'Stranger Things' Just Gave Us A First Look At Season 3 & It Looks Like Hawkins Is Getting Its First Mall

It’s never too soon to head back to Hawkins, Indiana. But this doesn’t really seem like the town we’re used to… or does it?

Netflix has just released its first teaser for Season 3 of its hit series Stranger Things, but it doesn’t give us a lot of information. Instead, it shows us a preview of Hawkins’ newest attraction—the Starcourt Mall!

Between the cheesy synthesizer music, retro graphics and even some older versions of our former favorite stores (RIP Claire’s, seriously), it’s easy to forget that this trailer has anything to do with Stranger Things. That is, until we see Steve Harrington (Joe Keery) working at Scoops Ahoy, the ice cream shop.

Steve is joined at Scoops Ahoy by new character Robin, played by Maya Hawke (daughter of Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke). According to Deadline, Robin is “an alternative girl” who “gets more than she bargained for when she uncovers a dark secret in Hawkins.”

Season 3 is set to feature Lucas’ (Caleb McLaughlin) little sister Erica (Priah Ferguson) and her own band of friends investigating a brand new threat to Hawkins. Sheesh, this town can’t seem to catch a break from shifty stuff!

This '80s homage of a trailer reminds us of exactly what we love about Stranger Things—its vintage vibes and its ability to make the mundane seem just a little bit more creepy than it appears on the surface.

According to the trailer, the Starcourt Mall opens next summer, so we can only assume that Season 3 will be released in Summer 2019! Check it out:

Snoopy Is Going To Be NASA's BFF Again After 50 Years & Our Inner-Child Is Psyched

Fifty years ago, the creator of The Peanuts (you know, Charlie Brown, Snoopy, and the whole gang), Charles M. Schulz, gave his permission to NASA to use Snoopy as a symbol of safety in space. In 1968 NASA created an award for employees whose contributions further mission safety and success in space exploration called the Silver Snoopy Award.

This long standing partnership is being renewed this year with a new Space Act Agreement (Space Act Agreements give NASA that authority to partner with other companies and nonprofits) that gives NASA that ability to use Snoopy and other characters in upcoming projects.

Back in 1968, the partnership began with the launch of the Apollo 10 Mission where two of the command and lunar modules were named Charlie Brown and Snoopy. This mission was preparation for the first moon landing two months later, with the goal of “snooping around” beforehand, which inspired the collaboration with Schulz. Schulz then creating comic strips of “Snoopy on the Moon” sparking excitement for America’s successes in space.

Now, Snoopy and NASA are back together.

NASA and Peanuts Worldwide are joining together to “collaborate on educational activities that share the excitement of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) with the next generation of explorers and thinkers.” By creating space-themed education programming, Snoopy will continue to help spark interest into NASA’s new deep space exploration initiatives.

Craig Schulz, Charles M. Schulz’s son, says “My father once told me that when NASA selected his characters, Charlie Brown and Snoopy, to be the names chosen for the modules for the Apollo 10 mission on its trip to the moon, that it was the proudest moment in his career. He was honored then, and I am honored today as we renew the historic relationship between NASA and Peanuts."

Peanuts is going to be creating “Astronaut Snoopy” content, like a STEM-based curriculum for students centered around deep space objectives, and space-themed activities will be debuting at Comic Con in San Diego in July. A panel titled "Snoopy Space Traveler: The History and Future of Snoopy and NASA” will have representatives from Peanuts and NASA to talk about the partnerships, both in the past and now, between two companies.

Mark Geyer, director of NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston says of the collaboration, "Engaging the public and sharing what we're doing through partnerships with organizations that have a unique way of reaching people helps generate interest and curiosity about space in the next generation.”

Maybe we’ll get to read some cute new Snoopy x NASA comic books, too.

Separated Kids In Migrant Detention Centers Aren't Allowed To Hug Their Siblings & Other Rules That Have Activists Devastated

Although the Trump Administration has put an end to the separation of families at the border and a judge has put a deadline on the reunification of children with their families, it does not mean that the deadlines have been met or that the conditions inside the detention centers are anything close to humane.

Although the deadline for all children to be united with their families is rapidly approaching, more than 2,800 children are still separated from their parents in detention centers. While some of these detention centers are scenic and (aside from the fact that children are being forced to stay there against their will) even relatively nice. But if you’re not one of the lucky ones that get sent to, say, a youth shelter in Yonkers, New York with picnic tables and a pool, the conditions are reportedly appalling. If the detention center doesn’t look like a summer camp, it’s a converted motel next to a gas station or something like a warehouse full of cages. But, they all have one thing in common, the New York Times reported —a strict set of rules that basically serves to make conditions unbearable for children.

“Do not misbehave. Do not sit on the floor. Do not share your food. Do not use nicknames,” the article reads. Children are forced to follow a strict schedule - with lights out by 9 p.m. and wake-up when the sun rises at 6:30 am when the staff made loud banging noises to make sure everyone was up. But that’s not even the worst of it.

Children are told they’re not allowed to touch each other. They’re not even allowed to hug their brothers or sisters. After being separated from their families and forced to spend their days under the care of indifferent, overworked detention center staff, the one thing that they deserve is human contact. But they’re not allowed to have it, and they heartbreakingly often resort to hugging themselves An employee at a Texas detention facility told the New York Times that when the kids are sad "you'll see them sit on the floor and just kind of wrap their arms around themselves."

