7 Bad Habits That Are Ruining Your Hair

$

Hair is amazing. It can be dyed any color under the sun, twisted, braided, pulled back or styled with heat tools. However, our hair is quite delicate, and not all hair is created the same. No matter how nice we might think we are to it, there are some bad habits out there that are ruining the health and luster of our tresses, good hair day or not. So we talked to Katie Bailey, a hair stylist at Serendipity Salon in Geneva, Illinois, as well as a few collegiettes to discuss the seven bad habits you should scratch to maintain the health of your lovely locks!

1. Using your heat tools on the wrong setting

Heat tools have the magical ability to make our hair as big and curly or pin-straight as we please, but you may want to think twice before clamping down. Just ask Dania De La Hoya, a sophomore at Illinois State University, who shared her horror story on the damage of our heat tool habits. “I completely fried my hair two years ago by straightening it all the time on the highest setting,” Dania says. “I got an expensive new straightener and was obsessed until I realized even protective sprays didn’t offer full protection against that level of heat.”

Although heat tools usually come with instructions on what temperature setting you should use on your hair, it’s tempting to crank it all the way up in order to get the job done faster. “I ended up having to chop most of my hair off and it’s grown back much healthier now that I’ve cut down on the heat!” Dania explains.

Stylist Katie Bailey stresses the importance of using the right heat setting. “If you have fine, damaged or bleached-out hair, you’ll want to use a lower heat setting for sure,” Bailey explains. “Always use a thermal protectant before styling with heat. Ladies with curly or coarse hair should definitely protect their hair, considering that they usually have to apply heat for longer. It’s okay for those with a thicker type of hair to use a higher heat setting to get the job done, just remember to use protectant!”

If you’re in the habit of not only using heat tools daily, but also having them on the highest setting when you really shouldn’t, you’ll definitely want to kick that to the curb. It’s getting hot in here, so turn down your heat tools!

2. Forgetting to use heat protectant products

As Bailey suggests, once you’ve finally nailed the proper temperature setting on your heat tools, you’ll want to grab for a protective spray next. Lena Gilmour, a sophomore at Queen’s University, points out that “forgetting to use a protective spray before using heated styling tools" is a major no-no!

So with so many heat-protectant sprays and creams out there, which one should you choose? “Anything water-soluble is best because it's not going to dry your hair out,” says Bailey. “A thermal lotion is probably the best option because it has conditioning benefits as well. At my salon, I use serums and lotion because they’re not only protecting your hair but they’re also conditioning it. Sprays don't have that conditioning element,” Bailey explains.

Although it may be tempting to skip that step in order to cut down on time and save money on product, your hair will end up paying for it. Heat protectants coat hair and create a protective barrier, so just imagine what’s happening to your hair when nothing is standing in the way between your delicate strands and triple-digit temps from your blow dryers and hair straighteners!

3. Sleeping with your hair in a wet bun

Sleeping with your hair pulled up tight or in a bun is nice for staying cool and keeping strands off your face (especially when it’s not shampoo day), but it may be doing more harm than good—especially if it is shampoo day. “I have a really bad habit of falling asleep with my wet hair up in a messy bun,” says Molly Crum, a senior at James Madison University, “but this really damages my hair. The tight elastic band leaves a mark and I always wake up with my hair in a huge tangled mess!”

Keeping your hair up at night and away from your face is said to be good for your skin, but not so much for your hair, Bailey explains. “Anytime you put your hair back, especially when it's wet, can cause breakage because your hair bonds are really weak when your hair is wet.”

As a busy collegiette it’s easy to fall into the habit of tying-up your wet hair and hitting the sheets, but we must urge you to resist!

4. Not brushing properly

A lot more goes into brushing your hair than you may think. If you find yourself always reaching for a regular paddle brush and getting rough with tangles, through wet or dry hair, you may be in for some major breakage. Norris Goldflies, a junior at The University of Illinois at Chicago admits that her bad habits include brushing her hair when it’s wet and “finger combing it and basically ripping it if I hit a tangle.” Yikes!

If you have a lot of tangles, yanking a brush through them is obviously not good. A wide toothed comb for wet or dry hair and a wet brush for just-washed hair is good,” says Bailey. “Paddle brushes aren't good because they have way more bristles that are stiff and create tension. They rip through the tangles as opposed to just getting through the tangles. They’re just going to break your hair.” If you find yourself cleaning clumps of hair out of your paddle brush often, now you know why!

5. Wrapping your hair up in a towel

Wrapping up your hair after a shower seems like a quick fix to getting rid of the moisture, but curly-haired beauties should especially be wary of this, Bailey explains.

“Wrapping your hair in a towel can cause a lot of frizz, particularly for people with curly hair,” says Bailey. “I tell my curly-haired clients not to put their hair up, as the towel pulls out the curls and at the scalp and causes the hair to become frizzy. Gently scrunch your hair with a towel instead of wrapping it to remove moisture without disrupting your curls.” The extra effort will be so worth it!

6. Not using a clarifying shampoo

If you style your hair often and frequently use product, you may notice that your hair seems limp and dry after a while. If you’re not in the habit of thoroughly shampooing your hair and using a clarifying shampoo, then your hair might be in for a bad time.

