Rachel Platten Apologizes For 'Embarrassing' National Anthem Flub

From Christina Aguilera to Fergie, it seems like celebrities can’t ever escape the nightmare of messing up the National Anthem. Sometimes the honor can be too much to handle, and this time every singer’s biggest fear came true for Rachel Platten.

On Saturday before the NWSL game between the Utah Royals and the Chicago Red Stars, the “Fight Song” songstress had to restart her performance of “The Star Spangled Banner” not once, but twice. Rachel was completely devastated that she had messed up such an important song.

“I was so nervous going into it. The anthem is such a big deal; it’s probably the most important song for our country. I always get nervous because it means so much because it is so powerful” she told People.

Rachel had performed the national anthem may times before, but she says it was “like a test that you know all the material to, you study so much and you get in there, and your mind doesn’t cooperate.”

Although she flubbed a few times, the singer's third attempt at the anthem was successful.

The 36-year-old artist has apologized repeatedly for her perfromance and is hoping to learn from her mistake, and use it in a positive way. “None of us are perfect; I’m not perfect,” Platten said. “I really understand how it feels to not like something about yourself or have a big flaw. This is an opportunity to own that message more and hopefully share it more powerfully.”

Hayley Kiyoko Says She Dreams Of Being The Next 'Bachelorette'—With 26 Women To Choose From

Boss babe Hayley Kiyoko is a huge fan of The Bachelor, and she's advocating for an all-female version of The Bachelorette.

In a "Rant & Rave" interview segment with Fuse, Kiyoko says, "My dream is to be The Bachelorette and to have 26 women to choose from." Now, the odds of that happening are slim to none as of right now because like Kiyoko argues, the show is catered towards "middle America," and middle America apparently only wants to see heterosexual couples.

Boring!

The interview continues with Kiyoko bringing up more serious topics like equal pay, where she says, "I am definitely fighting for that, as should everyone else." Whether you're a woman or a minority (or both!), we should all get paid as equally as the next straight, white male. It's what we deserve.

The playful video also really brings out Kiyoko's personal side, which fans don't always get to see through Instagram posts. When topics such as astrology came up, Kiyoko fed into it! She's an Aries, which means she's gotta be lit. Watching her talk about her love for astrology made me fall even more in love with her! "If a girl asks me what my sign is, they're obviously flirting with me, so...," she says.

So... should I ask her what her sign is? Hayley, if you're reading this, I'm a Pisces.

And with festival season in full effect, Kiyoko also expressed her excitement to perform at Coachella this year! She's grown up with the festival, attending nearly every year, so this must be a dream come true for her.

Watching this interview with Hayley makes it almost impossible not to fall for her flirty personality and overall self. She's talented, gorgeous, a feminist, and an LGBTQ stan. This makes her anyone's dream girl.

Good News for One Direction Fans: Liam Payne Says A 1D Reunion Could Happen

If you're anything like me, you were a One Direction obsessed teenie bopper at some point in your life. So, to brighten your day and make midterm week as bearable as possible, here is some good news for you, 1D alumni: Liam Payne hinted to German media source Promiflash that the boy band has been considering linking up sometime in the distant future. You heard that? A One Direction reunion, kids.

After the band slowly parted their ways during a hiatus to work on their solo careers, Directioners were left heartbroken seeing their favorite boy band fall apart. But to be honest, this hiatus has proved to be a very good thing for these five, as they've had success in their own careers. Can't even blame the boys for going their own ways—after all, you gotta do what's best for you! (Except Zayn, of course, because he actually left the band and gave us an actual heartbreak at the tender age of 14).

Since all the drama of the breakup has sizzled down and the boys have had time to grow on their own, cutie Liam Payne said, "This part is now so important for us to be able to make that show, and it's the only way really that One Direction could get any bigger."

While this reunion is expected to gather most of the boys together, it's unclear of whether or not Zayn will come back to the crew. In the past, he's expressed his own issues with being part of the band, such as hectic road trips and having a hard time dealing with the fame that came with being in the world's most popular boy band. While this is definitely understandable, it would still be a dream come true if every member came together for a reunion.

Everything's still up in the air for now, as a reunion hasn't been officially announced, but us former 1D stans are crossing our fingers in hopes that this actually happens.

Supreme Court Invalidates Law That Allows Immigrants To Be Deported For 'Violent Crimes'

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court invalidated a law that requires immigrants who have committed some “violent crime” to be deported. They stated that the law was “unconstitutionally vague.”

This SCOTUS case, Sessions v. Dimaya, originated during the Obama Administration, CNN notes. James Garcia Dimaya emigrated from the Philippines in 1992, when he was 13 years old, and was admitted into the United States as a lawful permanent resident. In 2007 and 2009, Dimaya pleaded no charges of residential burglary, and in 2010, an in immigration judge determined that because of these convictions, Dimaya was removable from the US.

The court said this was due to the Immigration and Nationality Act, which allows non-citizens to be removed if they have been convicted of "crimes of violence."

Dimaya’s lawyers appealed the removal, stating that “crimes of violence” was unconstitutionally vague and that Dimaya hadn’t been warned that his actions could result in deportation. They cited a 2015 Scalia opinion, which called another law “unconstitutionally vague”, and argued it should apply in this case as well. As the LA Timesnoted, Deputy Solicitor General Edwin Kneedler emphasized that deportation "is not punishment for [a] past offense.

"I think it is important for the court to understand that immigration provisions and grounds for deportation are often written in very broad and general terms and given content by the executive branch in which Congress has vested authority," Kneedler said.

The law was invalidated with a 5-4 majority.

How to Deal When Acne is Hurting Your Mental Health

Acne is a real drag. And having to look at your skin in the mirror if you have it can seriously take a toll on your mental health. According to acne.org, “the psychological impairments in acne include higher rates of depression, anxiety, anger and suicidal thoughts.” While it’s not proven that acne causes depression, it can happen to anyone who struggles with the condition.

So, when you feel like your acne is affecting your mental health, what should you do? We found a few different ways to help.

1. Visit a dermatologist to figure out what the situation is

If you find that acne has recently become a significant problem for you, schedule an appointment with a dermatologist. Shannon, a junior at Boston College, says that she didn’t think about how serious it was until her doctor mentioned it.