Additionally, the children are refused contact with members of their family —  no writing in the dorm rooms and no mail are both rules as well. Leticia, a girl from Guatemala, writes letters to her mother in secret and and keeps a stack of them safe in a folder, according to The Times.

Children are not allowed to run or yell, and were scared into being well-behaved under the threat of punishment. Diego, a boy from Brazil, told the Times about what happened to a Guatemalan boy named Adonias who was acting out. “They applied injections because he was very agitated,” he says, “He would destroy things,” and in the middle of class someone Diego called “the doctor” injected Adonias with sedatives so “he would fall asleep.”

In addition to the lack of basic comforts of a home or a family, the kids are being forced to work for the little comforts that they do have. If they have the luxury of a bed, they have to make the bed exactly as the instructions on the wall say. When they have the opportunity to use the restrooms (because of the required staff-to-detainee ratio of 1-to-8, when one kid has to go to the bathroom, seven other kids who need to go to have to be found, and then they all walk there together), they have to clean them too. “You had to clean the bathroom,” says Diego, “I scrubbed the bathroom. We had to remove the trash bag full of dirty toilet paper. Everyone had to do it.”

Although activists are devastated by the conditions that these children are forced to endure right now, there is a glimmer of hope in the future as the deadline for family reunification approaches (July 27). Soon these children will be free from the lack of human touch, love, and access to the carefree childhood that all children deserve.

'Hocus Pocus' Celebrates 25th Anniversary: Here Are 13 Things You Should Know About The Best Halloween-Themed Movie, Ever

$

Can you imagine a Halloween without Hocus Pocus, because I just can't. This film brings back childhood memories of picking out Halloween costumes and gorging myself on candy fresh from trick-or-treating.

This cult classic turns 25 today (yes, I said 25), and in honor of this Halloween favorite, here are 13 facts you should know about the film.

1. Leonardo DiCaprio was originally cast to play Max.

Imagine if Leo was in Hocus Pocus?! He dropped out to film What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?, and his role was eventually brought to life onscreen by Omri Katz.

2. Rosie O’Donnell was originally originally offered the role of Mary Sanderson.

Instead the role went to Kathy Najimy, but wouldn't that be interesting?

3. The movie was originally titled Halloween House.

Nope. It would definitely not be the same.

4. Hocus Pocus began as a bedtime story that producer and co-writer David Kirschner told his two young daughters in the '80s.

“Halloween is a huge deal in our home, and it has been since our daughters were little,” Kirschner said in an interview with Yahoo! Entertainment. “It speaks to me in a way that becomes so emotional for me and always has.”

5. Hocus Pocus was originally written as a Disney Channel Original Movie.

Though it would make sense to make it into a DCOM, they decided instead to go big or go home and release it in theaters.

6. Late Oscar-winning composer James Horner co-wrote "Sarah's Theme," the "Come little children" song Sarah Jessica Parker's character sings while riding her broomstick.

Horner is also well-known for composing the music in Titanic.

7. Real moths flew out of Billy Butcherson’s mouth after he cut open his stitches.

Ew, but this definitely shows the extent actors will go to create a realistic effect for the screen. To pull this off, the crew inserted a device into actor Doug Jones’ mouth to keep the moths from flying down his throat.

8. Hocus Pocus is called “Abracadabra” in other countries.

So if you're craving a little bit of Hocus Pocus, be sure to ask for Abracadabra!

9. Nine different cats played Binx.

Well, this definitely takes on a whole other meaning on cats having nine lives.

10. During filming, Winnie Sanderson, played by Bette Milder, was followed by two people with dictionaries containing old curse words.

I mean, it would be pretty hard to remember all of those curse words, right?

11. The movie was NOT released during the Halloween season, it was released in July of 1993.

Clearly, since today is the 25th anniversary, but it's proof that it's never too early for Halloween. *decorates my room in Halloween decor in the middle of July*

12. Jason Marsden is the voice behind the beloved cat/Thackery Binx.

The actor can be recognized as the voice of Max in The Goofy Movie or D.J.’s boyfriend Nelson on “Full House.”

13. Hocus Pocus was a flop in the box office.

Surprisingly, this classic did not do very well amongst critics and moviegoers, making just $39.5 million according to E!far less than what is expected for a Disney production. (It also didn't help that it was up against Free Willy and Jurassic Park). Let's just say this movie was ahead of its time, eventually capturing the hearts of TV viewers at home to become the nostalgic film we all remember today.

Halsey Opened Up About Her Split From G-Eazy & She Kept It Real AF

Halsey isn’t one to shy away from saying exactly what’s on her mind. Throughout her career, she’s always been honest with her fans about what she’s going through, from suffering from endometriosis to the miscarriage she had while performing on stage.

At a concert in Atlantic City on Saturday, she spoke openly about her recent breakup with rapper G-Eazy before performing her song “Sorry.”  “I learned recently it’s OK to be alone! Being alone is enough,” she said. TRUTH!

She didn’t start the song before disclosing some juicier post-breakup realness. “The second lesson I learned is don’t sleep with your ex.” Hey girl, we’ve all been there.

Later, while performing at Borgata’s Premier Nightclub, as an intro to “Bad At Love," she told all the single people in the audience to go home with somebody, even though she wouldn’t be.

Halsey and G-Eazy dated for nine months, and she confirmed their breakup via an Instagram story on July 3. She was seen crying in concert on July 6 following the split. Rumors have since circulated that the breakup was caused by G-Eazy cheating on Halsey while both of them were on tour, but a source tells Us Weekly that their split was caused by conflicting schedules and the complications of long-distance.