“If you use a lot of product in your hair, it’s important to use a clarifying shampoo maybe twice a month,” says Bailey. “Product can create a layer on your hair that doesn’t allow for moisture and can dry your hair out, causing breakage and brittle hair (even the serums, creams and sprays!). A lot of product creates buildup in your hair, especially if you aren't shampooing that well.” Get in the habit of using a clarifying shampoo to ensure that you’re getting all the gunk out!

7. Picking split ends

Have you ever played around with your hair after not getting it trimmed for a while, only to find that you’ve got split ends? And maybe even some of your split ends have split ends? And all you want to do is mess with them even further? Yup. That may be the worst habit of them all.

“You know when a strand of hair gets that white dot before it breaks?” Norris asks. “I love breaking that piece of hair off.” Although messing with split ends does sometimes bring some weird sort of satisfaction, you are your hair’s worst enemy here. “Just don’t do it!” says Bailey. All your hair wants to do is love you (except on those evil, frizzy bad hair days), so we should give it all the love we have back.

These seven habits may sound really hard to break at first, but to quote High School Musical, “we’re all in this together,” girl. It will all be worth it in the end knowing that you’re doing everything you can do keep your hair looking gorgeous and healthy!

5 Ways to Style Your Leather Jacket

$

We all have a leather jacket sitting in our closet somewhere, and if you’re anything like me, it’s been abandoned for a while. However, although a nice leather or faux leather jacket is a basic for most girls, there are still plenty of ways to make it your own. It’s time to give new life to your leather jacket.

1. Denim and leather: a match made in heaven

Denim and leather are the ultimate dynamic duo. Denim brings a cool, fresh feel to the edgy punch of a leather jacket. Pairing denim, such as a chambray shirt, under your leather jacket brings something light to the look and can be personalized with your favorite denim wash. This look is perfect for running your daily errands, but you could also tuck your denim into a mini skirt for the perfect night out.

2. Graphically chic

Everyone loves a graphic tee, including our favorite celebs such as Kendall Jenner and her older sis Kim Kardashian. These edgy tees go perfectly with any leather jacket, creating a look no one will want to mess with. Adding a messy pony to the equation only make this look more badass.

3. Patch it up

Adding personalized pins and patches to your leather jacket is the perfect way to make it not-so-basic anymore. After all, no one wants to have the same style as everyone else. Patches and pins can be purchased at craft stores and are a super easy way to put more you into your style.

4. Say what you want

Much like pins and patches, texts and quotes are another easy way to personalize your leather jacket. Pick your favorite quote, line, word or letter and add it to your jacket wherever you like. This way, you have a chic piece that can’t be bought in the store and is uniquely yours. You can iron on the lettering just as you would for a patch.

5. Leather and lace

Leather and lace: a classic duo. It makes the most sense to pair leather with lace since leather can be heavy and hot and lace is light and breezy. It’s no wonder the two have been paired for so long. However, you can bring originality to this combo by trying a lace bodysuit or lingerie piece (if you’re feeling frisky), and the end look is as fierce as can be, perfect for a night out with the girls or a on a date.

Name: Jacqueline, Allison, and Elaine Taylor
Job Title and Description: Founders of Le Prunier
College Name/Major: Jacqueline - UCLA/entered as a Biopsychology major. Allison - University of Southern California/Communications and Sociology. Elaine - University of San Francisco/Business Administration
Website: www.leprunier.com
Twitter Handle: @leprunierUSA
Instagram Handle: @leprunier

What does your current job entail? Is there such a thing as a typical day?

LP: No day is the same. Lately, it’s been a lot of travel for in-store customer education and training, sales and R/D for future products for Le Prunier.

What is the best part of your job?

LP: The freedom to create our own schedules, be our own boss, innovate, wake up with a purpose working toward something we’re passionate about and working with the people we love and trust the most.

What was your first entry-level job in your field and how did you get it?

LP: Growing up, our father farmed peaches, cherries and melons, so our first entry-level job as entrepreneurs was selling fruit at Davis, Chico, Sacramento and Yuba City farmer’s market throughout grammar and high school. At the time, we were too young to drive so we would have our friend's older sibling drive us to each farmer’s market, assist with setting up and selling product using the profits left over from the day's earnings. It taught us the value of a dollar, hard work, independence, and how to establish and negotiate pricing at a very early age.

What words of wisdom do you find most valuable?

LP: We’ve been fortunate to have had very successful and savvy business mentors along the way which we’ve found is crucial to have. Some advice that always rings true: Never be afraid to take risks, learn to be patient and just because someone older or superior challenges you or tells you no, doesn’t mean they're accurate. Also, always make sure to surround yourself with others who push you to be your best self and believe in you.

What is one mistake you made along the way and what did you learn from it?

LP: Not listening to our intuition. Often times, we always have the answers within ourselves. There is a silver lining to each mistake we make because we grow from it.

What has been the most surreal moment of your career thus far?

LP: During Christmas at our first onboarding event with Neiman Marcus, having Le Prunier housed among brands we grew up admiring and always thought were larger than life seemed surreal. However, we know we’re a young brand and there's a long road ahead with a lot of hard work for it to be a continued success.

