HC Wake-Up Call: Trump Has 'A Natural Instinct for Science', Melania Trump's Plane Makes Unplanned Landing & This Squirrel Won the Texas Senatorial Debate

Good morning, Her Campus! With a break-neck news cycle, there is no possible way for you to stay on top of every story that comes across your feeds—we’re all only human, after all.

But, life comes at you fast. So grab a cup of coffee and settle in for this quick and dirty guide to stories you might’ve been sleeping on (like, literally. It’s early.)

President Trump Says He Has “A Natural Instinct for Science”

Apparently when it comes to understanding science, President Donald Trump is a natural.

During an interview with The Associated Press, Trump said he has “a natural instinct for science,” expressing uncertainty about scientists’ concerns about climate change.

According to USA Today, the president told AP that there are “scientists on both sides of the issue” when asked about scientists’ warnings that climate change may be very near to the point of becoming irreversible.

“No, no. Some say that and some say differently, I mean you have scientists on both sides of it,” Trump said during the interview that published Wednesday.

“My uncle was a great professor at MIT for many years. Dr. John Trump. And I didn’t talk to him about this particular subject, but I have a natural instinct for science, and I will say that you have scientists on both sides of the picture,” Trump said.

The president told AP that climate change is cyclical, reiterating a point he made during an interview with CBS'"60 Minutes", in which the president said, “I agree the climate changes, but it goes back and forth, back and forth. So we’ll see.”

During the interview, Trump added that he is “truly an environmentalist.”

“I know some people might not think of me as that, but I’m an environmentalist,” the president said. “Everything I want and everything I have is clean. Clean is very important – water, air. But I also want jobs for our country.”

Trump said he is not willing to “sacrifice the economic well-being of our country for something that nobody really knows.”

First Lady Melania Trump’s Plane Makes Unplanned Landing After Smoke Issue

First Lady Melania Trump’s plane made an unplanned landing at Joint Base Andrews after the plane experienced a “minor mechanical issue.”

“Everything is fine, and everyone is safe,” the first lady’s spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham, said in a statement.

According to Politico, the first lady was on her way to an event at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia with Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar.

Grisham said they are “evaluating travel plans” in regards to the event.

Mrs. Trump and Azar were both on the flight.

According to a report, smoke could be seen inside the plane, and there was a burning smell. Damp washcloths were given to passengers to place over their faces to protect them from the smoke, Politico reports.

The aircraft was a Boeing C-32A called “Bright Star.”

Mrs. Trump’s plane made an unplanned landing at 9 a.m. (EST). The party boarded a second plane at 9:55 a.m.

This Blind Squirrel is the Real Winner of the Texas Senatorial Debate

In one of the nation’s most contentious Senate races, it wasn’t either candidate who was declared the winner, but rather an adorable blind squirrel.

During Tuesday night’s senatorial debate between Rep. Beto O’Rourke and Sen. Ted Cruz, the two candidates were asked share an anecdote of something non-politics related they’ve done in the last year that would provide Texans further insight into the candidates.

O’Rourke mentioned playing the drums to “rock out” with his kids, but also mentioned joining his daughter, Molly, at the wildlife center where she volunteers.

“...just went with Molly, who is nursing back to life a blind squirrel that was picked up in East Texas, dropped off in El Paso at a wildlife animal rescue run by Miss Julie. Got to meet this blind squirrel who's slowly regaining its sight,” the politician said.

ABC News located the squirrel, whose name is Tesoro, which means “treasure” in Spanish. Tesoro, or Tessie for short, came to the Stick House Sanctuary in El Paso, Texas, in June, and volunteers, including O’Rourke’s daughter, have helped to nurse the squirrel back to health.

Julie Ito Morales, the president and wildlife rehabilitator at Stick House, handles the animals, but the volunteers help to clean out empty cages, fill bird feeders and prep meals for the animals.

“They do volunteer here and they do dirty work that others wouldn’t do,” Morales said, referring to the O’Rourke family.

Tessie, who is blind, has been able to regain some of her vision, but she is still only able to see shadows. The sanctuary will be applying to make Tessie a permanent resident squirrel, who will be considered an educational squirrel and foster other squirrels, ABC News reports.

Morales said regardless of the volunteers’ political preferences, the sanctuary depends on the community’s assistance.

“I appreciate them, without them we could not do what we do,” Morales said.

What to look out for…

Since sweater weather is now upon us, it means it’s time to start sipping delicious warm beverages while snuggled up at home. Meghan Markle, who is currently on a royal tour, brought her favorite tea with her, and it turns out you can buy it online. Sip sip hooray!

Booking Trips Via Instagram Photos Is A Thing & It's All Just A Little 'Black Mirror'

If you’re always drooling over Insta-worthy vacation spots, easyJet just made it a lot, well, easier to book your travel plans. The new feature, Look&Book, relies on a screenshot of the destination to book the flight based on easyJet’s schedule.

Head of Digital Experience at easyJet, Daniel Young, said, “Look&Book will help people to further explore Europe with ease and open up new destinations and previously hidden holiday locations for a range of customers.” That means, however, that the feature is currently only limited to easyJet's European destinations.

I was skeptical, so I tried it on an Instagram post where I could verify the location. I found an Instagram post featuring a vacation destination in Europe to screenshot and downloaded the easyJet app.

I cropped out the location information and caption to really test Look&Book’s ability to recognize the image.

It took a minute for the easyJet app to review the photo, but it determined that to reach this destination, I’d have to fly into Genoa GOA. After some quick research on how to get to Portofino, the city set as the location in the post, I found that Look&Book was correct!

From there, it set me up to find a flight depending on my travel plans. Look&Book could not, however, help me find where exactly in Portofino I need to be to recreate this photo.

If I'm going to plan a vacation around an image, I want to at least be able to visit the exact location that I swooned over in the first place. This feature is solely limited to finding the airport and flight you want to take.

I didn’t actually book anything, considering it’s the middle of the semester, but even if I was realistically planning a vacation, Look&Book probably wouldn’t be my go-to option. It’s a great way to identify where a picture actually came from, but you’re limited to easyJet flights. With so many airlines to chose from, I’d rather take my time deciding. Plus, it all felt a little too Twilight Zone-esque for me.