No matter what caused the breakup, this is a difficult time for Halsey, so of course it’s visible while she’s performing. She’s a badass, though, and I know she will recover swiftly from the breakup like a phoenix rising from the ashes.

I Tried Ice Cream Covered in Rice Flour (AKA Mochi) & BTW It's Vegan

If you’re like me, you pretty much can’t go one day without an ice cream cone in your hand, especially in the summer. The flavors and variations are endless. Soft serve, dip cones, dairy-free, sundaes, floats, cakes.

Seriously, ice cream can be anything you need it to be, which is not something that frat guy that hits you up at 2 a.m. can do for you. But, just when you thought ice cream couldn’t get any better, one fave comes to save the day: mochi - a perfectly sized ball of dough covering sweet sweet ice cream.

It also doesn’t hurt that the bright colors by my personal fave brand, My/Mo Mochi Ice Cream, are beyond Instagrammable.

Have you ever dreamed of chewing your ice cream? Kind of an odd fantasy, but I can’t say I haven’t been there. And I figured that for National Ice Cream Month, I should finally make my dreams come true. Because if anything deserves a month, it's beautiful, soft, delish ice cream.

The rice flour covering is super chewy and sweet which makes the ice cream taste even better, just when you thought it couldn’t. When you first pick it up, the new shape is kind of funny looking. You think to yourself, how can ice cream and dough mix? Well, I have no idea, but the creators at My/Mo Mochi Ice Cream know the answer.

Rice flour and ice cream are surprisingly super good together. My/Mo Mochi Ice Cream has perfected eight flavors to choose from – literally any kind you can dream of. You need some green tea after a long day? They’ve got you. Feeling some sweet mango while lying on the beach? You can have a whole box. Treat yourself to vanilla bean, double chocolate, salted caramel, mint chocolate chip, cookies & cream, ripe strawberry, sweet mango, or green tea.

Some of these are also vegan!

I tried the mango, caramel and strawberry. All three were super refreshing and perfectly sized. So, if you’re looking to switch up your ice cream routine, please do yourself a favor and snap that perfect Instagram of you and your bright mochi.

Someone Turned The Cast of 'Queer Eye' Into The Incredibles & I'm Crying

Honestly, we never thought we could love the Incredibles family more. Same with Queer Eye’s fab five. We get it: they’re both completely different cinematic marvels in their own respects. But since we’re fans of cinematic collabs and these two productions (and the people behind them), why wouldn’t we love an iconic collab between the five Incredibles and the five behind Queer Eye? Thankfully, we’re not alone because an artist created a should-be-canonical poster of the Queer Eye five as the Incredibles family.

Seeing as Bobby, Karamo, Antoni, Tan and Jonathan are basically a family already, it’s only natural that an artist would edit their faces on the Incredibles family. But now we totally want to see Bobby, Karamo, Antoni, Tan and Jonathan try out their voice-acting skills in the (hopefully) impending Incredibles 3 animated flick.

Some of the Queer Eye stars themselves noticed the art. “I don’t know who created this photo but we feel Incredible right now," Karamo Brown tweeted.

Not only is Queer Eye nominated for four different Emmy awards, the show was just recently renewed for a third season, The Independent reports. The show will air ambiguously in 2019, so this super-powered portrayal of Bobby, Karamo, Antoni, Tan and Jonathan will have to curb our Queer Eye cravings until then.

Basically all of the Queer Eye contestants are fashionably and confidently thriving, so it’s safe to say that the Queer Eye cast members deserve an infinite amount of fan art (and awards).

Everything You Need To Know About Trump & Putin's Helsinki Summit

$

President Donald Trump and President Putin met for a lot longer than expected on Mondays scheduled 90-minute summit in Helsinki, Finland. In the two hour long session, as USA Today reports, a lot went down. Trump said that the two planned to cover “everything from trade to military to missiles to nuclear in China.”

The summit began with a one-on-one meeting between Putin and Trump with only translators in the room. After that meeting, they then responded to reporters questions in a joint press conference. The summit is one of the most anticipated and historic meetings between US and Russian leaders in possibly years. But, don't worry, we came prepared to unpack everything

Trump Refused To Answer Any Questions About Russia’s Involvement In 2016 Election. And He Blames The US For Our “Bad Manners”.

Hours before Trump’s meeting with Putin, Trump had sent the worst tweet of his presidency, “Our relationship with Russia has NEVER been worse thanks to many years of U.S. foolishness and stupidity, and now, the Rigged Witch Hunt!” It is an obvious reference to the Mueller investigation and the recent indictment of 12 Russian intelligence officers for hacking and leaking information in the 2016 election.

Trump is essentially blaming the US for years of bad relations with Russia. He fails to mention Russia’s annexation of Crimea, interference in the 2016 election, or support for Syria’s authoritarian Assad regime as possible reasons for tensions. Russia’s Ministry Of Foreign Affairs responded to the tweet with, “We Agree”. This basically means they are on the same page now.

But Trump will admit that both sides have “made a mistake”. “I think the U.S has been foolish, I think we’ve all been foolish we all should’ve had this dialogue long time ago,” he said.

According to the New York Times, Trump mentioned the matter to Putin, but he denied any involvement. At the joint press conference, Trump refused to answer a reporter’s question as to whether or not he believed Russia had any interference in the presidential election. He redirected his answer to the misconduct made by Democrats during the campaign, the Times reports.

“I have great confidence in my intelligence people, but I will tell you that President Putin was extremely strong and powerful in his denial today,” Trump said in the joint conference.