What do you look for when considering hiring someone?

LP: Grit, passion, hunger, a positive attitude, the ability to set your ego aside for team success and being kind to others is important.

What advice would you give to a 20-something with similar aspirations?

LP: Don’t be afraid to think differently and deviate from the norm. Your uniqueness will set you apart. We’ve always taken the road less traveled and that’s made all of the difference.

What's the one thing that's stood out to you the most in a resume?

LP: Education and a strong network are important to get your foot in the door of a great job. However, the ability to think outside of the box, adapt and thrive in spite of setbacks and change is more telling of success than having multiple degrees. To date, most of our biggest life lessons have been outside of school and through real-world experiences.

HC Wake-Up Call: Trump's Twitter Rant Against Comey, New Russia Sanctions & Barbara Bush's Deteriorating Health

Good morning Her Campus! With a break-neck news cycle, there is no possible way for you to stay on top of every story that comes across your feeds—we’re all only human, after all.

But, life comes at you fast. So grab a cup of coffee and settle in for this quick and dirty guide to stories you might’ve been sleeping on (like, literally. It’s early.)

President Trump Attacks Former FBI Director James Comey On Twitter

Comey is set to release what the Washington Post called a "damaging tell-all book,"A Higher Loyalty, on Tuesday — and President Trump made it clear in a series of tweets that he's still not a fan of the former FBI director, even going as far as suggesting Comey should be imprisoned.

The tweets (see below) consist of a myriad of unproven statements, and Trump covers subjects ranging from Hillary Clinton's poll numbers to Comey supposedly throwing Attorney General Loretta Lynch "under the bus."

Comey, however, is kicking off a national tour for his book. ABC News aired his first interview since Trump fired him.

Former First Lady Barbara Bush Is In "Failing Health"& Won't Seek Further Treatment

A Bush family spokesman told the Associated Press on Sunday that despite being in "failing health," former first lady Barbara Bush will not seek additional treatment.

"Following a recent series of hospitalizations, and after consulting her family and doctors, Mrs. Bush, now age 92, has decided not to seek additional medical treatment and will instead focus on comfort care," spokesman Jim McGrath said in a release. He did not provide any details of Bush's health problems, though according to the Chicago Tribune, she's been treated for a thyroid condition for decades. Bush also had heart surgery in 2009 following a year-long hospitalization for a different surgery.

"It will not surprise those who know her that Barbara Bush has been a rock in the face of her failing health, worrying not for herself — thanks to her abiding faith — but for others," McGrath said. "She is surrounded by a family she adores, and appreciates the many kind messages and especially the prayers she is receiving."

The White House Is Imposing New Sanctions Against Russia Over Support For Syria

The Trump administration is taking further action following a recent suspected chemical attack that killed dozens in the Syrian town of Douma. After launching more than 100 missiles against facilitates believed to be linked to Syria's chemical weapons on Friday night, UN Ambassador Nikki Haley announced on Sunday that the administration will impose new sanctions against Russia "to punish it for enabling the Syrian government's use of chemical weapons" on Monday.

According to The New York Times, the sanctions "are meant to signal that the United States holds responsible not just the Damascus government of President Bashar al-Assad but also his patrons in Russia and Iran."

"[The sanctions] will go directly to any sort of companies that were dealing with equipment related to Assad and chemical weapons use," Haley said on CBS' Face the Nation. "And so I think everyone is going to feel it at this point. I think everyone knows that we sent a strong message and our hope is that they listen to it."

What to look out for...

Former Disney Star Sophie Reynolds Talks Friendship With Cameron Boyce & Her Role In YouTube Red's 'Youth & Consequences' (Exclusive Q&A)

You can't deny that actress Sophie Reynolds is going places. At only 18 years old, she has already made a name for herself in Hollywood with her recognizable roles in Disney XD's Gamers Guide to Pretty Much Everything opposite Cameron Boyce and now YouTube Red's latest series,Youth & Consequences. Having grown up an accomplished dancer, she's no stranger to the spotlight and knows how to hold an audience captive. We're so excited to see where she goes next.

Reynolds took some time out of her busy schedule to chat with Her Campus about her role in Youth & Consequences, her admiration for best friend Cameron Boyce and her inspirations in the entertainment industry.

Her Campus: You made your television debut on Disney XD’s Gamer’s Guide to Pretty Much Everything, but now currently star in the YouTube Red original series, Youth & Consequences. How do the two experiences compare? Do you feel like you’ve grown out of the so-called “Disney phase”?

Sophie Reynolds: I have absolutely loved working on both shows. Some of my favorite memories were made on both sets and I’ve been lucky to work with some incredible people on both shows. When I was on Gamer’s Guide I was still in high school, so our work hours were shorter by law and we had to do school on set. Juggling school and work was difficult but it was also a good reminder that even though I was surrounded by adults in this professional environment, I was still young and I should enjoy that. Honestly, the biggest similarity between the two projects was how much I loved both casts. We filmed Youth & Consequences in Utah and I learned nothing brings you closer than being in a small town far from home with a bunch of people who only have each other. We would get together for weekly game nights and frequently went adventuring around Utah together during our free time. The content of the show was definitely more mature and serious than Gamer’s Guide, but we had just as much fun making it.