“I eventually went to a dermatologist, who gave me a strong, medicated cream that I have used ever since,” she says. “My skin is so much clearer now.” Autumn, a recent graduate of Emmanuel College, tried many products before finally getting a prescription medication.

“During my sophomore year of college, I went on Accutane and although that was a brutal and tiring process, the results stuck,” Autumn says. A good derm can help you find a product that will work to clear your acne, and can also help you determine why you’re breaking out.

2. Find refuge in retail therapy

If you find that your acne just won’t go away, go shopping for makeup and other skincare products. Some people feel that trying out these products is a great self-care method.

“While I'll always recommend seeing a dermatologist, I find refuge in trying [skincare] products,” says Makenzie, a junior at Emmanuel College. Consider trying different products, such as face masks or washes to take care of your acne. Makenzie says that buying skincare products recommended by her favorite influencers and reviewing them on Sephora has helped her feel happier.

“It's a mix of taking the reins on my own skincare AND retail therapy that helps me fight my insecurities,” she says.

Some products you can try are Clinique Acne Solutions Clearing Concealer (Sephora, $18), Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Stress Control Power-Cream Wash (Target, $7.49), or Sephora Collection Mud Mask Purifying & Mattifying (Sephora, $20).

3. Learn to look at yourself the way your best friend (or family member) does

Autumn suggests that when you’re struggling with your mental health from acne, think of how your friends look at you.

“My friends never saw my acne or blemishes, they saw me for who I was inside,” she says. “Viewing myself in this way helped me to feel better about my skin and continue to appreciate other aspects of myself more." Your best friends aren’t going to judge you based on your skin, so think about that when you’re looking at yourself in a mirror.

“Stay positive and know your worth outside of your appearance,” Autumn says. “You are not your acne.”

Dr. Roy Stefanik is a mental health counselor, as well as a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Georgetown University School of Medicine and part of the clinical faculty at George Washington University. Stefanik suggests taking an “inventory” of yourself.

“What features about yourself, both physically and emotionally, do you like about yourself? Do you find yourself relying on external validation more than perhaps you should?” he asks. Try to think about how you feel about yourself, and relate it back to what your friends and family think as well. Ultimately, you should remember that your appearance is not the only factor.

4. Try going makeup-free a few days a week

Makeup is an obvious way to cover up your acne, but there are many other ways to deal with acne instead. You can use medication, skincare products and face washes. When Shannon developed acne from stress, she felt she had to start wearing makeup.

“I never wore makeup daily until going to college,” she says. “I love going makeup-free or minimal with my makeup a few days a week, but I felt like I couldn't do this anymore.” Once her acne started to go away, her self-esteem improved and she had the confidence to not wear makeup every day.

“Try and figure out a way to get rid of the acne instead of covering your skin with makeup that's just going to clog your pores,” Shannon says. She also advises going makeup-free once a week. Whether you feel more comfortable wearing makeup or going without, also consider how your acne may react to the products. It’s up to you to decide how you feel about wearing makeup, so if you feel better covering up your acne with products, go right ahead!

5. Consider seeing a counselor

Even after seeing a dermatologist or using different methods to clear your acne, you may still feel sad or anxious. This may be a time for a counselor or therapist to step in.

“If you continuously struggle with not liking yourself, the acne issue may only be part of the picture,” says Stefanik. He suggests scheduling an appointment with counseling services at your school or seeing a therapist privately. Talking to someone may help you figure out what the underlying cause is and how you can feel better.

Having acne may seem like the end, but it doesn’t have to be. It’s important to remember how your mental health is impacted. Take care of both your skin and mental health, whether it’s talking to a professional, using skincare products, or working on your confidence.

A Video Shows a Black Harvard Student Being Punched by Police as They Arrest Him

An investigation has been launched into the Cambridge, Massachusetts police department after a video of two officers tackling and punching a black Harvard student surfaced online over the weekend.

According to the Washington Post, the student, who has been identified as 21-year-old Selorm Ohene, was the subject of at least seven emergency calls made by people who saw him acting aggressively and irrationally in public Friday evening. Police found him nude and on hallucinogenic drugs in the middle of a main street in Cambridge at around 10 p.m. when they made an attempt to arrest him.

Police allege that Ohene approached them with "clenched fists" as three officers surrounded him, and video footage taken by bystanders shows one officer tackling Ohene to the ground and punching him as he screams, "Help me Jesus." According to the police report, Ohene was punched five times in his stomach, and multiple witnesses as well as a photo taken by NBC News confirm that a pool of blood was left in the street after he was placed in an ambulance.

The Harvard Mathematics student, who is reportedly still recovering from his injuries in the hospital, was charged with indecent exposure, assault, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and assault and battery on ambulance personnel. As of Tuesday evening, the officers who arrested him have not been removed from duty.

Harvard president Drew Faust called the incident "upsetting" in a letter to the campus community on Monday. "A Harvard student was in obvious distress, and we need to understand how that came to be and whether we could have interceded earlier and more effectively," he said. "We have been witness to the use of force against a member of our community, which, regardless of circumstances, is upsetting and compels the search for a deeper understanding."

As The Harvard Crimson reports, the incident has further mobilized Harvard students leading the conversation on campus about police brutality against people of color. Multiple meetings were held in response over the weekend by Harvard's Black Law Students Association, college officials and faculty to discuss what the campus and community could have done to prevent the incident from happening.

"Black students on this campus are organizing," Anselm Kizza-Besigye, a Harvard student helping to organize response to the incident, told the Harvard Crimson. “I don’t know specifically what next steps are because we need to think about respecting the victim of this action, but we’re absolutely not going to let this happen idly and we’re going to keep organizing such that Harvard has to hold itself accountable for systematic failures."

Former FLOTUS Barbara Bush Has Died at 92

The Office of George H.W. Bush confirmed Tuesday evening that Barbara Bush, a former FLOTUS to the 41st President and mother to the 43rd, had died at the age of 92.

"A former First Lady of the United States of America and relentless proponent of family literacy, Barbara Pierce Bush passed away Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at the age of 92," a statement from Bush's spokesman said. "She is survived by her husband of 73 years, President George H. W. Bush; five children and their spouses, 17 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren; and her brother Scott Pierce. She was preceded in death by her second child, Pauline “Robin” Bush, and her siblings Martha Rafferty and James R. Pierce."