“President Trump mentioned the so-called interference of Russia in the American elections. I had to reiterate things I said several times: that the Russian state has never interfered, and is not going to interfere, in internal American affairs, including the election process,” Putin said.

According to the Times, he is actually offering Russian intelligence agencies to work with American officers to get down to the bottom of all of this. Awkward, to say the least.

Both Leaders Agreed To Cooperate In The Future...May be?

Putin and Trump have both agreed to improving relations between the countries, whatever that really means.  The two leaders said they were going to cooperate and build better relations on global issues, but they reportedly never mentioned any examples. Though, according to CBS News, they disagreed on many areas in their news conference

For instance, Crimea. Back in 2014, Russia snatched Crimea from the Ukraine. Obama condemned the action, and the EU sanctioned Russia for it. No one recognizes Crimea as a part of Russia, except for countries like Venezuela or Syria according to CBS. Russia also built a bridge from Russia to Crimea in May to help their relationship.

While Trump didn’t say anything about the issue, according to the Times, Putin was asked about Trump’s side.

“The posture of President Trump on Crimea is well known and he stands firmly by it. He continues to maintain that it was illegal to annex it, our viewpoint is different.”

They also continue to disagree, very strongly, on the Iran nuclear deal. Trump withdrew from the deal in May, but Putin still found it to be a success. Who knows if they will actually learn to “cooperate” in the future over these issues.

Side Note: Putin Gave Trump A Soccer Ball As A Literal Metaphor

This probably isn’t as important as the impending future of the US and Russia’s interactions, but it requires at least an honorary mention. Putin gifted the president with a World Cup Soccer ball, and said the “ball is in your court”. The metaphor is real, right now. Trump then proceeded to throw the ball to Melania.

#TreasonSummit Trended On Twitter & It Really Shows That We All Have A Vote Of No Confidence On This

There was a ton of speculation about the success and disastrous outcomes of this summit, before and during.  Trump found this to be “a very good start”  and “the first step towards a brighter future” with frequent dialogue between the two countries, according to CNN

The internet has no confidence that anything will be achieved from this meeting. Hours before the conference the hashtag Treason Summit began to trend, and naturally everyone on Twitter had an opinion on what the hell was going on.

Guys, she literally warned us!

Who is really in charge here?

Where are his priorities?

Puppet or President?

Some Republicans even weighed in with their thoughts.

“I never thought that I would see the day when our president would stand on stage with the Russian president and place blame on the United states for aggression. This is shameful,” tweeted Arizona senator Jeff Flake.

This is just one of many conversations Putin and Trump are most likely going to have. As you can possibly see, it doesn’t look like much was accomplished.

Why Mixing Patterns Is the Most Clothes-Related Fun You Can Have

$
0
0

My Instagram discover page is almost entirely filled with fashion, so it takes a lot for something to stand out. But recently, one post in particular caught my eye while I was mindlessly scrolling through my feed, and the only thing I could think was outfit goals.

Mondays are for power suits 💪

A post shared by Olivia Palermo (@oliviapalermo) on

Some people just have a knack for it mixing patterns (see: the goddess Olivia Palermo) without looking like a toddler dressing themselves for the first time. In this one outfit Palermo succeeded in mixing three different patterns plus two different kinds of vertical stripes, and she looked far from a sartorially-impaired toddler (i.e. me). She looked seriously chic. How????

With this picture mentally pinned on my inspiration board and literally saved in my Instagram collections, I made it my mission to spend my week attempting to mix patterns like Palermo.

Attempt #1

On Monday, the first step was picking one color and finding two patterns that included it (mixing contrasting colored patterns is expert level, we’re starting off slow). I chose classic navy blue and white, and picked a striped shirt and floral pants. Actually, the pants are really a jumpsuit, so I guess I attempted layering, too. But that’s a story for another time.

I felt pretty good in this outfit. I didn’t feel like I was trying to hard to make something cool, but the mixed patterns added just a little excitement to my day.

Attempt #2

In the name of honesty, I admit that I skipped a day, because the pressure to pattern mix two days in a row was all too much, and returned to my mission on Wednesday. This time I went for florals and plaid (side note: I definitely need to buy some new patterns. Maybe some polka dots?). I paired black plaid pants with a pink floral button down, unbuttoned from the bottom up for some added ~fun~.

This pattern mixing was on the safer side - you can barely even tell the pants are patterned, but I promise they are. Here’s this close up for proof.

Attempt #3

Then came Thursday, my final attempt at successfully mixing patterns. I kicked it up a notch, mixing not one but two floral patterns. One was a bomber jacket with a oversized floral print, and the other was my all time favorite button-down in an small floral.

This was my favorite outfit of all three. I think the reason that this works is because the colors blend together (a little yellow and black in each), and the fact that one pattern is smaller and more subtle than the other. If they were both oversized and entirely in-your-face, I don’t think I could have pulled it off.

So, what did I learn?

Pattern mixing is a honestly so fun, and I definitely don’t think I looked like I got dressed in the dark. Did I master the art of pattern mixing? Debatable. But I’ve still got a whole lifetime left to try and an entire Instagram collection for inspiration.

Why That Pair of Statement Shoes Is More Versatile Than You Think

$

0

To anyone who’s ever shied away from buying the perfect pair of statement shoes because you couldn’t envision a world where you’d wear them more than once: we feel you. But you were wrong.