The use of image recognition in this way seemed out of our current realm of capabilities, and if we can book our vacation plans from just a picture, I’m both scared and excited to see what technology comes next. For now, I plan to leave the vacation photos on Instagram, but if you're having trouble deducing where your acquaintance's stunning vacation actually took place, Look&Book may be able to help.

5 Fall Bucket-List Items You'll Need to Check Off This Season

Now that there's a chill in the air and that the fall season is in full effect, it’s only necessary we start talking about fall bucket list ideas. It’s safe to say that the fall is the perfect time to get out there and have fun with the people you love. You just got back from a long summer break, and you’re certainly ready to make some good memories with your friends. Here are a few of the most essential fall bucket-list items you'll want to accomplish this season.

1. Drive-in movie

7 Fall Bucket List Ideas For College Students at the Honey ScoopThis past fall I went to see the movie "It" at a drive-in movie with my besties. And though it was a sub-par movie, it was so fun to pile up in a pickup truck, cuddle in some blankets and unhealthy food, and have a good scare. It was especially fun to watch a scary movie, because fall is the perfect season for some good ole thrills.

2. Dress up for a Halloween party

7 Fall Bucket List Ideas For College Students at the Honey ScoopLast year my friends and I were the Cheetah Girls, which was quite an adventure. We had a great time getting creative and all teaming up on a costume together. I recommend grabbing some friends and brainstorming something you all can a lot of fun with. Think the Wizard of Oz cast, The Powerpuff Girls, the Spice Girls...don't be afraid to get creative with what group you pick!

3. Go to a farm

Enjoy all the cliché fall festivities by visiting a nearby farm that offers all the fun fall experiences. Caramel apples, truck rides, some animal feeding, the corn maze — the list of bucket-list-worthy items goes on.

4. Carve pumpkins

This is not something you graduate from once you leave home – you can take it with you to college. If you go to a farm, pick up your favorite pumpkin out of the selection and make something of it. I always go on Pinterest and look up some artsy ideas (although I never go all out because my artistic talents just aren’t there). Bonus points if you bake the pumpkin seeds, because these are a little slice of heaven.

5. Go to a haunted house

Get a group together and drive to a sketchy haunted house. I have plans to go to one this fall and I’m a bit terrified. I will make sure I always know where the exit signs are in that place. But still, it’s a fun bonding experience with the people you love and most definitely a must during fall.

There are an endless amount of things to do in the fall. Grab your planners and write some events down so you don’t just have a bucket list without implementation. Those traditions don’t need to stay home with your family, you can bring them to college and enjoy them with your besties. Take advantage of this wonderful season of joy and beauty, and make it count.

Lady Gaga Wore an Oversized Men's Suit to the Elle Women in Hollywood Awards for an Empowering Reason

Celebrities have the power to influence style choices as well as social movements. Lady Gaga has been making headlines for years, but most recently sparked conversation through her empowering fashion choices during Elle’s Women in Hollywood Awards. Instead of opting for her usual out-of-the-box, glamorous fashion choices with glitter and themes, she chose to wear an oversized men’s suit and a sleek, low-bun. This outfit represented much more than just a simple choice. After being presented with a Women in Hollywood Award, Gaga opened up in her speech about the pressure on women in Hollywood and elaborated on experiences she has had with sexual assault, PTSD, and more. In an inspiring, tearful speech at the awards show, Gaga claimed she was taking the power back, not just for herself, but for women everywhere.

"I asked myself: What does it really mean to be a woman in Hollywood? We are not just objects to entertain the world. We are not simply images to bring smiles or grimaces to people’s faces. We are not members of a giant beauty pageant meant to be pit against one another for the pleasure of the public. We women in Hollywood, we are voices. We have deep thoughts and ideas and beliefs and values about the world and we have the power to speak and be heard and fight back when we are silenced." Link in bio for #ELLEWIH honoree @LadyGaga's speech, which brought the entire room to tears, while also inspiring everyone who heard it to own their power and be kind to one another. ❤ #ladygaga

A post shared by Elle Magazine (@elleusa) on

Women face oppression in many forms, and by using her platform to inspire a societal shift, Gaga draws light to that oppression and helps steer the conversation in the right direction. Her speech covered sexual assault, mental health, and what it means to be a woman in today’s society. However, her speech branches beyond what she said. She sparked a conversation about how we can change for the better in the future, and what we need to do right now to provoke that change. Acknowledging that she has a platform and a voice for major influence, Gaga isn’t afraid to be bold both in her fashion choices and in her brave, public outcries for change. We're proud of her for being so vulnerable, open, and authentic and hope that her boldness can help shape positive change for women everywhere.

4 Jobs You Can Do From the Comfort of Your Own Home

I love the internet. Honestly. Aside from the fact I can look up any question I have and find the answer, the Internet has made it possible for anyone to broaden their career horizons. There are so many different paths we can take and so many business ideas that we can start up in the comfort of our own homes.

Let's face it — the world is definitely moving towards a more entrepreneurial mindset, where people are making their own schedules and not sticking to the normal 9-to-5 shift. They work when their company demands it, not because a schedule does. By working from home you are able to work wherever you like, giving you a more flexible work environment and agenda. Here are a few jobs that you can do while sitting in your favorite pair of pajamas:

Virtual assistant

If your organized, self-motivated, and don't mind busy work, I think becoming a virtual assistant could be a very promising position. They typically handle any number of small tasks for a particular person or business. Tasks include blogging, scheduling, data entry, and answering emails. You never know where this path could take you since it would be a remote job. You could be scheduling flights for a small business in the UK or entering data for a start-up. Good news is that anyone can become a virtual assistant!

Copywriting

If you have a degree in communication, English, marketing, or advertising, copywriting might be the (new) job for you. Copywriting is the ultimate working-from-home career for anyone that can write to a good standard. Typically you would put together promotional content for companies, like direct mailings, commercials, newsletters, and websites. There are also other forms of writing you can go for, such as grant writing or informative posting. If puzzles are your forte, copywriting allows you to take all of your pieces of content and put them into one big promotional content piece, from home or a coffee shop, or even on the road.