Following the announcement, former POTUS George W. Bush also released a statement on his mother's passing. "My dear mother has passed on at age 92," Bush said. “Laura, Barbara, Jenna, and I are sad, but our souls are settled because we know hers was. Barbara Bush was a fabulous First Lady and a woman unlike any other who brought levity, love, and literacy to millions. To us, she was so much more. Mom kept us on our toes and kept us laughing until the end. I’m a lucky man that Barbara Bush was my mother. Our family will miss her dearly, and we thank you all for your prayers and good wishes."

Over the weekend, Bush's family had announced that the former first lady's health was deteriorating following multiple health issues and hospitalizations in recent years, and that she would no longer be seeking additional treatment, instead shifting her focus to "comfort care." While the family did not specify what health issues she was being treated for, Bush had spent most of her life battling a thyroid condition and was hospitalized both for heart surgery in 2009 and pneumonia in 2013.

Known for her popularity with the American people during her time as FLOTUS, Bush was only the second woman in U.S. history (after Abigail Adams), to be both a first lady and mother to a president. She spent her time in the White House focusing on fighting illiteracy in the U.S by authoring two children's books and creating the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy.

She continued to be outspoken when it came to her views and beliefs after her husband's term was up. As the New York Times notes (and as you may remember), she had some strong *thoughts* about then-candidate Donald Trump in 2016 after he lashed out at her son Jeb Bush on the campaign trail.

"He doesn't give many answers to how he would solve problems," Bush told CNN in 2018. "He sort of makes faces and says insulting things. He’s said terrible things about women, terrible things about the military. I don’t understand why people are for him."

Bush is also believed to have differed from her husband on several policy issues including abortion and the 1972 Equal Rights Amendment. The couple had just celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary, making them the longest-married presidential couple in history.

What To Do To Feel Less Bloated

$

Being bloated, unfortunately, is not fun. You often feel heavy, lazy and reluctant to wear tight-fitting clothes when your belly is distended. Thankfully, bloating can be reduced with careful diet changes. We’ve collaborated with an expert on nutrition to give you tips to cure that bloat that keeps following you around. Read on to find out and keep yourself healthy and happy.

1. Identify the irritant and reduce your intake

The first thing you should do is find out what’s making you feel bloated. If you’re feeling the bloat in your upper stomach, it’s most likely something you ate. Susan L. Holmberg, a certified nutrition specialist, says that it’s not always obvious. “It might not be what you ate now – it could be what you ate two days ago,” she says. “Honestly, people don’t remember what they eat. Keeping a food diary is a great idea to keep track of possible irritants. The most common causes of bloat include gluten, dairy, soy, egg, peanuts, artificial sweeteners and sugar.”

Grains and gluten are often the cause of bloating. If you constantly feel bloated, try reducing your grain intake and see whether it goes away. Most importantly, avoid processed foods with high sugar content

Constipation and PMS can also cause bloating of the lower stomach. Make sure you’re going to the bathroom at least once a day. It’s important to keep your digestive system moving so there’s nothing backed up. While some of the bloating that results from PMS is unavoidable, follow the same tips below to lessen its effects.

2. Drink lots of water

As your mom always said, water is the cure to everything! As soon as you feel bloated, increase your water intake. While it might make you feel more bloated at first, the water will keep your digestive tract moving and your stool soft – which in turn will reduce your bloat in the long-term.

Monica Perez, a sophomore at Florida Atlantic University, reminds you that retaining water will exacerbate your bloat as well. “As for bloating, cut down on your salt intake because you retain more water when you eat salty foods,” she says. Great advice! Skip that bag of potato chips and reach for a bottle of water instead.

3. Eat foods with probiotics — and not unwanted sweeteners

Probiotics are popular nowadays for their digestive benefits – and for good reason. Your body contains many kinds of bacteria that must remain in balance to keep your stomach healthy and happy. Unfortunately, stress and the things we eat can disrupt our bacteria, causing bloating and other maladaptive digestive problems. Probiotics restore the good bacteria that’s necessary for your body and can definitely lessen your bloat.

While yogurt is a great source of probiotics, it can often come with unnecessary sugars. Those same sugars can, unfortunately, make you bloat. If you’re feeling a little heavy in the stomach, maybe skip that strawberry yogurt you eat every morning and take an unsweetened variety.

Holmberg also gives an alternative to yogurt. “Eat fermented foods,” she says. “They could be kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi – anything that is naturally fermented.” Kombucha is a great example of a fermented drink as well – and is readily available at your nearby supermarket. She notes that you can take probiotics in supplements, but it’s better to find them naturally. “If you would like to take supplements, it’s best to find a professional brand that needs to be refrigerated and has at least ten to fourteen different types of bacteria,” she says.

Besides eating probiotics themselves, you can also eat foods that help your body create its own probiotics. These foods, which contain probiotic fibers, include vegetables like jicama, radishes, onions and carrots.

4. Take a digestive enzyme

If you find a certain food is causing you to bloat whenever you eat it, you might not have the enzyme that breaks down that food in your body. For example, lactose intolerance is quite common — and sometimes, people don’t even know they have it.

“Many people become lactose intolerant over the course of their life,” Holmberg says. “When people are lactose intolerant, they don’t have the lactase enzyme, which dissolves the sugar in milk.” If you’re bloating often because of dairy products, you can start drinking milk with the lactase enzyme added — that way, your body can degrade the sugars in the milk. It’s harmless and inexpensive to see if you’re intolerant to a certain food. Speak with your doctor if you suspect you’re intolerant and they’ll definitely provide you with specific enzymes that can help cure your bloat when you eat that food.

5. Don’t neglect your workout routine when you’re bloated

Working out is probably the last thing on your mind when you’re bloated, but it can help more than you think. “During my worst PMS, I went to the gym anyway,” Holmberg says. “I’ve had some of the most memorably good workouts when I had PMS. Movement at all will help mediate the symptoms of bloat.” Even if you feel like curling up and staying in bed when your stomach is heavy, get out and keep moving. In turn, it will help keep your digestive system moving as well.