If you’re like us, you dream of wearing shoes that make you look like you have flowers growing from your toes or confetti on your feet (in a good way), but something always holds you back. Usually you worry that a statement shoe is only acceptable for certain ~fancy~ occasions, not for everyday wear, so you never end up buying those shoes that you know in your heart are made for you.

Not to mention the fact that finding such a perfect pair of statement sandals is near impossible - there always seems to be something that makes shoes less-than-ideal, specifically heel-height. For every time you’ve found the perfect sandal to wear with your yellow polka-dot bikini – only to realize that you can’t wear 6-inch heels to the beach, there’s been a time when you’ve found a pair that perfectly matches your going out dress – only to remember that wearing flats will get you lost in the sea of your tall friends.

But now the perfect summer shoe doesn’t have to be so hard to find, and the same style that works for your sunset rooftop party can double as the perfect sandal for you day walking the boardwalk at the beach. You can totally make a statement sandal (like these Betsey Johnson beauties, for example), work for any occasion, with any outfit you please. This same style comes in two different heel heights, sky-high and mid-heel, so the dilemma of not being able to wear your flowery faves to the beach and to a party is solved.

We styled four outfits, with everything from a vintage-inspired look to a lounging-by-the-pool ensemble, to prove just how versatile these statements shoes can be.

1. For Sunday brunch with your best girlfriends

Nothing’s better than late morning brunch with your besties - except maybe a kick-ass pair of shoes. Play up the flowers on your shoes with a floral pattern around your neck, throw on some flowy pants that give your stomach room for all the avocado toast and waffles (separately, of course) that you can handle.

2. For laying in the sun all day long

Whether you’re lounging by the pool or spending the day at the beach, these flats will keep you comfortable all day long. Play off the yellow in the daisies with a cute patterned swimsuit (and mix patterns for an added bit of fun).

3. For a summer night out

Throw on the heeled version of these amazing sandals for a night out. Whether you’re going to a concert or to dinner, pairing the shoes with a classic gingham dress and denim jacket is an easy way to hit every mark on the summer wardrobe checklist.

4. For a picnic in the park

For a casual day in the park with a good book, pair the platforms with jeans and a simple t-shirt that plays off the color of the shoes. Instead of a regular old pair of jeans, mix it up with colorblocked denim in two tones, and maybe even match your book to your outfit, too.

No matter where you decide to go, the perfect summer shoes can take you there.

Buy these statement sandals in both high-heel and flat platform and where them every day this summer. [Betsey Johnson Sedona and Pipper, both $79.00]

12 Summery Tattoos on Instagram That'll Inspire Your Next Ink Investment

$
0
0

Summer has become synonymous with sunshine, sand and shandy. Since most of us don’t have to worry about courses (and if you do, you’re still spending less time in your classes than the academic year), there's downtime to enjoy the unbearably arid weather summer leisure time. While you destress post-finals and earn some extra change from your summer job, it's the perfect time invest in a summery tattoo so you can take the summer with you whenever, regardless of what the temperature is outside (or what the date says on your Google calendar).

If you enjoy summer so much that you want to dedicate some ink to your favorite season, we definitely don’t blame you. (And who would?) Crafting the perf summery tattoo design can be difficult, though, so we have some inspo to help you along on your ink itinerary.

1. Make some waves

Sure, people might say the classic wave line tattoo is basic. But is there really anything wrong with being a bit basic? Basic gave us Starbucks and the lob—so let your basic self flourish. After all, how could you resist a simple and small tattoo that pays homage to the sea?

2. Or incorporate some waves into a classic geometric tattoo

Geometric tattoos are an undying trend for your flesh—and we’re glad there isn’t an end in sight for this trend because, well, shapes bring a graphic element to any design. If a basic, singular wave isn’t your style, then try incorporating a wave or beach scene inside (and outside) of your geometric parameters.

3. Combine two of your favorite things

We get it, not everyone likes wine, or the ocean, for that matter. But use this aesthetically pleasing wine glass filled with the ocean to guide your creative journey. Maybe you can combine a seashell with your love of the macabre by asking your tattoo artist to design a skull-shell hybrid. The options are limitless.

4. Ink your favorite beach beast

In our opinion, jellyfish are graceful goddesses, when they aren’t trying to sting us. In their defense, they're just trying to protect themselves, so we can’t blame them.

Aside from the jelly’s grace, they’re powerful creatures. Tattooing a jellyfish on your body could allow you to celebrate the powerful feminist icon, the jellyfish, wherever you go—because sometimes a very real part of feminism is just floating along, trying to survive.

5. And shape it out

If you don’t want to incur the copious questions about what the meaning behind your critter-themed tattoo is, you can always use the silhouette of your favorite seabird or summery animal as a base that encapsulates a floral or summery design within it. Sometimes we just like parrots, so we wanted to get a parrot tattoo—so stop asking us about the meaning of our tats, Karen. Not everything needs to be meaningful.

6. Add a twist to your fave marine critter

Narwhals might be the true unicorns of the sea, but who’s to say the seahorse living on your forearm can’t be a unicorn too?

7. Turn an unconventional sign of summer into a tat

Cicadas, whether they’re the elusive 17-year-cicada or the generic annual cicada, are basically summer’s mating call. We get it: creepy crawlies might not be your thing, but cicadas are crucial to announcing the beginning of the summer every year. We think they should be celebrated for their underappreciated job as summer’s presenter. Plus, they’re kind of cute. (Go ahead and @ us because we’ll gladly have a Twitter fight for the sake of cicadas.)