Bookkeeping

If you have any sort of accounting background and want to earn cash from home, you should really look into bookkeeping. There are a lot of small companies, local organizations, or even individuals that need bookkeepers. You do not necessarily need to be a certified accountant in order to go down this route either. A lot of small business owners are looking for freelancer bookkeepers because they cannot afford to hire someone on a full-time basis. If you're good with numbers and can keep financials organized this might be a decent outlook for you.

Graphic design

Graphic design is something that can easily be carried out from the comfort of your own home.  A degree is not required, but some sort of qualification is as this will take a major creative eye and skill in the technology business. Companies are always going to need graphic designers to assist them with conveying information in a visual manner through the likes of websites, posters, advertisements, and logos. It is easier for them to hire someone on retainer than to outsource to a company. Some quick cash can easily be made here.

Hopefully, one of these businesses ideas resonates with you if you're serious about changing up your career life or even utilizing some free time. Nevertheless, if you are still searching for the perfect home-based business idea, don’t stop! There are so many other options. The sky is the limit. It is time for you to reach for the stars and secure the career of your dreams from the comfort of your footie-pajamas.

'Riverdale' Season 3, Episode 2: What Is Up With The Creepy Monster & Other Questions I Have

0
0

If you aren’t watching Riverdale, drop everything, watch the first two seasons and get caught up immediately. The previous two seasons of Riverdale have delivered plenty of scares, laughs and dramatic moments, but this third season of Riverdale is shaping up to be the best yet.

Spoilers for Riverdale S3 E2 to follow. Proceed at your own risk.

Two episodes in, we’ve already seen Archie get locked up, a few characters die (RIP Dilton and Ben), some strong supernatural events and a secret society of Riverdale parents emerge—which leaves me with many questions.

1. What is up with this creepy “Gargoyle King” monster?

In last week’s season premiere, we were introduced to the new…villain?... of this season—the Gargoyle King. Dilton was killed in a ritualistic encounter with this being, and Ben, another scout, was gravely injured, and eventually took his own life. This week, Betty and Jughead were on the case, and it seemed that Dilton, Ben and Ethel had simply been caught up in a role-playing game. But if this Gargoyle King is simply part of a game, why did Betty and Jughead see it in the woods? This ambiguity makes it hard to tell if the Gargoyle King is a supernatural being, or just a Riverdale resident in costume getting an early start on Halloween. Previous seasons of Riverdale have often relied on real-life, albeit slightly exaggerated threats, like the Blossom/Cooper feud and The Black Hood, so this possible turn towards the supernatural is unexpected, but exciting.

2. What is up with these seizures?

We learned this week that Betty’s sudden collapse at the end of S3 E1 was the result of a seizure. This seems reasonable, as Betty has been under a lot of stress. But towards the end of the episode, Ethel also suffers a seizure, which begs the question—are these seizures connected? And if so, what is the common link? A bad batch of Jingle Jangle doesn’t seem likely. Is it something in the water? Or has a sinister spell been cast over Riverdale?

3. Was a prison pep rally really the best idea?

I love that Veronica wants to stand by Archie as he serves his time. And I love that Archie wants to promote comradery in the juvenile detention system. But, given the outcome, was this really a smart idea? Archie’s football game quickly goes downhill, resulting in a riot, and the death of his cellmate Mad Dog. Even though Archie lost his ally and now feels immeasurable guilt about Mad Dog’s death, one good thing came out of this fiasco—the “Jailhouse Rock” musical number. Just like the musical episode of season two, this made absolutely no sense in the broad context of the show, but I LOVED IT!!!!!!

4. What is the “new Mad Dog?”

As Archie is feeling guilty in the final moments of the episode, the warden (supervisor? I don’t know what you would call him) tells Archie that he’s “the new Mad Dog.” But what does this mean? Archie’s going to be sitting in a cell, brooding and issuing ominous warnings to new people? In a clip from next week’s episode, we saw what appears to be Archie near a boxing ring. Is he going to be overseeing some sort of juvie fight club? Or, given his athletic prowess, is he going to become a gym teacher? Only time will tell!

5. Why are all of the Riverdale parents meeting and what did they do?

When groups of Riverdale parents and adults get together, it’s never good. So, at the end of the episode when Fred Andrews, Alice Cooper, Hermione Lodge and company are meeting (in a very shadowy room), it definitely brought up more questions than answers. Phrases like we are “never revisiting that night” are thrown around, as well as potential references to the Gargoyle King. Is the Gargoyle King some spiritual being that was summoned a generation ago and is back for vengeance? Did the Riverdale ‘rents do something bad in their youth, which has caused all of the craziness in Riverdale? Or is this another tie-in with The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina? (I’m not letting this theory go). Either way, a cliffhanger like this will definitely ensure that I will not miss a single episode this season.

I also had some less serious questions, such as…

1. Are Polly’s twins *actually* named Dagwood and Juniper?

2. Is the coroner actually a coroner? Because he looks like a teenager. And should he be letting Jughead take pictures in the morgue?

3. How does Veronica have time to go to school, devote herself to Archie AND run a business? Does she have a time-turner?

4. And how was Veronica able to visit Archie in disguise? Did the guards *really* think she was someone else? Cause I saw right through that wig.

5. Is Kevin really joining the RROTC for Moose? Because he deserves so much better than Moose. Kevin’s a true romantic, and he’s quickly becoming my favorite character.

6. And finally, is it normal for cheerleaders to have pompoms on their sneakers? I don’t know much about cheerleading, but I think decorations on sneakers would be quite cumbersome when doing tricks and stunts. If someone could answer this question for me, I would eternally grateful.

Riverdale airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. on The CW.

‘Orange Is The New Black’ Is Ending After 7 Seasons & It's A Sad Day For Everyone

It's a sad day for Orange Is The New Black fans: Netflix has announced that the hit show will finish after its upcoming seventh season.

The cast took to the show's official Twitter to share the news, relaying their memories over the past seven years, thanking fans for being a part of the ride and promising that season seven will be unforgettable.

“During production of Season 1, everyone involved with Orange Is The New Black felt like we knew a special secret we couldn’t wait to share with the world. Since then, we have laughed, cried, raged, and roared with the women of Litchfield, and every moment spent with them felt like borrowed time — too good to last forever," said Vice President of Original Content for Netflix Cindy Holland in a statement, according to Deadline. "We will be sad to say goodbye but we will definitely be going out on a high. We are grateful to Jenji Kohan and her groundbreaking vision, to her supremely talented team of writers and producers, and to a once-in-a-lifetime cast and crew for creating a truly special work of art that has inspired conversations and connected audiences around the world.”