Unfortunately, many of these methods take a while to implement. If there’s that party you’ve been looking forward to tonight and you really want to feel better within a day, Holmberg gives you a simple trick. “Drop all the starch and carbs out of your diet and take a walk,” she says. “Natural diuretics like watermelon and asparagus will help as well.” By losing all these heavy foods and getting your body moving, you’ll begin to feel better immediately. Over the long-term, take a look back at the previous steps to eliminate bloat permanently. Good luck, collegiettes!

HC Wake-Up Call: One Person Is Dead After an Engine on a Southwest Flight Exploded, Washington D.C. May Lower the Voting Age to 16 & Starbucks to Close 8,000 Stores For A Day of Racial-Bias Training

Good morning Her Campus! With a break-neck news cycle, there is no possible way for you to stay on top of every story that comes across your feeds—we’re all only human, after all.

But, life comes at you fast. So grab a cup of coffee and settle in for this quick and dirty guide to stories you might’ve been sleeping on (like, literally. It’s early.)

1 Person Is Dead After an Engine on a Southwest Flight Exploded Midair

One person was killed Tuesday morning on a Southwest Airlines flight from New York Laguardia Airport to Dallas when one of the plane's engines exploded midair, the New York Times reports. The engine exploded around a half-hour into the flight, shattering a window and prompting the plane to make an emergency landing. One woman was partially sucked outside the plane upon impact and was hit with shrapnel from the engine, requiring flight attendants and passengers to attempt to treat her serious injuries as the plane made its emergency landing.

“I think, like most passengers, I thought I was going to die," Matt Tranchin, a passenger on the flight, told the Times. "It’s a wild experience. It’s not a couple minutes of freaking out and frantically saying goodbye; it’s 25 minutes of sustained fear that this was the end."

Authorities later confirmed that one person, identified as Jennifer Riordan from Albuquerque, New Mexico, had died in the accident and seven others were being treated for injuries.

Washington D.C. May Lower the Voting Age to 16

Legislation has been introduced into the Washington, D.C. council to lower the voting age to 16 in the nation's capital, according to USA Today. Charles Allen, the council member responsible for the measure, says he was inspired by the young people who recently protested in D.C. as part of the March for Our Lives. Because D.C. is treated like a state in presidential elections, it would effectively become the first state to allow 16 and 17-year-olds to vote for the next president. The legislation reportedly has the support of seven of 13 members of the D.C. council, which says it plans to hold a vote on the matter before the end of the year.

On May 29, Starbucks Will Close 8,000 Stores for Racial-Bias Training

In the wake of an incident over the weekend in which one Starbucks location in Philadelphia called the police to arrest two black men who were merely sitting in the store waiting for their friend, Starbucks has announced that it will close 8,000 of its locations on May 29 in order to host racial-bias training for over 175,000 employees.

"I've spent the last few days in Philadelphia with my leadership team listening to the community, learning what we did wrong and the steps we need to take to fix it," Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson said in a statement to CNN. "While this is not limited to Starbucks, we're committed to being a part of the solution. Closing our stores for racial bias training is just one step in a journey that requires dedication from every level of our company and partnerships in our local communities."

How to Deal When You Lose Your Cool at Work

$
0
0

Humans are emotional beings. And yet, it is difficult to understand how we process emotions and the consequences they can produce. When emotions get the best of us, it can be embarrassing or shameful, especially when our peers at work are privy to an outburst.

Dr. Don Greene, a peak performance psychologist, says, “There are innumerable sources of occupation stress,” listing deadlines, conflicts with coworkers or clients, dissatisfaction with your type of work or pay and lack of support as some of the issues we face on a daily basis that could bring someone to the edge.

A meltdown at work can take different forms: you could burst into tears in front of your boss, smash a fist against the wall after dealing with a particularly difficult client or use some not-so-polite language in conversation with that coworker you just can’t get along with. Feeling a loss of control, having an inability to prioritize or a finding difficulty dealing with personal issues could send you over the edge.

What happens when we lose control of our emotions in a professional setting? Most importantly, how do we salvage a professional, dependable reputation in the workplace after losing our cool?

What does a meltdown look like?

Most times, a meltdown at work is not the result of one, isolated stressful event. Rather, it is more of a “straw that broke the camel’s back” sequence where other events have been building up on your psyche until you simply snap.

When we get upset with family or friends for small misgivings, they’ll most likely forgive and forget. When we get snippy with the barista for messing up our much-needed coffee after a sleepless night, we’ll most likely never see them again. But when our work environment becomes the setting for an emotional slip-up, and our colleagues the recipients, we can find ourselves in unpleasant, startling situations.

Related: 5 Ways to Handle Workplace Conflict

For Megan Lawler, who works in advertising in Chicago, her built-up emotions became way too overbearing during a standard meeting.

“I had a pretty bad breakdown at work, the kind when you're holding back tears and silently taking deep breaths in the middle of a meeting,” she says. “My team was being overworked and under-appreciated and our superiors kept piling more work on top of us. My growing to-do list was staring me in the face, and I basically burst.”

Annie*, a post-grad who works in entry-level accounts receivables, also provides an example of how constant issues at work can weigh on you to the point of serious discontent. Finding herself wildly dissatisfied with her current job and experiencing a level of discomfort at work most days prompts her to seek a sense of calm at a coffee shop nearby her office.

Her unhappiness, stemming from different aspects of her work environment, makes it difficult for Annie to get through a day without becoming overcome with anxiety.

“My coworkers—an entirely male staff except for one other female—are crude, I am so bored and I have the most passive boss of all time,” she says. “To fight through it, I remove myself from the space to walk to that coffee shop and remind myself that this is only temporary.”

If you find yourself in the midst or aftermath of a meltdown, it can leave you feeling powerless, ashamed and incapable of bouncing back. Dealing with the ramifications, then, is crucial to finding your way back to a sense of professionalism and productivity.

So, I broke down…Now what?

How you react to what happened is ultimately going to determine the future of your reputation at work. While avoiding any acknowledgement whatsoever may seem ideal—an out of sight, out of mind attitude can be attractive when you’re dealing with any level of humiliation— the best approach is to face it head on.