8. Grace your skin with a simple shell

A post shared by Yarden (@yardenmizrahi) on

Even if you’ve never visited a beach in your life (because traveling is expensive AF), inking a single seashell on your skin can help remind you that you’re a glorious, summery mermaid year-round.

9. Add some creativity to your typical summery flowers

Flowers, especially hibiscus, are basically the florasona of summer and warmer weather in general. You could ask your tattoo artist to craft a standard hyper-realistic floral design on your sleeve, but you might want to consider a stipple tattoo. Flower are implicitly colorful, but donning a dot-induced, black and white rendition of your favorite summer flower could spice up your summery design.

10. Get some ink of your fave summer grub

Food is life, and there are few things in life that we love more than food. So, rep a shameless illustration of a pineapple or a popsicle on your skin. Not every single tattoo needs to be serious, so we get you.

11. Make your summery tats goth

Summer vibes! Lil ice cream skullz on @ichapman92

A post shared by Lily Rafferty (@needle.mistress) on

We support iconic duos, which is why we support making summer gothic. You could go with the aforementioned skull-shell tattoo chimera, but you could also incorporate your inner Wednesday Addams in your foodie tattoo.

12. Transfer your inner painter into your tattoo

Whether you think you're the Bob Ross of watercolor or you just loved experimenting with watercolor paint as a kid, everyone can appreciate a painterly watercolor design. It's easy to see why because watercolor is such a malleable medium (seeing as water is, well, flexible too). You could get a full-blown watercolor design of a beach scene, add a hint of watercolor to your tattoo or even gradually transition the watercolor to simple, solid lines.

Regardless of which tattoo(s) you're considering this summer, we want to add some summer ink to our skin. After all, this is the closest we'll get to having a year-round summer.

Netflix Released First Look At Olivia Colman As Queen Elizabeth in 'The Crown'& Long Live the Queen

Netflix has officially given us our first glimpse at Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II in the third season of The Crown, and Colman looks like the most worthy successor to the throne, as Claire Foy, who originated the role, passes the reigns (or reign, rather) to Colman.

On Monday, The Crown’s official Twitter account posted a photo of Colman as the Queen, wearing a pale pink suit and pearls, and sipping a cup of tea, with the caption “patience.” The caption is fitting considering that the next season of the Netflix show isn’t expected to premiere until 2019.

While details surrounding the new season of the show have been kept under wraps, season three of The Crown is confirmed to take place between 1964 and 1976. According to Hello Giggles, the timeline means that we’ll witness the demise of Princess Margaret’s marriage with Antony Armstrong-Jones, and the blossoming relationship between young Prince Charles and his future second wife, Camilla Shand.

Colman is just one of the several principal characters being replaced in the show that follows the Queen’s ascension to and tenure atop the monarchy. In addition to Colman stepping in as the Queen, Tobias Menzies will be taking over the role of Prince Philip from Matt Smith and Helena Bonham-Carter will be succeeding Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret, Variety reports.

Ben Daniels is set to replace Matthew Goode as Antony Armstrong-Jones, and Call The Midwife star Erin Doherty will play Princess Anne, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip’s only daughter.

There has been no announcement yet of who will play Prince Charles, but Josh O’Connor of God’s Own Country has been rumored as a strong candidate.

According to People, The Crown recently nabbed 13 Emmy nominations, including a nomination for best drama and nods for Foy, Smith, Kirby and Goode for their roles on the show.

Can’t wait to see Colman as Queen Elizabeth when The Crown returns in 2019!

DOJ Charges Russian Gun Rights Activist Maria Butina With Acting As A Foreign Agent

FBI counterintelligence agents have arrested a 29-year-old Russian woman for acting as a Kremlin agent over the past three years while working to develop relationships with high-ranking National Rifle Association (NRA) officials.

Maria Butina, who had been living in Washington and graduated with a master’s degree in international relations from American University, was arrested on Sunday after the FBI conducted an investigation and searched two of Butina’s electronic devices, The Huffington Post reports.

According to an affidavit attached to a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Washington on Saturday, Butina “took steps to develop relationships with American politicians in order to establish private, or as she called them, ‘back channel’ lines of communication.” Kevin Helson, an FBI agent with the counterintelligence division within the bureau’s Washington field office, said Butina sought to use the NRA to gain access to U.S. officials to pursue interests of the Russian government.

Butina is the founder of a Russian gun rights group called “Right to Bear Arms,” and her activism dates back to at least 2014, when she attended the NRA convention in Indianapolis, HuffPost reports. It was through her gun rights advocacy work that she became closely connected with Paul Erickson, a Republican political operative.

In the affidavit, the FBI alleges that Butina came to the U.S. under the direction of a Russian official. While the Russian official is unnamed, it appears that, based on the description, the Russian official is her longtime mentor Alexander Torshin, deputy governor of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation and close ally to Russian President Vladimir Putin, ABC News reports.

Torshin, according to ABC News, is also a lifetime member of the NRA, and had attended several of the organization’s events until he was sanctioned, along with Russian oligarchs, by the U.S.

Butina and Torshin had accompanied NRA board members on a trip to Moscow in December 2015, and had sat at a table with Donald Trump Jr. at the NRA convention in May 2016. The two also attended the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington D.C. in 2017, where President Donald Trump was the keynote speaker.

The affidavit also contains quotes from numerous private messages between Butina and the Russian official, as well as with an unnamed U.S. person, before the 2016 presidential election. The affidavit notes that she met with both individuals as they developed an “influence operation,” HuffPost reports.