Orange Is The New Black revolves around Piper Chapman, who's living her best life when her past suddenly catches up to her, and is sentenced to spend time in a minimum-security women's prison in Connecticut for her association with a drug runner a decade earlier. The series is based on the 2010 memoir, Orange Is The New Black: My Year In A Women's Prison, written by Piper Kerman.

The final episodes of Orange Is The New Black are expected to air in the summer of 2019.

What to Do When You're Not Feeling Super Motivated About the Job Hunt

0
0

We've all been there. You've submitted a dozen applications, sent countless "connect" invites on LinkedIn and gone to the umpteenth networking event, all without getting a single hit. The job or internship hunt can be wildly frustrating, especially when you feel like you're getting absolutely nowhere. If you're feeling drained and need a career pick-me-up, look no further for ways to motivate yourself during that ever-important hunt.

1. Be systematic

Firstly, it's important to know what your goals are. If you're planning on applying to a dozen positions, you need to be able to keep track of what tasks you have and haven't already taken care of. I personally love writing down all my memos and to-do lists in my planner; it's such a beautiful feeling to be able to physically scratch off the things on your list as you complete them. Plus, it cuts down on those panicked, "Wait, what was that I needed to submit today?" thoughts you wake up to at 3 a.m.

Have a hard time settling down to actually churn out work? Ellie Rifkin, a senior at Davidson College, says hosting "application parties" are a great way to get some much-needed friend time in while still being productive. Try having your besties over for hot chocolate and job hunting – you can even make it a friendly competition to see who sends in the most applications!

2. Find a friend or mentor to help

It's never good to go at it alone. Try reaching out to people you know who can offer fresh perspectives and advice. "One of my close friends and I usually get together when we need to apply for new jobs/internships to act each other's 'editor' to make sure our resumes and cover letters are the best they can be. Working with a friend, or someone who's familiar with your employment history is a great way to keep you from submitting your application material prematurely. Plus, I feel like you're generally more motivated when you know your friend(s) is applying for jobs too," Chelsea Jackson, a junior at Iowa State University, says.

Don't forget to utilize your college or university's career center! Chelsea sums it up nicely, "Typically, everyone in your career services office knows how to cater your application material to your dream job (or internship). I feel like getting that kind of expert advice is bound to make even the least motivated [student] more motivated and confident when they're searching."

3. Don't compare yourself to others

Siena College senior Kristen Perrone suggests "checking in with your friends because chances are that a couple months out of college, not many people will have that full-time gig yet." She says that the job market will vary depending on where you live, so it's best not to compare yourself to someone you know in college who easily lined up a job back in their hometown. "Talking with people who are facing the same amount of competition and options as me is comforting because I know it's not just me struggling. Basic point: location matters, so don't get too affected by college friends or classmates who may be from a different area and are facing different work opportunities!"

Also, the S.T.E.M. job climate is going to look much different than the education market, for instance. Just because all of your bio major friends have already found jobs doesn't mean you, as an English major, are doing something wrong. Focus on yourself, and don't let self-destructive thoughts discourage you.

4. Seek inspiration

You know those Facebook videos telling the stories of how people like Oprah and J.K. Rowling went from rock bottom to major success? It may sound cheesy, but reminding yourself that even the big names had rough patches to overcome can make you feel so much better about your own situation. Lisa Kudrow gave an excellent commencement speech a few years ago detailing her rocky start as an actress that eventually led to her being cast as Phoebe on Friends – one day this could be you!

5. Keep a positive attitude

Lastly, when you're super tired and just ready to throw in the towel, remember that all the hard work you're putting in now will be worth it in the future. "There's always a light at the end of the tunnel," says Katie Gomulkiewicz, an alumna of Davidson College.

Yes, the job search can be unpleasant, and sometimes even scary, but an optimistic perspective can go a long way in making it a more bearable time for yourself. Keep at it, and before long your search will be over!

3 Reasons to Be Shameless About Your Sexual Health

0
0

From a young age, women are taught to feel shame for (gasp) being sexually active – and that feeling carries over to sexual health as well, potentially affecting our sexual and reproductive health. But when you avoid the doctor, a lot of crucial aspects pertaining to sexual health aren’t checked in on: dryness, sexually transmitted diseases, medical history and so on. Also significant is the lack of discussion about birth control, and especially emergency contraception.

It makes you curious – what are women doing when their birth control methods fail or they have unprotected sex? Education is empowerment. We need to raise greater awareness and erase the stigma around every available option, including emergency contraception, to be more confident about our bodies.

For over 40 years, Vagisil has been the brand women trust for solutions to the vaginal health issues that affect them most, so we’ve partnered up with this girl-boss team to make sure women always feel empowered. In the case of emergency contraception, we hope women can be prepared, not panicked. But, being shameless about emergency contraception and being informed go hand-in-hand, so we’re here to give you the info you need to empower yourself.

1. 1-in-2 women may need to use emergency contraception.

Yep, you read that right. Half of all women may need to prepare for the possibility of an unexpected pregnancy at some point in their lives. If that’s the case, why aren’t we talking about emergency contraceptive left and right?

Knowing this statistic, Vagisil launched Preventeza, a one tablet, one dose emergency contraceptive that prevents pregnancy before it starts. It uses the same ingredient as many birth control pills, just at a higher dose. You should use as directed within 72 hours of unprotected sex or birth control failure to help prevent pregnancy before it starts.

2. There’s no shame in what you’ve got.

Vaginal health is normal, it’s natural – and you have every right to take care of your body, without shame. If we can’t talk about vaginal health, we can’t take care of it. Ladies, it’s 2018, so wear your vagina proudly, please.

3. Being prepared is powerful.

Sex shouldn’t be taboo, and neither should preparing you or your friends for that moment when you think there’s a chance you could get pregnant after unprotected sex or birth control failure. TBH, we’ve been there, and you’re not alone. That’s why we ladies need to stick together. Luckily, when you buy Preventeza (available at Preventeza.com) you’ll get a second one free to keep for yourself or give to a friend. This is a community of women inspiring women, and it’s totally health goals.

