet Kelly

Hilary Duff. She basically ruled Disney Channel and, in her free time, dated Aaron Carter. Teach us your ways! When she and Ren from Even Stevens finally became friends and loosened up during the gun dance thing (whatever that is), our hearts melted. Got us every time.

4. The Zenon Series

We all wanted to be Zenon. She was the total supernova girl and everything was just so “zetus lupetus.” Not to mention outfits just seemed so cool in the future. Metallic miniskirts and vests with color-coordinated scrunchies? Sign our eight-year-old selves up.

3. The Halloweentown Series

These movies definitely peaked early on, but we still can’t deny that these are a staple of Halloween time. Kalibar is still the ultimate villain and Grandma Aggie is still the ultimate bad*ss.

2. Smart House

Let’s be honest, regardless of the psycho digital woman who tries to make herself the family’s mom - which is extremely concerning and creepy - we’d still risk it to get to live in that house. Those TVs! The food! How has that house not been recreated in real life yet?

1. The High School Musical Series

Whether you hate to love it or love to hate it (or maybe are still singing “Stick the Status Quo” alone in your room), you have to admit the High School Musical series took the prepubescent world by storm. Troy Bolton may have been all of our sexual awakening.

6 Items It’s Totally Okay to Splurge On (& 4 You Never Should!)

0
0

As collegiettes on a budget, we’re always looking for ways to look super chic without breaking the bank. (Student discounts, anyone?) Even still, sometimes a collegiette fashionista has to treat herself to just a little bit of luxe. The key to savvy splurging? Spend big bucks on investment pieces you’ll keep in your closet forever. Below, we show you the investment splurges that are totally worth it—and a few that you should always pass up!

Splurge:

1. A luxe watch

A classic statement watch ($168.75 at Nordstrom) in gold or silver is a piece that will never go out of style and can dress up and add a sophisticated touch to any look!

2. A go-to carryall

A well-made tote ($295 at Zappos) or satchel big enough to hold all your daily essentials will last you ages, making it the ultimate investment piece! Look for a classic shape that'll stand the test of time and buttery leather in a neutral color like camel or black, to ensure it has ultimate staying power!

3. Leather jacket

A trusty leather jacket ($189.99 at Mango) can be worn nearly year round and is a piece that adds a bit of edge to whatever you wear it with! Style it with a striped tee and your favorite jeans for the ultimate easy uniform to throw on for those “I have nothing to wear!” days.

4. Jeans you feel great in

Few articles of clothing are as confidence-boosting as a pair of ridiculously flattering jeans ($125 at Madewell), so spending a little extra on a basic pair you can wear with everything makes it worth the splurge.

5. The perfect LBD

If you’ve ever seen Breakfast at Tiffany’s, you know the power of a LBD. Not only will the little black dress ($198 at Reformation) be a staple for years to come, but the right shape and fabric can be dressed down for day or up for night, making it one of the most versatile and wearable pieces in your closet.

6. Classic flats

While we all love our sky-high heels, sometimes our feet need a break, and that’s where the perfect pair of flats ($130 at Shopbop) comes in. Splurging on a goes-with-everything flat ensures they’ll hold up for ages and will keep you super comfy when you need a stylish stiletto alternative.

Save:

1. The season’s It-bag

Sure, we all want to look like we just stepped out of a NYFW street style photo, but splurging on this season’s latest It-bag, only to be tired of it by next season, is never a good idea. Opt for an equally trendy, cheaper lookalike bag ($29.90 at Forever 21) now instead to avoid major buyer’s regret later!

2. Trendy pieces

It’s no secret that fashion moves fast—’70s-inspired chic may be the look now, but are you really going to love that expensive suede skirt a few seasons from now? A good rule of thumb is to choose your investment pieces wisely. If you won’t wear it for more than two or three seasons, skip it and look for a cheaper alternative elsewhere. To get the trendy ’70s look for cheap, try a faux suede skirt ($46 at ASOS) instead of a real one to save your well-earned dollars on something that'll last you longer.

3. Winter or rain boots

We love a pair of rain boots or snow boots that are as chic as they are functional, but it’s probably not a great idea to invest too much in a piece that’s going to get covered in mud, salt and snow. Besides, there are plenty of super stylish options, like these ankle wellies ($36 at ASOS), that won’t break the bank!