Recognizing your triggers in the first step in determining how to acknowledge them at work. Greene, who has 32 years of experience coaching performers and athletes to be their best, recommends taking into account any personal troubles that may determine how you approach the issue.

“The quality of your personal relationships and weekend activities outside of work can dramatically affect your emotional and mental energy during the week,” he says. “Your relationships and activities away from the job can replenish your energy or drain it.”

Personal troubles, then, can bleed into the workplace and find you more prone to breaking down.

“I have noticed that if I am fighting with my boyfriend, had a bad night or left my apartment a mess that I have a notably worse day at work,” Annie says.

Should at-home troubles be the case, discussing the episode with a superior is a route that may seem scary, but could ultimately be beneficial to how your work week is handled from that point on.

Margaret Gauthier, a third year student at Western University in London, Ontario, who has been working in the food industry for three years, had a rocky start when she first began her job. Having a hard time balancing work, life and school and finding herself on the brink of a meltdown, she finally decided to speak to her boss and quit her job.

What happened when approaching her supervisor, though, helped her carry on and made her more productive not only at work but in other aspects of her daily life. By working with her to create a new, more manageable schedule, Margaret’s supervisor was supportive and gave her the ability to succeed.

“Sometimes it’s worth it to talk to the scary person in charge. They might end up being one of your biggest supporters,” Margaret says. “I found it was helpful just to admit that I needed help, or that I wasn't sure what to do or how to do it.”

Should your meltdown stem from more in-house grievances, you’ll still want to tackle consequences directly. Dr. Greene suggests planning an honest, rehearsed conversation punctuated by an apology to address what led up to your lapse in control.

“You could explain the events that lead up to the meltdown and how that made you feel and react the way that you did,” he says. “Make sure that you inform them about what actions you will be taking so that it will never happen again.”

Especially if your emotional lapse happens in front of colleagues, acknowledging that you slipped up, why and assuring that you’ll get it under control is what those around us want to hear. You’re surrounded by your coworkers and supervisors for the better part of every day; trusting those you work with to hear you out when you take responsibility is the first step to keeping your wits about you next time.

To approach the consequences of your meltdown with others besides your superiors, owning the perspective and taking control of your reputation of the spectacle has been to known to be successful.

A study out of Harvard found that if you define the meltdown on your own terms, your peers will find a way to maintain respect. It’s called “emotion reframing,” in which showcasing a dedication to the job can sway the opinion of anyone who observed your moment of weakness.

During five experiments, the study found that colleagues considered those who suffered a meltdown as less competent at their jobs. However, the results showed that by attributing the incident to an issue of passion for your work rather than distress, observers were more willing to forgive and forget and maintained a more positive opinion of the employee.

Whichever way you approach the situation post-meltdown, however, apologizing and owning your issues is the best way to move past the episode.

Don’t do it again!

You’ve had a meltdown at work, you’ve addressed the consequences with your peers—don’t just sit back and wait for it to happen again.

When unhappy at work, not only is your emotional balance at stake, but freaking out in the workplace limits your ability to be productive. As Megan found, letting her emotions get the best of her made it difficult to keep up with her work, a cycle that threatened to continue repeating itself if not dealt with.

“It hurt me, because I was totally zoned out during the meeting. I wasn’t able to pay attention because I was too busy having an internal panic attack, and I wasn't able to fully participate or offer my insights like I normally would,” she says.

To prevent future meltdowns, it’s a good idea to take some steps to evaluate yourself and your surroundings. Barring a deeper emotional instability, addressing what prompted your meltdown—whether it be work-life balance, your work environment, or other triggers—is a necessary means to stay productive.

Once you identify what is haunting you in and out of work, you can take precautions to avoid a meltdown the next time something flares up. Becoming self-aware of your worries, and subsequently coming up with appropriate responses to your stressors before getting to work, makes for a decent work environment for everyone involved.

Staying healthy is also key to keeping a handle on your daily stress. Megan, for example, found that lack of sleep was making it hard for her to appropriately handle her workload.

“When you're working late nights and have to get up early to put in another full day, you become less and less able to deal with the stress properly,” she says.

Meditation, Megan says, has been instrumental in providing some balance to her work day, saying that “it energizes you and focuses your mind.”

Dr. Greene, in fact, agrees that on the brink of a meltdown, finding a way to center yourself will help to ward off a debilitating loss of control. He proposes calm ways to keep your emotions in check.

“If possible, remove yourself from the immediate situation. Try to get to a quiet, private place. Take several slow deep breaths focused only on your breathing,” says Greene. “Recall being in one of your favorite places or doing what you love for a few seconds.”

Annie, similarly, finds that she has adapted to her own disadvantageous workplace surroundings as best she can to ensure a sense of productivity and professionalism without feeling so powerless.

“I really pride myself on being level-headed and professional, but I know that at times when I feel so isolated and unappreciated at work, I start to become really introverted and stop making an effort to reach out to my coworkers and boss,” she says. “In order to keep my feelings in check and my work productive with my colleagues, I have made a point to speak clearly, concisely and only about the task at hand to avoid any sort of drama or sidetracking.”

Seeking realistic solutions and knowing when to shrug it off, says Dr. Greene, will put you in a better place mentally and professionally.

“You could tell yourself to find a functional coping strategy, a better job, or that it is too important to take too seriously. A sense of humor can be a great help in challenging situations,” he says.

Annie says that prioritizing work and keeping a manageable to-do list is important to be able to maintain a healthy work day.

“It has become so important to me to have a sacred, calm, and love-filled personal life to help make my work life more manageable,” says Annie.

Workplace meltdowns are not the end of the world—or your career. In the end, we’re all human, and the going gets rough. Keep in mind the importance of staying transparent and humble if you ever find yourself on the wrong end of a workplace meltdown and seek healthy, responsive ways to help yourself avoid them altogether.

This New Disney Channel Promo Is About To Give You All The Feels

Ultimately, which celebrities you stan can break up friendships—because nobody wants to stay friends with someone who doesn’t stan Zendaya. Thankfully, there are a few things that virtually everyone can stan. After all, the Disney Channel is basically a universal fandom. While Lizzie McGuire (i.e. Hilary Duff) helped us revitalize our obsession with the Disney Channel last year, this new promo for the channel is making us feel extra nostalgic.