Ready to join this shameless conversation? Show your solidarity with women being in control of their reproductive health by using #WeAre1in2 on social media! And don’t forget to learn more about Preventeza™ and emergency contraception, so that you can feel empowered to take control.

'A Star Is Born': Bradley Cooper & Lady Gaga’s First Interaction, Meet Cute or Meet Creepy

A Star is Born has been winning at the box office since it opened a couple of weeks ago. And in addition to winning the box office, the film’s soundtrack is #1 on the Billboard charts and fans have been discussing memorable moments from the film on social media. One moment that stuck out to me was when Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga’s characters first meet.

Mild spoilers to follow…

Jackson (Cooper) stumbles into a bar where he watches Ally (Gaga) perform. Jackson is instantly smitten and woos her with his charm, asking if he can peel off her electrical tape eyebrow (yes, this is an actual moment in the film).

What follows is a bar fight, an eventful trip to a grocery store and a stunning acapella performance from Lady Gaga in a parking lot. This is all cute, but what really caught my attention was the next morning when Jackson drops Ally off at her home and utters one line: “I just wanna take another look at you.”

Simply reading this line doesn’t do it justice, so please skip to 1:12 in the trailer below, to hear Bradley Cooper growl it out.

It’s creepy, right?

Well, not to everyone.

Let’s flashback to June 2018: I was seeing Ocean’s 8 with my mom when the trailer for A Star is Born came on. Immediately after hearing that line, I turned to her and said, “That’s creepy!” My mom, however, thought it was romantic.

Wanting to prove that I was right, I reached out to my former roommate who I’ll call Friend A. She definitely agreed with me that the line was creepy.

Not satisfied with just one person agreeing with me, I decided to conduct an informal poll (read: I texted three of my friends), to see if they would also validate my (correct) opinion of the interaction.

Friend B had seen the trailer and watched it again for the purpose of this poll. Her opinion was that she “wouldn’t say it was totally adorable, but she also didn’t feel totally creeped out,” which lead her to conclude that it was more on the cute side.

Friend C didn’t really remember the trailer, but when I texted her the quote out of context, she felt that it was creepy and “stalkerish.”

Wanting to maintain a majority opinion that I was right, I texted Friend D, who didn’t feel that the line was creepy in the context of the film, but felt that overall, Bradley Cooper’s character was a creepy man.

Friend D brought up a good point: when you see the whole movie, does their first interaction go from a meet creepy to a meet cute? I reached out to Friend A again, who had seen the film with me, and she felt that the line was still creepy.

However, after seeing this movie, I can see Friend D’s point. The highlight of Jack and Ally’s relationship is the beginning when it’s just them in love, without any of the serious issues they eventually face in the film. And when Bradley Cooper growls this line while hanging out of a car window it’s definitely creepy. But when you factor in the way he once again says the line during his final moments with Ally, it becomes poignant, and serves as a (slightly) romantic and emotional way to bookend the film.

With no real consensus reached, I still firmly believe that the “I just wanna take another look at you,” is creepy AF, even if it makes sense in the movie.

A Star is Born is in theaters now.

'Manifest': Ben Finally Meets Danny, Saanvi & Michaela are Seeing Weeping Angels & There Was a Stowaway on Flight 828

This week's episode of Manifest amped up the drama big time without creating any huge questions for the viewers. Instead, family and personal relationships were the focus of the episode, though there were still mysteries to be had. Here's a general overview of everything that happened in the episode and how it made us feel.

The episode began by following flight attendant Bethany in a flashback to Flight 828's return to New York. After hearing that the flight was going to be diverted, Bethany grabbed a bag from one of the overhead bins and suspiciously hid something from it. Clearly, she was going to be the fellow passenger the gang helped out in this week's episode, though what she was hiding was not revealed immediately.

Back to the main timeline, Saanvi is working at the hospital when she sees wet footprints and a gray lady that looks exactly like a Weeping Angel from Doctor Who—but both images disappear when she looks away. Thinking she is hallucinating, she decides to get an MRI and take the results to a neuroscientist who also works at the hospital (isn't it great to have unlimited access to all the medical equipment and expertise you want?). Pretending the brain she's asking about is a patient's and not her own, she learns the scan looks like that of a homeless patient who they believe is developing schizophrenia. This understandably worries Saanvi.

As she leaves the doctor's office, Saanvi sees wet footprints again. She decides to follow them and ends up coming across the schizophrenic John Doe residing in room 810, not 828 surprisingly, who begs her to find Bethany as he is being hauled away by nurses. Feeling shaken, Saanvi calls Ben and they meet to discuss what is going on.

Ben and Saanvi's friendship is one of the purest things on Manifest. It is so nice to see Ben opening up to someone in a way he feels he cannot with his wife or sister. Neither judges each other for the actions they are taking to understand what they have each gone through. In this case, Ben is able to reassure Saanvi that she isn't going crazy and gives her Bethany's phone number (he's building a database of all the passengers on Flight 828, which isn't at all creepy).

In his own life, Ben is having trouble relating to his 15-year-old daughter Olive, calling her romper a pair of overalls and otherwise failing to bond. It's obvious Ben is trying his best to be a father to her, but when all he can remember his the sweet 10-year-old he left behind, things are sure to go poorly. Ben and Olive finally get their chance to bond after Olive is caught shoplifting from a makeup store. This bonding session is not without its own drama, however.

When Ben goes to pick up Olive from her shoplifting incident, he finally meets Danny, Grace's ex-lover, face to face. It's clearly an awkward moment and a painful one for Ben as he realizes Olive trusts Danny more than she does him. Luckily, Ben is able to repair his relationship with his daughter by repeating one of his own stories about growing up—a story of how he stole a boomerang (why a boomerang, you ask? Besides his statement that he thought it was cool, we may never know). He is able to relate with Olive about why they both chose to shoplift; it was a way for them to get some control in their life. Ben also talks about how his mother told him that "everybody deserves one free pass," and that Ben was giving this to Olive, though he doesn't feel she deserves it. After this story, Olive opens up about how she feels she didn't want to break Ben's illusions about who she really was as a person. But Ben doesn't care, he loves his daughter even if she seems like a new person as compared to the child he left behind five-and-a-half years ago. The bonding session ends with Olive asking Ben not to tell Grace about the incident, because she doesn't want to worry her mom more.