I suppose you could say I’ve grown out of the “Disney phase,” but I’ve never really looked at it that way. I finished working on Gamer’s Guide at 17 and started Youth & Consequences at 18, so it really felt like a natural transition and I was just growing into more mature content.

HC: You worked extensively with Cameron Boyce in Gamer’s Guide to Pretty Much Everything and seem to have gotten extremely close. What do you admire about him as not only an actor but as a person?

SR: Well, Cameron is one of my best friends, so the list of things I admire about him is long! As an actor, he’s really dynamic. Watching him act and acting with him always feels exciting, even if we’ve done the scene ten times already. He’s also incredibly considerate of the crew and always very well-prepared.  As a person, he’s one of the most genuine people I’ve ever met. Cameron is always one hundred percent himself and never let’s anything change him. He’s just happy being him and I think that’s such a beautiful quality. His energy makes everyone around him happier and he’s great friend. Like I said, I could go on and on forever!

HC: What was your favorite part about filming Youth & Consequences? Is there anything you didn’t like?

SR: I think one of my favorite parts of filming Youth & Consequences was being on a set surrounded by so many strong women. Anna Akana was not only the star of our female-centric cast, but also served as an executive producer. Every episode of our show was also directed by a woman. Being able to work on a set where women have the strongest voice wasn’t something I’d experienced before, so that was very inspiring for me and was also a great opportunity for me to learn from some amazing women in this industry. I’m very proud to be a part of something that had such strong female representation both in front of and behind the camera. My one complaint is that we only got to do eight episodes for this season and I would have loved to shoot more!

HC: Tell us about your character in Youth & Consequences. Her clique seems to be a bit mean girl-ish.

SR: I play Plain Jane, one of the girls in Farrah’s crew. Jane has a huge heart, which is one of the things I love most about her. Throughout the season, Jane is going through this struggle to find herself and her voice. She loves her friends, but I think she hasn’t always felt like she totally belongs with them. Jane is just trying to figure out who she is and get past her own insecurities, and I think that’s something most people have gone through at some point in their lives and so they can relate to that.

I think one of my favorite things about our show is how Plain Jane and the other “popular” girls at school are really strong, but they aren't actually mean. You don’t have to be a bully to be admired. I think a lot of teen shows have that stereotypical mean girl queen bee of the school, and it’s been really exciting to be on a show that isn’t feeding into that stereotype. Farrah, the leader of the group, actually fights against social injustice throughout the show. Plain Jane might be popular, but she’s also a good person, and I hope that she can be an example to young people.

HC: How has your extensive experience with dance helped you as an actress and vice versa? Do you prefer one performance art over the other?

SR: Dance is the reason I’m acting now. I don’t think I would have found acting if it wasn’t for dance because that’s what taught me how much I love self-expression through art and it’s also what gave me such a strong work ethic. I definitely prefer acting now, but it all started with my love of dance and my true love of performing from a very young age.

HC: Who in the entertainment industry do you admire? Is there anyone you’d love to shadow for a day?

SR: There are so many people in this industry that I admire. To name a few I’d say Emma Stone, Meryl Streep, Greta Gerwig, Reese Witherspoon, and the list goes on. I think if there was someone I’d love to shadow right now it’d probably be Reese Witherspoon. The work she does not only as an actress, but as a producer is inspiring. Her production company has given female-centric stories a chance to be heard, and as a young woman in this industry I am thankful for that.

HC: You’re at an age when many young women are finishing up their first year of college. Did you ever think about attending college? If so, where and what would you want to study?

SR: I have definitely thought about attending college many times and if I weren’t an actress, I would be in school now. If I ever do attend college, I want to be able to give it all my focus, which would require a long break from working as an actor and I’m not quite ready for that. I think I would study film if I did go. I think education is valuable and I know that college is always an option I can choose. I don’t have any current plans to attend, but who knows what the future holds!

What to Do If You Have Body Dysmorphic Disorder

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a serious psychological condition that is related to obsessive-compulsive disorders. This of course doesn’t mean that living a wonderful, healthy life while having BDD is impossible. There are actionable steps that you can take and a variety of treatments that you can try!

There are also other people who have gone through or are going through the same thing—you’re not alone! We gathered the personal experiences of some collegiettes and reached out to a few experts for their professional takes on dealing with BDD, in the hopes of providing those dealing with the same thing with some resources and a source of comfort. Read on for a series of solutions if you think you have body dysmorphic disorder.

1. Identify the symptoms

BDD differs from eating disorders in that individuals with BDD experience persistent, intrusive and distressing thoughts about their physical appearance to the point of being convinced that their appearance looks differently than it actually does. “Many people are unhappy with an aspect of their appearance or the way they look,” says Dr. Talia Wiesel, PhD, assistant professor of psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital’s Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders Program. BDD goes beyond more commonplace insecurities and can pertain to very particular physical attributes including one’s forehead, chin and hair, to name a few.