As E! News reports, this new Disney Channel Promo video basically recaps our favorite Disney stars. While the video incorporates some series footage, it also include some adorable outtakes. (Also, this throwback video just reminded us that Cole and Dylan Sprouse need to star in another production together, ASAP.)

The clip features a plethora of Disney Channel stars, including Dove Cameron, Sofia Carson, Demi Lovato, Miley Cyrus, Hilary Duff, Selena Gomez, Cole Sprouse, Dylan Sprouse, the cast of Descendants 2, the Jonas Brothers, Madison Hu, and the cast of Stuck in the Middle. (Just to name a few.)

Nevertheless, it seems as though this promo video was meant as a way to celebrate the Disney Channel’s 35th anniversary, which is today, April 18. Beyond proving that it’s totally acceptable for you to give yourself a present on your birthday, it has us wondering what captivating shows Disney Channel will produce 35 years from now.

Though Disney Channel launched in 1983 (with a rather retro vibe nonetheless), the channel has curated binge-worthy television shows before binge-watching was a universal way to procrastinate hobby. As Disney Channel is gearing up to create a live-action Kim Possible movie, we can’t help but hope that a reboot of The Proud Family is on the horizon.

Aside from celebrity, the channel’s noteworthy accomplishment over the past 35 years, the whole video is basically just a yearbook of all the past and present Disney Channel stars. While we don’t know what we did to deserve this video, we’re so glad that Disney Channel reminded us just how much we love Disney.

My time in Paris with EF International Language Campuses has been life-changing thus far. Even though two weeks isn't enough time to learn a language, I've been grateful for this opportunity to learn French and spend my time here living like a local. I want to share five reasons why you should study abroad with EF International Language Campuses.

1. You get the option to live with a host family or in an EF residence.

Again, I mentioned I lived with a host family that I absolutely loved. Even though I couldn't speak French, the host family and I were still able to communicate with a little bit of English and a lot of Google TranslateAll jokes aside – I arrived in Paris with no knowledge of the language and loved living with a host family.

2. You meet so many new friends.

If you're friends with me on Instagram, you've probably seen me with a lot of new faces. Since new classes start every Monday, you'll be constantly meeting new people (even if you're studying abroad only for two weeks). And the best part? You get to travel to all the amazing places in Paris with them.

3. You can travel to Disneyland Paris, Amsterdam, Louvre Museum, and more by signing up through the activities in the EF app or online.

Some of the activities are even discounted tickets, and you don't have to worry about going alone!

4. You get to add a new language to your resume.

It might even come in handy when you're applying for jobs, or a position that requires you to know the language. Better yet, you might even be able to travel back to the country you studied abroad in.

5. You don't have to be in high school or college to apply for EF.

I met a lot of classmates who were older and from different countries who just wanted to learn the language. And that's okay. You don't have to be a certain age to study abroad.

I think the main reason why I really loved being a part of EF was because I never had the chance to study abroad in college. All of this was new to me. I wasn't sure what I would be expecting, and I saw it as a challenge. I flew to Paris with a positive mindset, and even though I was very jet-lagged the first few days, I wanted to make the most of it.

Not to mention, Paris is so beautiful that there were many times where I felt like I was living in a dream.

5 Proven Ways to Get Him to Text Back

$

In today’s day and age, a simple conversation over text can be the end-all-be-all of a relationship. How crazy is that? Whether you like texting or not, it’s undeniable that it’s a main form of communication. So what happens when the guy you like won’t text back? We’ve talked to collegiettes with experience to let you in on some texting tricks that will have him typing back in no time.

1. Play hard to get

It’s a classic relationship rule: If you make yourself too attainable, the chase isn’t as fun. According to Courtney Martere, a senior at Marist College, playing hard to get has gotten her the most texts back. “Okay, maybe it's not super fun to do this, but I guess it's how the modern dating scene works,” she says. “Wait a little while to answer when he texts you…You may even try ignoring him as a test to see if he'd send that double text through, but it depends how hard you want to play the ‘hard to get’ game.” How long are you willing to wait before you text back? This game may not be for everyone, but if he plays it, so should you.

2. Send pictures/memes/emojis

A classic “what’s up?” text may not be enough nowadays. Ashley Drayton, a graduate of Georgia State University, suggests sending pictures or memes to keep him on his toes. “I would say my experience with this would be if you're having an interesting or funny conversation and he's intrigued, you send him cute/random pictures (of yourself too) or memes, and flirting with him always works,” she says.

Chelsea Jackson, a junior at Iowa State University, has similar advice. “I usually text using GIFs or memes, which tends to get guys to text back. And if they can't hold a full conversation using only meme, then they aren't worth my time.” Amen, sister!

Matt Milich, a senior at the University of Rhode Island, says emojis get him texting back. “If she sends emojis or like smiley faces, it usually means she’s into you.” Send him a GIF from a show you know he likes, a selfie of you at the pool or the heart eyes emoji. It’s hard not to respond to that.

3. Ask questions

Conversations tend to die down when there’s nothing left to talk about (naturally). To avoid that, Courtney suggests to “leave the conversation open with questions or ask him for advice, so if he doesn't respond it's just plain rude.” We love this advice.

Dajin Kim, a sophomore of the University of Texas at Austin, agrees: “I usually ask questions to make sure they know I'm interested in what they're saying! Also, he's just rude if he leaves you hanging on a question, right? If it seems like he's answering very dryly to those then I would stop, but if he seems to be asking questions back and elaborating that's always a good sign.” Ask him what his plans are for the night or what he thinks of something going on—hopefully he’ll start firing questions back at you.

4. Play a game

It may bring you back to your sixth grade days, but playing a game over text can actually be a great way to get him responding and learn more about him. “Playing a game like 20 questions is the perfect way to make sure he texts back,” says Shelby*, a senior at Iona College. “It allows you to learn more about each other and heat things up a little bit, too.” If you hit a lull in the conversation, say something like, “Wanna play 20 questions? Ask me anything.” This will get his mind turning. You’ll definitely lose track of how many you’ve asked, but asking things like, “What’s your favorite sex position?” will have him going crazy.