In 2015, Butina emailed the U.S. individual, saying that the NRA held a “central place and influence” in an unnamed political party, and was the party’s “largest sponsor of the elections to the US congress, as well as a sponsor of The CPAC conference and other events.” The U.S. person emailed an acquaintance the following year, saying, “I’ve been involved in securing a VERY private line of communication between the Kremlin” and officials of an unnamed political party through an unnamed gun rights organization.

Butina also exchanged messages with the Russian official on Twitter, discussing their strategies and the importance of their work.

“Time will tell,” Butina wrote. “We made our bet. I am following our game.”

“No doubt,” the Russian official responded. “Of course we will win … And it is not about winning today’s fight (although we are striving for it) but to win the entire battle. This is the battle for the future, it cannot be lost! Or everyone will lose.”

In a statement, Butina’s attorney said that her actions were nothing more than “open and public networking” by a foreign student, not some covert operation.

Butina is currently being held without bond, and will have a hearing later this week, according to a press release from the Justice Department.

HC Wake-Up Call: Judge Orders Temporary Stop of Family Deportations, Lava Bomb Injures 23 in Hawaii & Trump Baby Might Be Coming to the U.S.

Good morning, Her Campus! With a break-neck news cycle, there is no possible way for you to stay on top of every story that comes across your feeds—we’re all only human, after all.

But, life comes at you fast. So grab a cup of coffee and settle in for this quick and dirty guide to stories you might’ve been sleeping on (like, literally. It’s early.)

Federal Judge Orders Government to Temporarily Stop Family Deportations

A federal judge has ordered the Trump administration to temporary halt the deportation of immigrant families for at least a week after reuniting them.

According to The Huffington Post, the Trump administration is currently working to reunite approximately 2,500 immigrant children who were separated from their parents at the border, mainly due to the zero tolerance policy that was in place. A government official said in court on Monday that the government is still working looking for the parents of 71 of those children.

via Justin Lane, epa-EFE

Last month, Judge Dana Sabraw order the government to reunite children under the age of five with their families by July 10, and children five years and older by July 26. Sabraw said the reunifications still need to happen as quickly as possible, but there would be a temporary halt on the deportation of reunited families.

Deportations of the reunited families will be halted for at least a week.

The American Civil Liberties Union, which is representing the families, asked the judge to not deport the families for at least a week “given the persistent and increasing rumors – which [the government has] refused to deny – that mass deportations may be carried out imminently and immediately upon reunification.”

Government attorney Sarah Fabian said there could be a chance that this order would delay reunifications since due to space limitations, but the judge rejected the argument, stating that if there is a lack of space, the government will need to find a way to remedy it.

Lava Bomb Injures 23 People On Tour Boat in Hawaii

A lava bomb crashed through the roof of a tour boat on Monday, injuring 23 people near where lava continues to flow into the ocean from the Kilauea volcano in Hawaii, ABC News reports.

via Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources/Reuters

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a lava bomb is a large rock projected in a volcanic explosion. The lava bomb that struck the tour boat was the size of a basketball.

Four passengers on the boat were transported to Hilo Medical Center by ambulance. One of those passengers is listed in serious condition with a fractured femur, ABC News reports.

Other injured passengers drive themselves to the hospital, according to the Hawaii County Fire Department, but only had superficial injuries.

The continued lava flow into the ocean from the volcano has created a new lava “island” just off the shore line.

Lava flow has continued to destroy building and infrastructure, including the Kua O Ka La Charter School, which was destroyed by the lava last week.

Trump Baby Balloon Might Be Coming to the U.S.

During President Donald Trump’s UK visit last week, the president was met with large protests in London. One of the most notable parts of the protest was the 19-foot “Trump Baby” balloon that floated over London’s Parliament Square Garden, and now it looks like Trump Baby will make its way to the U.S.

According to Hello Giggles, activist Didier Jiminez-Castro from Hillsborough, New Jersey created a GoFundMe page to raise money to bring Trump Baby to America. Jiminez-Castro’s campaign seeks to fly the Trump Baby balloon in Bedminster, New Jersey, which is home to Trump’s National Golf Course.

Y

“I got together with local organizers and we agreed we need to bring Baby Trump to Bedminster where he plays golf on the regular,” Jiminez-Castro wrote on the GoFundMe page. “I contacted the manufacturer and now we are raising money to have one shipped to us. During an interviewed he mention he does not feel welcome with the Baby Trump in display and we need to get under his skin as much as we can.”

The GoFundMe campaign listed a goal of $4,500, but quickly reached $8,000.

“Within 22 hours, we reached our goal,” Jimenez-Castro told the Bridgewater Courier News. “I contacted the manufacturer again and we will have our balloon by mid-August. The order is going in Monday.”

Jiminez-Castro said he will be working with Jim Girvan, chair of the Branchburg Democratic Party and founder of a local anti-Trump group, the People’s Motorcade, to take Trump Baby on a tour of New Jersey, New York and Connecticut, and use it to encourage people to register to vote and get involved in politics.

It looks like Trump Baby will be making a trip across the pond.

The Best Prime Day Beauty Deals You Can Still Purchase Today

$
0
0

If you spend your week perpetually plugged into to the internet, you likely know that Amazon Prime Day is upon us. While in our heart of hearts we wish our fall semester textbooks were the things on sale, we're not complaining about getting stellar beauty deals either. Plus, you won’t feel as fiscally irresponsible shopping your heart out today because all these products are on sale for a reduced price.

Read below for the top items we're adding to our carts before Prime Day ends!