BDD has a significant, constant impact on the way individuals go about their day-to-day lives. “If the degree of time and energy thinking about the body part(s) and engaging in ritualistic behavior (seeking reassurance about appearance-related concerns, mirror checking, etc.) interferes with a person’s daily functioning and causes significant emotional distress, this could indicate someone is suffering with BDD,” Dr. Wiesel says.

“Two experiences stand out to me as being hard to deal with: getting dressed in the morning and going shopping,” says Ayla, a junior at the University of Notre Dame.* “When I looked in the mirror I would always pull at my thighs and look at my stomach at all angles.”

For Ayla, the defining factor of her BDD was that she had contradicting feelings about her appearance. “I knew how much I weighed, because I was obsessed with the scale, and logically knew I was super underweight, but I never thought I looked skinny, even when I manipulated my body,” Ayla says.

These phenomena are common for individuals with BDD. “Frequent behaviors relating to this can include skin picking, mirror checking and camouflaging, such as with makeup or a hat,” says Dr. Roy M. Stefanik, D.O., a psychiatrist at Fairfax Mental Health. “In other cases they turn up at a plastic surgeon’s office with the hope that somehow having cosmetic surgery will fix the problem, while in fact for people who have BDD, surgery tends to make the problem worse.”

2. Get a diagnosis

Especially given the fact that BDD can be hard to distinguish from an eating disorder, it’s important that you get a professional opinion. There are doctors who specialize in this disorder, and they want to help you identify BDD and come up with a personalized plan to treat it!

“I've been in and out of therapy for years [but] I wasn't diagnosed with body dysmorphic disorder until I was just at a normal doctor's office,” Ayla says. “I was pretty anorexic at the time and the number on the scale was really low, but she said the way I was talking about my body just did not add up.”

You should speak to a psychiatrist, psychologist or other expert in obsessive-compulsive disorders if you think you may have BDD. “BDD is often unrecognized and undiagnosed in the general population; studies have shown a rate of 4-5% in college students,” Dr. Wiesel says. There’s nothing wrong with letting a professional know that you are concerned you have BDD; they might not otherwise be on the lookout for symptoms that confirm your suspicions.

3. Consider your treatment options

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) will likely be the means of treatment recommended by your doctor. “[CBT] focuses on helping you learn how negative thoughts, emotional reactions and behaviors contributes to problems over time, and how to challenge automatic negative thoughts about your body image, as well as learning more flexible and realistic ways of thinking,” Dr. Stefanik says.

You and your therapist can work together to determine your most effective treatment using CBT. “The therapist and individual work together to recognize and challenge thoughts and behavior patterns linked to his/her BDD symptoms,” Dr. Wiesel says. “Individuals learn strategies to help decrease avoidance (e.g. avoiding social events) and compulsive behaviors (e.g. repeatedly asking a family member for reassurance about appearance).”

This, however, shouldn’t be your ending point. “Avoidance and compulsive behaviors help decrease anxiety in the short term, but reinforce BDD symptoms in the long term,” Dr. Wiesel adds. “Developing alternate coping skills and flexible thinking strategies (without relying on avoidance or compulsions) is the key to mastering BDD.” There will always be work to do, but it’s all part of maintaining the best possible mental health!

4. Think about solutions other than therapy, too

If you’re not ready or able to go to therapy yet, or if you want to add other remedies to your treatment of BDD, non-therapeutic methods are also an option! “Mindfulness practices, such as deep breathing and meditation can be helpful practices in addition to therapy,” Dr. Wiesel says.

There are lots of small-scale self-corrective maneuvers you can practice to address BDD. “It’s helpful to learn alternate ways to handle urges or rituals to help reduce mirror checking or reassurance seeking from others,” Dr. Stefanik says. “Learning behavioral techniques such as progressive muscle relaxation or visual imagery can help reduce the intensity of the feelings.” The Mayo Clinic lists several types of relaxation techniques that you can try.

As for medication, there are pharmaceutical products that address BDD as well. “Although no medications have been specifically approved for BDD, the SSRI’s (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) are frequently used, such as Prozac,” Dr. Stefanik says. “In addition, other antianxiety or antidepressant meds may be prescribed.”

Dr. Wiesel also recommends the Body Dysmorphic Disorder Foundation as a useful resource. In addition to providing an online community for affected individuals, the Body Dysmorphic Disorder Foundation’s website offers information on support groups, medication, videos, books by individuals with BDD and more.

5. Make a plan

Whether you intend to go the traditional therapy route or try another alternative you’re more comfortable with, you should establish a plan for yourself (in consultation with your doctor as well) to ensure that you’ll stay committed to getting better and addressing the disorder.

Having actionable steps you can take in your coping with and, hopefully, eventual recovery from BDD will make living with the disorder that much easier. “Once it was diagnosed they were able to help me work on behavioral therapy and I became more conscious of the disordered thoughts and behavior and was able to work catch myself when I was doing it,” Ayla says. “Then I could start working on the mental exercises my therapist recommended to help.” It’s all one step at a time.

6. Remember health is about all of you

The best way to address BDD is to do so while keeping rest of your health in mind, too. When you’re taking care of one part of yourself, you’re taking care of all the parts! “Healthy daily habits and routines are necessary to take good care of yourself, whether it’s limiting recreational alcohol or drug use, getting at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise three times a week [or] learning to eat healthy, but not in a way that’s self-harming,” Dr. Stefanik says.