5. Double text

Sometimes, guys need you to make it extremely obvious that you’re interested in them. And sometimes, people just forget to text back! If it’s been a while and your guy hasn’t responded, text him again. “If you have to go to drastic measures the ‘send multiple texts’ tactic works,” Ashley says. When he sees your name pop up again, you’ll be fresh in his mind.

“If they double text I'll feel bad, so I'll hit her back,” says Drew Dembek, a senior at James Madison University. Just don’t go overboard by sending back-to-back-to-back texts if he doesn’t reply.

Ah, the wonderful world of texting. If you’re finding that your texts aren’t getting replies, try some of these tips. Just remember not to take texting too seriously. Some people just don’t like or “aren’t good at it!” Best of luck, collegiettes!

McKayla Maroney Says She Was Molested 'Hundreds of Times' By Larry Nassar

McKayla Maroney, a US Olympic gold medalist, said in an interview with NBC News that she was molested “hundreds of times” by Larry Nassar, beginning with their first encounter.

“He told me he was going to do a checkup on me, and that was the first day I was abused,” said Maroney, according to People.“[It was] every time I saw him.”

People obtained their quotes from a clip released ahead of the full interview. “He said that nobody would understand this and the sacrifice that it takes to get to the Olympics, so you can’t tell people this,” she said about Nassar.

People also reported that Maroney began to questions if her career in gymnastics was “really even worth it” because of the assault she faced from Nassar.

Maroney originally signed a nondisclosure agreement saying she would not discuss the allegations, but her attorney filed a lawsuit against USA Gymnastics for hiding her allegations, according to Sports Illustrated

Nassar has since been sentenced up to 175 years on state charges of sexual assault, 40 to 125 years on three counts of sexual assault, and 60 years on child pornography charges, Sports Illustrated reported.

Celebrity Fitness Trainer Anna Kaiser Discusses Her Busy Morning Routine & How to Stay Motivated (Exclusive Q&A)

What do Shakira, Hilary Duff, Karlie Kloss, Kelly Ripa and Sarah Jessica Parker all have in common? They're trained by world-renowned fitness expert, dancer and choreographer, Anna Kaiser, of course! With knowledge and experience in professional dance and sports medicine, she has a reputation for producing results in a super friendly and fun way. Kaiser is also the founder and CEO of AKT, a recognizable brand and chain of luxury fitness studios located in New York City, East Hampton and Connecticut.

Her Campus recently chatted with Kaiser about her favorite new breakfast item, Pure Protein breakfast bars, what she recommends for busy college women who can't find time to do an intense workout every single day and more.

Her Campus:  Let’s start with the beginning of the day, what are your mornings like?

Anna Kaiser: Oh man, I am the mom to a very active one-year-old, so if he's up, I'm running at like 110 miles per hour. Then, I'm off to juggle meetings and train clients and teach classes and create content, so my day is packed—and I need to be ready for anything. The most important thing is to make sure I get a really fantastic breakfast with protein and tons of nutrients that's going to help fuel my morning.

HC: When you’re shopping, what are the most important things you look for in a breakfast?

AK: First, it needs to taste good, right? So that we make that sure we reach for it. Second thing is that it's nutritionally complete, so I know that I'm getting everything I need for whatever's thrown my way. Then, it makes it feel good! It gives me the energy I need to be able to do anything. Recently, I discovered these Pure Protein breakfast bars. They're delicious and come in four flavors—my favorite is the blueberry oatmeal. My husband's favorite is the chocolate almond. It tastes like dessert, but I don't tell him it has 12 grams of protein in it and it's so good for you. It has really good ingredients, like oats and flax seeds and chia seeds and quinoa, which are important to me as a mom and a trainer. I know I'm putting really good food in my body.

HC:  When it comes to fitness, is there an optimum time of day for your workouts?

AK: I really love working out first thing in the morning. I make sure I make time for myself and get those good endorphins flowing, and I feel more focused and alive and excited for my day. But the most important part of that is the 45-minute window after you finish that workout, so that you make sure you get enough protein to help muscles recover and help build new lean muscle and fuel your day, so that you don't get that post-workout crash. Recently, I was out in Barcelona with Shakira. She's going back on her world tour, and I wanted to bring treats with me because she has a crazy sweet tooth. I found these Pure Protein birthday cake bars. They actually taste like the birthday cake with the sprinkles in it, and they have sprinkles on top. They have 20 grams of protein and are really low in sugar. Whether you're having a sweet tooth craving or it's right after your workout, you can just throw that in your bag and have it available wherever you are—traveling, jumping from home to work. It's an amazing trick.

HC: What advice would you give busy young women in college who can't seem to find time for a full-fledged workout every day?

AK: It's not about how long you're working out, it's about staying consistent. I have an app called AKT On Demand, and we have all sorts of workouts on that app, ranging from 10 minutes to 90 minutes. Regardless of where you are, you can work out with the amount of time that you have and just stay consistent. It's just about doing a little bit five or six days a week. It could be 10 minutes. As for nutrition, I remember when I was in college that it's tough to find good food, and you're constantly being offered alcohol and pizza and all these things that may throw you off track. It's great to have options to take with you, like the birthday cake bar, to help keep you on track and help you keep you moving toward those fitness goals.

HC: Sometimes the hardest part can be getting started, how do you stay motivated?

AK: Find something that you love to do! I love to dance and look forward to my AKT workouts every day. But whether it's running, mountain climbing, whatever that is, find something that you love because it's really about showing up. Showing up is 80 percent of the game, and then once you're there, we take care of it. It's the same thing with food. You want something that tastes good and makes you feel good, and can take with you anywhere.

HC: Balance and moderation are key! Where can people go for additional information?

AK: All of these products are available on Amazon.com, and for more information on Pure Protein, you can head to PureProtein.com.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo Moves To Return Voting Rights To 35,000 Paroled Felons

Governor Andrew Cuomo wants to grant felons on parole in New York the right to vote – and he won’t take “no” for an answer, he announced Wednesday at the annual National Action Network convention. The move was not supported by the State Legislature, according to the Hill, but Cuomo said he will sign an executive order.

Doing so would restore voting rights for more than 35,000 people, the New York Times reported. According to Mother Jones, 48 percent of people affected by New York’s disenfranchisement laws are African-Americans.