1. Botanic Hearth Activated Charcoal Shampoo ($12.15)

Beyond the charcoal-infusion (which we’re told is allegedly good for our skin and hair health), this frock cleanser is teeming with argan oil, avocado oil and jojoba oil, which help protect your hair’s natural oils and make sure your hair stays moisturizer during and after your shower. (Seriously, who doesn’t want to be moisturized at this point?)

2. Eucerin Sensitive Skin Face Creme ($5.71)

TBH, this product is already college-budget-friendly without the Prime Day discount. But, are you really going to complain about getting a few dollars off a sensitive moisturize that’s practically age-defying too? That’s like saying you don’t want to be able to afford John Mayer’s skincare treasure trove.

3. Unicorn Snot Holographic Body Glitter Gel ($10.39)

We know that festival season is already underway, but, you might already need to restock your glitter rations before your next festival. Or maybe you just like to look like the land-dwelling mermaid that you overtly are. Regardless, inexpensive, vegan and cruelty-free glitter is an essential part of our budget. (It’s basically an amenity at this point.)

4. Natural Himalayan Salt Full Body Scrub ($10.41)

You might already have a dorm-made blend of sugar scrubs for your bath-time mental health breaks; however, salt can be an efficient exfoliant too. (Especially if your pores are prone to breakouts from, well, just looking at sugar.)

5. Radiant Complex Face Primer ($13.50)

As shameless beauty fanatics, we’ve tried basically every primer because we want to make sure our makeup stays porefect as long as possible (regardless of what your personal definition of perfect might be). IMO, this formula is extremely lightweight and dries down to almost nothing, without any risk of filmy or white residue. Even if you don’t wear makeup or wear makeup too often, this primer can help add an extra layer of moisture to your skin after your 2-step or 12-step serum and moisturizer routine.

6. The Body Shop Tea Tree Skin Clearing Facial Wipes ($7.61)

Nobody likes wiping away that winged eyeliner that took you two hours and some change to somewhat get symmetrical. Once you finally come to terms with the fact that you should probably part with your cut-crease between you take a nap, these makeup-removing and cleansing wipes will help prevent your skin from becoming irritated (or at least more agitated) from the cosmetics you’ve been procrastinating removing.

7. Bath Bombs Gift Set ($23.72)

We won’t tell anyone that you’re actually going to use this entire gift set on yourself (because same). Everyone knows and love bath bombs, unless you hate taking those partaking in those disgusting dead skin cesspools people call baths, in which case just come to terms with lounging in your own filth for the sake of the relaxing side effects from the actual bath bombs.

These are just a few of the ~beautiful~ discounts Amazon Prime Day has to offer, and our wallets are already weeping.

This Video Of A Mini Selena Gomez Ranting About Her Day At School Is Honestly Too Cute For Our Hearts To Handle

We all have those days where there’s so much going on. We’re just so stressed and overworked. The workload seems like it’ll never end, and all we want to do is take a nap.

Well baby Selena Gomez can relate, too.

In this adorable video posted by Selena’s mom Mandy Teefey, mini Sel rants to her mom about the crushing homework assignments that her teacher had given her. At just five years old, she’s got a lot of sass and attitude for someone so tiny.

“@selenagomez talking to me on the phone when I was at work asking about her day at school," Mandy captioned the post. "My sassy, independent, boss lady, adorable gigantic piece of my heart, first born love.”

Complete with deep sighs and some great eye rolls, Selena says “My teacher says I got to do all this stuff again. I have to do it by myself. Teacher said I gotta do it! I'm gonna be crazy, you gotta help me over here." We feel you.

Even though we can’t hear Selena’s mom on the other end of the line, we can only imagine what she said to elicit the hands-down best line of baby Selena’s rant—the sassy “You better girl” and dramatic lip purse. Mandy probably wanted to teach her daughter some independence, and most likely told Selena that she wasn’t going to get any help with her hefty workload.

Even as a toddler Selena shows she has some serious acting chops. She switches between exasperated, demanding, angry, sassy, and sad at the drop of a hat. Someone definitely deserves an Oscar.

With One Blockbuster Left In The U.S., Your Childhood Just Ended

Many of us probably have childhood memories of going to the Blockbuster in our neighborhood and picking out our favorite movie or TV show DVDs for a family movie night. (My personal pick was a Hello Kitty animated series, from what I remember.) But now, the closest that future generations will get to that experience is typing a title into the Netflix search bar, as only one Blockbuster remains in the U.S.

The store, which is in Bend, Oregon and is managed by Sandi Harding, has become something of a recent tourist attraction. I guess it’s the American equivalent of an ancient monument, or something—according to The Washington Post, the computers still use floppy disks.

“Every day, even before this, people would drive by and see the ‘Open’ sign and say, ‘Oh my gosh. How are you still here? Why are you still here?’” Harding said in an interview. With streaming services, Blockbuster stores have been rendered almost completely useless, leading to the closing of thousands of stores across the nation. Throughout July, the Bend location was one of three, the other two being in Alaska. But both Alaska locations closed on July 15, making Harding’s store the lone survivor.

The Bend location seems to be taking to the role with gusto, however: their Twitter handle is @loneblockbuster to really sell their brand, and they currently have over 322,000 followers.

The rest of Twitter seems to be a little more solemn about the fallen Blockbusters (though still with a sense of humor, of course).

Personally, I think the last Blockbuster could actually hold on for a while, if it keeps its novelty status as a relic of the ‘90s. I’m rooting for it—and I’m also kind of wondering if they still have that Hello Kitty animated series.