For Ayla, healing from BDD was necessarily a part of other factors of her health. “I think the diagnosis pretty much just felt like another thing to add to the list of problems and nothing really resolved itself until I saw progress with other disordered eating, depression, etc. that I began to see things getting better with BDD,” Ayla says.

Given that BDD can be difficult to differentiate from an eating disorder due to overlapping symptoms, it’s likely that you’ll want to take steps in addressing disordered eating as well. “It is possible for a person to meet criteria for both BDD and an eating disorder, in which case he/she would endorse disordered eating and possibly use of laxatives, diuretics, excessive exercise, and/or purging in addition to the BDD compulsions,” Dr. Wiesel says. BDD and disordered eating may share symptoms, but they are different conditions and should be addressed with consciously different remedies.

Life with a mental illness of any sort isn’t easy, and it is worsened by the innumerable social and other pressures put on people to look and feel good all the time. Remember that your journey towards complete mental healthiness won’t look like anyone else’s, and that’s the way it’s meant to be!

Hopefully after reading this article, you’ll feel a little more equipped to begin your process towards a healthier personal wellbeing. If it’s a helpful starting place, remember that there are people around you who love you just the way you are, and wouldn’t change you for the world.

What To Do If You’re Hungry No Matter How Much You Eat

Have you ever had one of those days where no matter how much you eat, you sit down afterwards only to hear your stomach growling with hunger all over again? Marisa, a sophomore at Arizona State, says that when she’s PMSing or on her period, “It's like [she’s] a bottomless pit and literally nothing will fill [her] up.” Who can relate?

One of the best pieces of dietary advice is, “Eat when you’re hungry, stop when you’re full.” But when you feel like you’re always hungry, it’s not that easy. What do you do when you feel like you’re constantly hungry? Here are four things to know.

1. Listen to your hunger

Hunger cues are one of the best survival mechanisms that human beings have, because they’re literally our bodies telling us, “Hey, I need more calories to fuel this work that I’m doing!” It’s not necessarily a problem if some days you crave a lot more food than you do on others. You never know what your body is up to!

In fact, even if you were sound asleep for 24 hours straight and got absolutely no exercise, your body would still need food to fuel all of your internal activities like regulating your body temperature and pumping blood. Right before your period and during your period, your body is doing a ton of extra work that you might not even be aware of, and it needs extra calories to fuel that extra work (which is why you might get hungry on your period).

The best way to gain and maintain a healthy weight is to listen to your body, which often means eating a little more on days when your body wants you to. If you ignore your hunger cues and refuse to do what your body wants you to do, you can hurt your metabolism and develop an unhealthy relationship with food.

Katherine W. Bauer, Ph.D., works in the nutritional sciences department at the University of Michigan School of Public Health, and she researches the social and behavioral determinants of obesity and obesogenic behavior among children and adolescents. She says, “Being hungry and depriving yourself for the goal of controlling your weight most often backfires and leads to over-eating and potentially binge eating.”

What should you do instead? Dr. Bauer says, “Individuals who are flexible in how they approach eating - they listen to their bodies, eat more or less as their body tells them to, and don't try to implement rigid rules about eating - are generally much more successful long term in maintaining a healthy weight and consuming a high-quality and enjoyable diet.”

2. Examine what you’re eating

Calories are a pretty flawed way to determine how much you should be eating. (A couple Oreos have the same number of calories as a giant bowl of pasta, but obviously the pasta is going to fill you up way more.) So when you choose your meals, make sure you’re eating foods that are going to stick with you and provide you with constant energy throughout the day.

“Adding protein and fiber to meals can increase feelings of fullness,” Dr. Bauer says. “Meanwhile, foods high in refined grains that are low in fiber often leave people feeling hungry. Consider as you're picking your meals whether you could add some more lean protein or high fiber veggies to your meal.”

If you’re getting a lot of calories, but not a lot of micronutrients (such as vitamins and minerals), your body will continue to send you cravings for those micronutrients, even if your body is physically full. Certain foods, particularly meats, don’t have a lot (or any) vitamins, so your body might continue sending you cravings for a sweet treat after you’re full from eating them. Why is it sending you cravings for a sweet treat? Because fruit is chock-full of the vitamins your body needs, and fruit is the sweetest food you’ll find in nature!

3. Practice mindful eating

In college, we tend to always be on-the-go, grabbing a Clif bar as a snack while we walk to class or a bowl of pasta while we do our homework. Dr. Bauer says that this can confuse your body, leading you to continue to feel hungry even after you ate.

“Eating slowly and being able to focus on your feelings of hunger during meals are two ways to ensure that your body can realize you're full,” she says. “Try to avoid situations where you're distracted while eating.”

Meals are a great time to take a break from the busyness of college life and sit down and be thankful for what you have. Try to utilize this time to the best of your abilities as much as you can!

4. Don’t be fooled!

Have you ever been sitting in class, and someone mentions, let’s say, tacos? Then the rest of class, you couldn't stop thinking about how badly you wanted a taco, and as soon as class was over, you practically ran home to make yourself one?