Ben's reaction to Olive's shoplifting really was the ultimate parenting move. Instead of getting angry and taking out all his frustration about the mysteries of Flight 828 and Grace's relationship with Danny, Ben treated Olive like an adult and gave her the chance to fix things on her own. He understands that she is just trying to navigate through a tough time in her life, being a teenager and dealing with the return of her father and brother after so many years.
Ben and Grace's relationship is also not without its share of drama. During the episode, Grace gets a letter informing her that she needs to pay back all of Ben's life insurance, an amount close to $500K. Ben manages to come up with a solution (take out a few loans and slowly pay all the money back) and semi-repairs his romantic connection to Grace, though Danny is still a barrier between them.

During all of this, Michaela is assigned to stakeout with Jared, which leads the two of them to reminisce about their old relationship. The comfort level between them crashes and burns after Michaela realizes Jared asked to be assigned to her and it wasn't an accident. Things don't get any better after Michaela sees a Weeping Angel figure, just like Saanvi, who tells her to "save him." The lack of specifics causes Michaela to think she needs to save the undercover agent they are keeping track of in the stakeout. Jared listens to her and they end up botching the whole operation, leaving Jared suspended. He takes the fall for Michaela, even though she doesn't want him to, and asks that Michaela talk to someone about what is going on.

Michaela talks to Ben, who directs her to Saanvi, who is currently working with Bethany to free the John Doe. We finally find out his name is Thomas, Bethany's cousin's boyfriend whom she smuggled onto the plane because his life was in danger in Jamaica due to being gay. Unfortunately, Thomas disappears from the hospital, tripping alarms and giving Saanvi and Bethany just enough time to escape with Michaela, who just happens to drive up at the perfect time, while the NSA close-in. No one has any idea where Thomas might be until Saanvi and Michaela discuss the gray woman they had both seen. By putting together the clues (wet footprints and wings), Bethany realized it must be the Angel of the Waters on Bethesda Fountain, located in Central Park. Indeed, Thomas is there, and the three women rescue him and tell him it really has been five-and-a-half years and that his boyfriend, Bethany's cousin, wasn't coming—he had disappeared while they were gone. They realize they need to hide Thomas from the NSA and so Michaela finds an abandoned safe house where he can stay.

The episode ends by switching through all of the main characters' viewpoints. Grace decides to text Danny a thank you message, possibly opening up a future dialogue between the two. Saanvi is still looking at the brain scans, worried about what they might mean for the other passengers and herself. Jared is working overtime trying to figure out what is going on in Michaela's life and whether he can trust what she tells him. Finally, Michaela herself returns to the Bethesda Fountain to ask what the angel wants from her.

This was a jam-packed episode that changed the relationships between many characters: Ben and Olive connected as father and daughter, Michaela and Saanvi got to know each other through helping Bethany and Thomas, and Michaela and Jared's and Grace and Ben's relationships became more strained. The introduction of the visions, rather than just voices, also amped up the stakes. Hopefully, all of these relationship continue to grow, hopefully more positively than negatively, in the coming episodes and we're looking forward to see which new passenger we meet next week.

Ian Somerhalder Posted a Throwback Photo From the Set of 'The Vampire Diaries'& Paul Wesley's Response Is Everything

Ian Somerhalder posted a major throwback from his days on The Vampire Diaries on his Instagram on Wednesday.

In a photo taken on the set of season one, alongside his former co-star Paul Wesley, the dreamy actor reminisced in the caption about a moment that now feels like it was ages ago. "Wow... just came across this. Damon and Stefan: Vampire Diaries Season 1 Episode 2 with @paulvedere and getting direction from the amazing @msiega. Love and miss these guys."

With numerous comments gushing over how sweet the photo is, Paul Wesley himself had the cutest response in return.

The actors remembered the exact day in the photo, and it's comforting to see that they're both still friends who have fond memories together.

Hopefully one day we can get a Salvatore brothers reunion but for now, both actors are busy with their own separate projects.

Kendall Jenner Claps Back at TMZ for Adding to Her Stalker Problem

After a man was arrested for trespassing on her property, Kendall Jenner fired back at TMZ for releasing her “exact address” and “putting her life in danger.”

John Ford, 37, was arrested on Tuesday and held at $30,000 bail, according to Los Angeles Police. Ford was previously arrested at the same property and convicted of trespassing back in July. He was order by a judge to stay away from the property and Jenner, USA Today reports.

Jenner tweeted at TMZ in response to a video narrated by Harvey Levin, who is the sites founder, that showed her home from the street. The video continued to go into detail on how Ford used a certain path to enter Jenner’s property.

“And how do you guys think these terrifying people know where my house is? Cuz you release not only photos but my location. It is so beyond unsafe. Is this not our one ounce of privacy we can get???” she tweeted.

She continued in a second tweet: “I understand what i’ve signed up for but when you release the exact location to where i live THAT is when you’re putting my life in danger.”

“Your home is your safe haven, but for me, cuz of outlets like you, my home is anything BUT. you should be ashamed of yourself,” Jenner tweeted.

A TMZ spokesperson responded with, “we reported on a public criminal case that has been filed against this individual, we never reported on her location,” according to BuzzFeed News.

While the video doesn’t mention Jenner’s exact address, it does describe her neighborhood as “a beautiful gated community with multimillion-dollar homes.”

This is unfortunately not the first time Jenner has had to deal with a trespasser or stalker. In 2016, she testified in a case against a man who stood in her driveway and followed her into the house. He was charged with trespassing, and the case went to trial. According to ENews, the jury acquitted the man, but Jenner was later granted a permanent restraining order against him.

Trump Threatens to Cut Foreign Aid Over the Migrant Caravan Headed For The US

It seemed like the president’s mounting frustration boiled over this morning. In a series of tweets on Thursday, Trump threatened to call the military to guard the southern border, to cut off aid to Central America nations, and to end the recent trade deal with Mexico over the caravan of migrants from Honduras that’s currently heading to the United States southern borders.

Trump started his tweet by claiming the Democrats of “leading” the caravan. “I am watching the Democratic Party led (because they want Open Borders and existing weak laws) assault on our country by Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, whose leaders are doing little to stop this large flow of people, INCLUDING MANY CRIMINALS, from entering Mexico to U.S.,” Trump tweeted this morning. Of course, it has nothing to do with the Democratic Party.