4. Jewelry (most of the time)

While we’re all for splurging on a piece of sentimental, classic jewelry every now and then, it’s a great idea to buy the majority of your jewelry on the cheap. While jewels are a great way to dress up a look, they’re also super easy to loose—we’ve all been victims of that lost earring (or several). Buying a set of inexpensive statement jewels ($32 at ASOS) makes it NBD if anything gets lost.

Which of these fashion splurges will you be saving up for, collegiettes?

What it’s Like to Apply to Internships

0
0

Even with having to work long hours all summer, it seems like the hardest part of an internship is applying to get one in the first place. It’s the season when thousands of college students are scrambling to figure out their career paths and land the perfect summer jobs (that don’t require fetching coffee).  We all know internships pay off in the long run, but the application process can be exhausting. If you’re like most collegiettes on the internship hunt, then the following will feel far too familiar.

After putting off the internship search until winter break is over, you finally decide to check out some online postings.

It’s still early in the game, but your attempt to get ahead feels like:

Because the process is brutal and the applicant pool is competitive.

So you fight tooth and nail for a position, because you need more experience on your resume

…even if that experience is based in a different city and unpaid.

As an undergrad looking for an internship, your options are limited. You start looking at the preferred qualifications for a few positions, which are pretty daunting.

And then you look at your own resume, thinking:

So you fluff it up with bigger words and intricate details…

…and hope an interviewer won’t call you out on it.

But even with your revised resume, you still feel inadequate.

After scrolling through a dozen more openings you’re unqualified for, you enter your quarter-life crisis.

When you’re left with no choice, you submit your cover letter and resume to a few internships you’re barely qualified for. You’ve got nothing to lose, right?

And so the long wait begins as companies take their sweet time getting back to you.

It’s almost like they’re all working together to make your life as difficult as possible.

Meanwhile, it seems like your friends are getting all kinds of offers…

…and you’re still in the dark, waiting for any type of reply, like:

You’d appreciate any form of contact right now — a phone call, an email or even snail mail!

After a few weeks of no news, you’re like:

And just when you think you’re totally doomed, you get your first interview.

And your confidence goes through the roof.

It makes you wonder why you were even worried in the first place.

Then you remember how nerve-wracking interviews are…

…and how awkward you are at “selling yourself” to employers.

So you practice your interview skills with a friend.

And you research the company until you know it like the back of your hand.

When the big day arrives, you remind yourself to just act natural…

…and to show professional enthusiasm for the position.

But during the interview, if feels like the interviewer can see you sweat.

Once the interview is over, you breathe a huge sigh of relief.

Until you realize this is just the beginning of your grueling internship search.

Best of luck with your summer plans, collegiettes! You’ll be applying to full-time positions before you know it.

This Law Could Change How We Handle Sexual Assault on Campus

0
0

This year has been one filled with many issues surrounding sex on college campuses, from the former Vanderbilt students being found guilty of rape to the recent investigation of a Penn State fraternity Facebook page containing pictures of nude women broadcast without their consent. In light of recent events, California has recently passed a law that could revolutionize sex on college campuses.

The new bill, referred to as the “Yes means yes” law, makes active consent mandatory in sexual activities. Institutions of higher education who receive state funding have to therefore formally amend their codes of conduct so that all parties in sex must clearly, unambiguously, and vocally express consent. With this new law, if a student brings forward a case of rape, campus police will not longer ask whether the student said “no” or ask about the victim’s condition during the assault. The only question they will ask is whether both parties consented.

After University of California systems implemented a similar code, one that mandates active consent, UCLA reported an increase in the number of rapes reported to campus police as well as the number of students seeking help and counseling after surviving assault. This means that the law has helped to clarify what consent and assault are. In addition, making the conversation around sexual assault a more public matter could empower survivors to take advantage of campus resources and get the help they need.

Colleges are going to revitalize their orientation programs on sexual assault to implement the “yes means yes” initiative. Many colleges have also pushed for bystander intervention programs so that fighting against sexual assault and for awarness is a community effort, rather than something that is solely the responsibility of the victim.

This new law has the capacity to eradicate victim-blaming in sexual assault cases as well as make college campuses a safer place for students.

Do you think that this law will actually change how sexual assault on college campuses is handled?