“In this state, when you’re released from prison and you’re on parole, you still don’t have the right to vote,” Cuomo said in his speech. “Now how can that be? You did your time. You paid your debt. You’re released, but you still don’t have the right to vote.”

Wikimedia Commons

This announcement comes one day after a new election poll showed a decline in Cuomo’s lead over former Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixon, who is Cuomo’s main opponent in New York’s Democratic gubernatorial nomination.

In a Democratic-leaning state with strict voting laws, criminal justice reform is a significant aspect of Nixon’s campaign – and she has criticized Cuomo for his record on it. Cuomo’s aides said the timing of the announcement was irrelevant, the New York Times reported.

Voting in New York isn’t exactly easy. Though it’s a Democratic state, it’s also home to some pretty restrictive voting laws that don’t allow early voting or Election Day registration. At least 18 other states and Washington D.C. already allow felons on parole to vote, the New York Times reported, and Democratic lawmakers in other states are looking at making the same changes. Voting rights activists have been waiting quite a while for this day to come in New York.

Grubhub and Venmo have partnered up to make splitting the delivery bill a lot easier. Now, you can split your bill on Grubhub, Seamless and Eat24 right after you order, according to Bustle.

For this new feature to work, users must have both the Venmo and Grubhub apps on their phones. Venmo is now listed among the other pay options, and it opens the app to split the bill or request money from other users at checkout,The Verge reported.

A Venmo spokesperson said to Mashable that, “Given that so many food-related payments occur on Venmo (Pizza is the most popular emoji on Venmo), this was a natural integration so Grubhub users could more easily split and share the costs of their group meals on Venmo.”

Now, your friends have no excuse not to pay you back for the meal and you don’t have to chase them to get your money back.

First Poster For 'The Bachelorette' Has Been Revealed & I Am Not Ready

#BachelorNation, get ready because we officially have our first look at season 14 of The Bachelorette!

Host Chris Harrison revealed the key art via Twitter on Wednesday, showing a gorgeous Becca Kufrin along with the quote, “Let’s do the damn thing.”

According to People, Becca's season has been in production for about a month, and photos of the cast filming everywhere from Los Angeles to the Bahamas have been surfacing.

The world sympathized with Becca during Arie Luyendyk Jr.’s season of The Bachelor. After proposing to her on the finale, Arie changed his mind a month later and shockingly broke things off in front of the cameras. While he proposed to runner-up Lauren Burnham, Becca was given the role of The Bachelorette.

“She’s very resilient. As we’ve seen, she takes everything in stride,” a source told Us Weekly. “She also has a very eclectic taste in men so you’re going to see a lot of very different men fighting for her heart.”

At least by the time this season begins, I have time to watch it because *sings* summer break!

Season 14 of The Bachelorette premieres Monday, May 28, at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.

I Tried AcneFree's Spot Clearing System for an Entire Month & Here's My Skin Reaction Journey

$

Like 99 percent of the world's population, I don't have perfectly radiant, baby-smooth skin. Quite the contrary; I struggled especially with oil-slick skin and blackheads galore in high school. Now that I've made it to my junior year of college, I'd classify my skin as combination. I tend to get a little shiny along my t-zone as the day goes on, but the rest of my face is actually prone to dryness now. In fact, I'd say my skin is more on the dry side, especially during the colder months of the year. While my skin's made much improvement over the years, I still wasn't completely satisfied. So when I was offered the chance to try AcneFree's skin-clearing system, I jumped at the opportunity.

Here's what my skin looked like before starting AcneFree (please excuse the bedhead). I have a few noticeable spots, a smattering of blackheads on my nose and chin, and a general dullness I could probably attribute to the period that had just started. Nothing too severe, but definitely not skin #goalz by any stretch of the imagination. So, let's get started then!

First Impressions

In my package, I received the Sensitive Skin 24 Hour Acne Clearing System, which contained a cleanser, toner, and spot treatment lotion. I also received the Daily Skin Therapy Acne Pads and the Body Clearing Acne Spray. Everything was packaged simply, but each product was sturdy and colorful, which is a big must for me. Overall, the products claim to heal acne in 1-3 days and be “gentler than Proactiv.”

1. Sensitive Skin 24 Hour Acne Clearing System ($15.99 at Target)

The cleanser was gentle and smelled super nice, a little bit like oatmeal. It didn’t foam up as much as I wanted it to, so I had a hard time judging how much to use. The toner felt nice on the skin, especially after an intense workout, but overall I didn't notice it doing much for my skin, other than basic cleaning.

The spot treatment lotion and I ended up having a bit of a love/hate relationship. While it worked wonders for drying up spots lightning fast, it left those spots dry and flaky. Even after moisturizing and applying a hydrating primer, my makeup still flaked off around those spots when I chose to wear foundation or concealer.

2. Daily Skin Therapy Acne Pads ($6.99 at Target)

These smelled heavenly, just like citrus fruit! I ended up using one pad each night before applying a bit of spot treatment. They always left my face feeling tingly and super clean afterward. I’d recommend that those with extra sensitive skin be gentle with this product - sometimes the tingly-ness got a little uncomfortable.

3. Body Clearing Acne Spray (10.99 at Target)

This product I ended up using the least. The smell wasn't fabulous, and itt felt harsh on my skin. However, I imagine if you’re an athlete or someone who spends a lot of time in a sports bra, this spray could come quite in handy!

Related: 10 Go-To Skincare Products for Sensitive Skin

And here’s my skin after about a month of using this system! I’ve got on mascara and tinted lip balm, but no foundation or concealer, and I have to say, my skin looks a little shiny, but it's pretty clear (aside from a stubborn bump on my cupid's bow). My skin definitely felt a lot dryer while I used these products, so ultimately I was happy to go back to my previous moisturizer and plain ol’ Dove soap.

Final Verdict

While my skin didn't 100 percent love the AcneFree system, I was pleasantly surprised with just how quickly the spot treatment lotion and acne healing pads shrunk down my stubborn hormonal spots. If you're someone who doesn't have dry, sensitive skin, I'd definitely recommend you give at least the spot treatment lotion a shot. And if you suffer from super oily skin like I did in high school, this system would probably work miracles.