According to Dr. Bauer, you’re not alone in this. ”Being around lots of tempting foods, or even food advertisements, can trick us into thinking that we're still hungry and need more to eat,” she says. “Think about whether there are ways to set up your living space so you're not ‘cued’ to eat even when you're not hungry. That may mean tricks like putting pizza leftovers in the freezer instead of having them front and center in the fridge or putting sweets up away in a cabinet, out of sight instead of having them out on the counter.”

Obviously, it’s not the end of the world if you occasionally eat food just because you saw a pic of it on Instagram and you started craving it, but you’re not doing your body any favors if you choose your entire diet based on whatever food you recently saw.

Listening to your hunger cues takes work and practice, but once you get the hang of it, your body will thank you!

How To Know If It's A Date If Neither Of You Have Defined It

$
0
0

Back in your parents’ dating prime, it all seemed simple. If they saw someone they were interested in, they would just ask them out on a date in-person. They would actually use the word “date,” not “hang out” or “chill.” There was no risk of going 115 weeks deep on Instagram and accidentally liking a photo or trying to determine if that girl in their profile picture is a sister or an ex.

Now, the dating water is murky. Relationships begin anywhere from dating apps to Instagram DMs and there’s something almost old-fashioned about hearing a couple who began dating by overtly asking someone out.

In the digital age, it’s easy to communicate with people, but it’s getting harder and harder to figure out what people are actually trying to say. All too often, you end up on group hangouts or one-on-one outings and you’re texting your BFF or roommate trying to decode what certain sentences or actions mean. Is it a date or not?

That’s why we called in reinforcements to get advice directly from a professional. Carole Lieberman  is an M.D., psychiatrist and author from Beverly Hills who is an expert on all things dating related. Together, we have the inside scoop to decoding your modern dating woes.

1. Signs a one-on-one hangout is a date, even if neither person has used that word to describe it

To know whether or not you’re going on a date with that someone you want to be a *special someone,* it’s important to think about how this hangout originated. If the person went out of their way to ask you to hang out alone, then there’s a good chance they are interested and it’s a date. But, if you usually hang out in a group and the other group members just ditched, the intention might not have been romantic in nature, but it certainly could get there!

Hanging out is also a great way for the other person to determine if they’re comfortable with you and want to take you on an official date, because it’s less awkward and nerve-wracking. People shy away from using the word date, especially if they’re already friends, because if it doesn’t go well, it’s hard to go back from dates to hang outs.

“You shouldn't assume that a one-on-one hangout is a date. It is often someone just testing you out to see if they then want to date you or if just hookup with you,” Dr. Lieberman says. “It’s different if a hangout comes naturally, such as, you both happen to run into each other studying in the library and they invite you to hang out for coffee afterwards. That’s okay, and may be construed as more likely to lead to a date later on.”

2. Decode their texting language and body language

Text language is also key when it comes to figuring out what your potential SO wants. You text differently if it’s your nana versus that cutie in your psychology class, so expect that your potential date does too! If they text anybody else in your friend group, ask your friends how they usually text. If it’s totally platonic, or a visible difference from how they text you, then they might be interested. Extra emojis or flirting that goes on between you two and nobody else is a good indicator of where their interests are. Even better, if they don’t solo text any of your other friends in the group chat, then it’s clear that there might be a special interest in you.

3. Protect your heart if you’re interested, but it's unclear how they feel

Even if all signs are pointing to the hangout being a date, it’s important to always keep in mind that you might be wrong or they’re not in the same spot as you yet. It’s also easier to calm down and be yourself if you aren’t constantly reminding yourself that it’s a date.

After the date/hangout, if they don’t call or text immediately, don’t fret. Even though it’s so easy to get in touch, people still have it in their heads that they can’t text for a few hours or days so as not to seem desperate. Or, draft the text yourself and get the conversation going again. If you say, “I had so much fun on our date,” then you’re putting it all out there, but by saying, “I had fun, we should do this again,” it’s a good way to stay a little guarded if you’re still unsure if it was a date, but it also shows them that you had a good time and would be interested in trying it again.

4. Take Note of Body Language

People always talk about how important body language is in showing that you’re interested. Some of us avoid eye contact like the plague, but it allows you to really connect with someone and show that your attention is on them. When you’re looking into someone’s eyes, you can show them that you’re really focusing on what they’re saying, and you can also tell if they’re as engaged in the conversation as you are. If they avoid your gaze and subsequently blush, then that’s a good sign that they’re interested and you make them nervous. If they’re somewhat tense, then that also shows some nerves, but if they’re sitting with their arms crossed, yawn, or are constantly looking around to see what else is going on, then they might not be interested. If you’ve hung out in group settings before, also note if they are acting any differently than they do in the group. This can also be a sign of nerves, or that they’re just uncomfortable.

Phone usage is a modern way to tell if the other person is interested in you. If they are only looking at their phone during awkward gaps in the conversation, then it’s probably a defense mechanism. If they’re picking up their phone when you’re in the middle of a story or when you’re telling them something about who you are, then they are not giving you the undivided attention that you deserve.