“In addition to stopping all payments to these countries, which seem to have almost no control over their population, I must, in the strongest of terms, ask Mexico to stop this onslaught,” Trump tweeted. “And if unable to do so I will call up the U.S. Military and CLOSE OUR SOUTHERN BORDER!”

“The assault on our country at our Southern Border, including the Criminal elements and DRUGS pouring in, is far more important to me, as President, than Trade or the USMCA,” the president wrote in one last tweet. “Hopefully Mexico will stop this onslaught at their Northern Border. All Democrats fault for weak laws!”

Trump recently signed the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement or USMCA, and it was a new trade deal to replace NAFTA, according to Vox. It basically changed policies on labor and environmental standards, intellectual property protections, and digital trade provisions.

The migrant caravan has as many as 4,000 people traveling together. The group left Honduras and crossed Guatemala’s borders on Monday, with the hopes of reaching the US. They won’t reach Mexico for several more weeks, and it is likely that they will be apprehended before that.

Earlier this week, Trump threatened to cut off aid to Honduras if the caravan wasn’t stopped. According to NBC News, the Mexican government announced before the president’s twitter rant that the people who entered Mexico illegally would be “rescued” and deported. Caravan members could ask for asylum in Mexico, but they would be detained up to 90 days.

This is also not the first time Trump has blamed the Democrats and made threats to stop aid payments to Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador unless those countries do something to stop their citizens from leaving. According to The Washington Post, Border Patrol has arrested a record number of undocumented migrants at the southern border, and those numbers continue to rise in October, despite Trump’s threats.

Kristen Bell Uses ‘Snow White’ To Teach Her Daughters About Consent & Like Yes

Kristen Bell may play a Disney princess in “Frozen,” but she still worries that some of the princesses teach her daughters the wrong lessons.

The mother of two revealed in an interview with Parents magazine that she’s concerned with some of Snow White’s storyline and that she uses it to teach her daughters important lessons such as consent.

“Every time we close Snow White I look at my girls and ask, ‘Don’t you think it’s weird that Snow White didn’t ask the old witch why she needed to eat the apple? Or where she got that apple?” Bell said to the publication. “I say, ‘I would never take food from a stranger would you?’ And my kids are like, ‘No!’ And I’m like, ‘Okay, I’m doing something right,” she said.

Bell also asked her kids about Snow White’s famous kissing scene.

“Don’t you think that it’s weird that the prince kisses Snow White without her permission? Because you can not kiss someone if they’re sleeping!” she asked.

The quotes received some backlash, which Bell called them “annoying and misplaced.” She explained in a response to a follower that she was just advocating for her daughters to “process critical thinking.”

Bell also tweeted according to ENews, “actually, everything IS a message to our children, because they are sponges that soak up everything and are learning how to be adults through what they see. I want my girls to see and practice critical thinking and respectful behavior.”

One person on Twitter even accused Bell of being a “hypocrite” for “cashing” her “huge check” to play a Disney princess. In a perfect clap back, Bell said: “It’s cute that you guys are making jokes about something that I feel is very important. I’d be happy to send you copies and snow white and frozen, and you can see the differences. How far the example set for women has come. It might enlighten your point of view.”

Honestly, snaps for Kristen Bell for having an open and honest conversation about consent with her kids.

How to Build a Quality Wardrobe from Stores like Forever 21 & H&M

0
0

We’ve all probably spent our fair share of money at cheaper retailers. It’s just so hard to resist when you’re perusing Forever 21 or Target and everything seems to be within your budget. But then those ripped jeans you got for a steal rip in the wrong kinds of places and you’re not so shocked that the price was so low. You can still create a quality wardrobe with some pieces from these budget-friendly stores; you just have to know how to shop.

1. Stock up on going-out tops

Let’s be real — there is no need to spend excessive amounts of money on a name-brand crop top for going out. First of all, they’re normally tiny, i.e. not enough fabric to be worth that much moolah. Second, if you live in a normal college town, chances are by the end of the semester that shirt will have seen too much beer spillage and drunk late-night pizza stains to be considered “nice” by any means. For those slinky little tops, stick with stores like H&M and Forever 21, where you can buy them without worrying about the party hazards that are sure to ensue.

Forever 21 Ribbed Surplice Crop Top, $15.00

H&M V-neck Camisole Top with Lace, $17.99

2. Look for layering pieces

Layering never seems to go out of style. It’s cute and keeps us warm, but the outfits seem to involve like, ten pieces so it can be expensive. Normally, a well-layered ensemble involves one or two main statement pieces, like a cute oversized cardigan or an edgy leather jacket. Under these elements, though, you have to (or at least should) wear something else. For t-shirts, tanks and bralettes that form the base layer of your ensemble, look at places like H&M, Target and Express. You’re barely going to see them after piling on the layers, so no worries getting some basics on the cheap.

Target A New Day Tank, $8

Express One Eleven Lightly Lined Seamless Bralette, $19.90

3. Shop around for starter business wear staples

If I’m looking for a job or working an unpaid internship, what makes you think I can afford to buy a high-end work outfit? With blazers and pants, sometimes getting something personally tailored or higher-end might pay off, but as a millennial entering the workforce, you might not have the 200+ bucks it takes to buy a work outfit at Banana Republic or a department store. Express offers an incredible selection of work wear basics for way less, especially if you watch the sales. You can create a head-to-toe look there, or just buy the pieces that fit you well. With the money you save, you can buy a pair of biz heels that don’t make you want to scream in pain.

Express High Waisted Tweed Pencil Skirt, $69.90

Express Slim Fit Long Sleeve Essential Shirt, $39.90

4. Buy oversized tops for what they’re worth

The oversize trend has really been taking off lately, which is fine by me because now when I’m bloated, no one’s the wiser. But honestly, if you’re spending insane amounts of money on huge t-shirts and hoodies, you should check yourself. Check yourself again if you’re buying tees or sweatshirts with holes in them for excessive amounts of cash too. I mean, if you’ve got the funds, great—Urban Outfitters appreciates your business. But if you’re really just trying to be comfy and embrace this trend while you can, Etsy has great vintage pieces for low prices and of course Forever 21 has an overwhelming amount of options, even some with those *trendy* holes. UNIQLO also has a sick artist series and the Target men’s section has a lot to offer too.

Printed Hooded Sweatshirt, $17.99

UNIQLO SPRZ NY Poetry Graphic T-Shirt, $14.90

5. Find your way to the Target shoe aisle

I used to work at Target, and literally all of the trendy shoes are nearly identical to more expensive Steve Madden pairs. Me and my coworkers used to theorize that Target hired the same designer or something, because it’s uncanny. That being said, for shoes that you’re not planning on wearing the sh** out of, Target’s will do just fine. They look like they’re designer for a fraction of the price and give you a reason to go to Target (not that we ever really need one).

Target Women's Julisa Slide Sandals with a Bow, $22.99

Target Mossimo Reese Nylon Slip On Sneakers, $24.99

6. Buy all the simple dresses you want

For special occasions, spending the extra money will be worth it. But for summer dresses, simple t-shirt silhouettes or plain dresses for under jackets or sweaters you can probably find a perfectly suitable version at H&M, Express, GAP or Target.

H&M T-shirt Dress, $14.99

Forever 21 Open-Shoulder Sweater Dress, $15.90

7. Accessorize without worry

Spending a lot of money on small pieces of jewelry or accessories just seems nonsensical to me. I highly doubt that a high-end designer plaid scarf and a plaid scarf from Target are all that different, especially to other people. And as far as jewelry you only wear once a month, what’s the point in making sure its 24K gold? The exception would probably be handbags, which are an investment in your well-being honestly, or earrings, because I’ll pay good money so that my ears don’t itch.

Forever 21 Layered Chain Necklace, $6.90

H&M Woven Scarf, $17.99

Maybe your whole wardrobe shouldn’t be made up of steals and deals from lower-cost stores, but with a college budget your whole wardrobe certainly can’t be all killer designer pieces either. Forever 21 and H&M have their time and place, and if you shop there wisely, you can have a wardrobe full of great options without having to take out a student loan.

HC Wake-Up Call: John Bolton, John Kelly Have Intense Screaming Match, US Justice Department Investigates Child Sexual Abuse By Priests & Former USA Gymnastics President Arrested For Tampering With Nassar Evidence

0

Good morning Her Campus! With a break-neck news cycle, there is no possible way for you to stay on top of every story that comes across your feeds — we’re all only human, after all.

But, life comes at you fast. So grab a cup of coffee and settle in for this quick and dirty guide to stories you might’ve been sleeping on (like, literally. It’s early.)

John Bolton and John Kelly Have An Intense Screaming Match Over Immigration

National Security Advisor John Bolton and Chief of Staff John Kelly allegedly got into an intense screaming match on Thursday at the White House over immigration Policies, according to CNN.

The argument focused on the increase in border crossings, and the thousands of migrants from Central American countries heading to the United States. CNN reports that Bolton criticized the performance of the Department of Homeland Security and it’s secretary Kirstjen Nielsen. Some have criticized Nielsen for not doing more to secure the U.S. southern borders.

According to CNN, the two had been feuding for several days now over the issues, but on Thursday it broke out into a full-fledged brawl after Trump sided with Bolton.

The president went on a Twitter rant earlier that day, blasting Democrats for “leading” the caravan of migrants to the US borders and threatened to pull foreign aid from Mexico.

US Justice Department Investigates Child Sexual Abuse By Priests in Pennsylvania

Federal prosecutors opened an investigation of child sexual abuse by priests in Pennsylvania, and subpoenaed at least seven church dioceses for secret files and testimonies from high-ranking leaders.

A number of abuse survivors said that this is the first ever federal probe of such magnitude launched by the U.S. Department of Justice, CNNreports.

The dioceses of Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Scranton, Erie, Greensburg, Allentown and Harrisburg all acknowledge receiving subpoenas last week. They also said they plan to cooperate with officials, according to Huffington Post

“The Diocese of Pittsburgh has received the subpoena from the US Department of Justice and will cooperate fully with any and all investigations of sexual abuse of minors by clergy in Pennsylvania,” spokesman Rev. Nicholas S. Vaskov told CNN.

The state grand jury released a report over the summer, which found 301 priests in Pennsylvania had molested more than 1,000 children over seven decades. The report also found that the church had covered up the abuse.

Former USA Gymnastics President Arrested For Tampering With Evidence Linked To Nassar

Former president of USA Gymnastics Steve Penny has been accused of covering up sexual abuse by former doctor Larry Nassar. Penny was arrested on Wednesday over claims that he tampered with evidence in Nassar’s investigation, according to NPR

The arrest comes just one day after former California congressman Mary Bono resigned from her position as CEO and interim president of USA Gymnastics. She was on the job for only four days.

The indictment alleged that Penny demanded the removal of documents related to Nassar from Karolyi Ranch, where the athletes trained in Texas, NPR reports. The documents were then delivered to Penny at the USA Gymnastics headquarters, and he either destroyed or hid them. According to NPR, the documents are still missing.

Penny could receive two to 10 years in prison with a fine up to $10,000.

What to look out for…

Fendi hosted two parties Tuesday night to celebrate new collection, one at its new flagship store on Madison Avenue in New York and the other at its boutique in Beverly Hills. Guests at the New York event included the likes of Ansel Elgort, Chloë Sevigny and Winnie Harlow, who were able to explore the collection alongside replicas of "David," Michelangelo's most famous sculpture and arguably the hottest sculpture ever made.

“The two iconic logos mashed up together, that’s what people do nowadays. It’s fun," Sevigny told the Cut. She also added that she had a "strong affinity for Fila" and that Fendi "epitomized" Italian glamor.

In Los Angeles, the event was attended by Joe Jonas, the Haim sisters and Awkwafina, who were able to browse the collection during a cocktail party.

The full collection is currently online for both men and women, with prices ranging from $170 to $12,900. Everything from swimsuits to winter jackets are included, and all the items feature the special Fila/Fendi logo designed by artist @hey_reilly. Known for his work this year in "brandalising" the internet's biggest brands and logos, his pop-graphic style attracted Fendi and led to the collaboration between Hey Reilly and the two brands to create a unique logo for the new collection.