“Body language must be read in context. The same body posture can mean two different things. For example, if someone has relaxed body posture with good eye contact, they may be interested in you. But, they may also be comfortable because they are putting you in the friend zone. Similarly, if someone seems uptight, with arms crossed, they are warding you off. But this may be because they’re so hot for you and feel so inadequate, that you scare them.” Dr. Lieberman says.

Bonus: A little help from our friends

Abby Piper is a senior at the University of Notre Dame. For her, knowing the person is paying is a hint that they’re on a date.

“I went to dinner with someone after a high school event we were both at once. Keep in mind, that we went to Bread Co. (Panera). Not fancy--not even a sit down. But then he paid for my meal and I was like ‘shit.’ I tried to pay for it myself, but he insisted. Later that week someone told me they heard that I went on a date with so-and-so and I was like, ‘Great so he did think it was a date.’ There's a chance a good guy friend or nice person might pay for you, but I think that if the guy does pay, it might be a sign that you're on a date.”

Situations like Abby's are awkward-you don't want to make the other person feel weird by insisting on paying for your own food, but you also don't want them to misinterpret what you thought was a hangout as a date. Paying is a subtle clue-in that you are on a date, since it's in every Rom-Com and TV show that we watched when we were younger--paying used to equate to a date. But, splitting the check has become more common and modern because of ~equality~, so if the other person doesn't pay for you, it doesn't mean that you're necessarily just on a hangout.

So the next time you’re unsure of what your one-on-one hangout is, or how you can turn it into something more, just remember that you have the control (and the tools!) to figure it out.

'Grey's Anatomy': ICE Came After One Of The Interns & It Might Not Be Who You'd Think

Grey’s Anatomy never fails to keep up with its own theme of being a little too real, joining in the ranks of shows shedding light on the current climate for DACA recipients with this week's “Beautiful Dreamer." It's far from the first time the show spoke up about undocumented immigrants—many moons ago, in a very early episode, where Izzy risked her job to treat an undocumented immigrant from China, who refused to come inside because of her status. This week, ICE Agent Martin Fields arrived to the nurses’ station where Meredith and Bailey were speaking to each other, letting them know he was there to see one of their surgical interns. In the last two weeks of previews and as the show cut to intro, the camera zoomed in on the group of interns as they headed down the stairs for rounds. The shot immediately draws your eyes to Quadri, in part because of the camera's focus and in part because her bright red hijab is a deep contrast to the color of their scrubs and the walls behind them, before panning across the rest of the group. I think the setup for this shot—the camera angles and the coloring—were designed to mislead us into assuming the most stereotypical choice today.

We didn't have to wait as long as we usually might to find out if we were right about something. After the quick cutaway of the intro, Bailey and Meredith were already meeting with Sam Bello in an unoccupied OR. This should have been the obvious choice, as it was announced earlier this year that the actress landed the lead of an upcoming CW reboot. Dr. Bello is a Dreamer, but her work permit and documentation were all up to date. “The only way I could get deported is if I break the law, but I don’t. I don’t speed, I don’t do drugs, I don’t do anything wrong," she promised them.

The attendings were relieved, but Bello began to panic. She'd had a friend fin high school that had been an intern at a law firm, and ICE dropped in on her at work one day saying they just wanted to talk. Two days later, she was dropped in Mexico City with a bag of clothes and a check from her family that she had no way of cashing. She'd come to the USA when she was two and didn’t speak any Spanish, and after working herself up telling the story, Bello didn't know how to calm down and think.

Bello would most likely lose her medical accreditation if she ended up back in El Salvador. Her mother had taken her and her sister to Florida when she was just one years old, after seeing her father get shot on their front porch during the war. She worked two jobs, 20 hours a day, to keep them all safe, and Bello refused to go back. While Meredith called DaLuca in for some brainstorming, Bailey set to work on distracting Agent Fields, making up an imaginary surgery of unknown length to derail him. Unfortunately, he was insistent on waiting and refused to reveal the reason that he was there for Dr. Bello.

Meanwhile, green card marriages, faked deaths and secret hideouts were all proposed solutions to keep Bello in the United States—but marriage doesn't grant Dreamers legal status. She had graduated college Magna Cum Laude, was valedictorian in high school and captain of the dance squad (and thus not the fake your own death kind of person), and Owen called Amelia's suggestions for calling in Megan or an old army buddy's favor grasping at straws.

As they continued to search for alternative options, Bailey noticed that Fields' jugular vein was distended, which, in addition to the antacids he'd popped and the fact that he'd been at rest for a while, indicated a serious heart condition. He thought this was just part of her distraction technique, as did Maggie when she was called in to consult, but Dr. Bailey more than likely saved Agent Fields’ life. Before he left, he admitted to Bailey that they were after her for running a red light. They had her on camera, after an incredibly long day and with someone riding her ass, pumping the gas to make it through the yellow. Meredith was astounded, as was I: “I run a red light once a month! They can deport her for that?” Because honestly, same.

DaLuca finally suggested they run to Canada, but Meredith knew that that wasn’t the way to go this time. “They’re treating you like someone who snuck into this country in the trunk of a car. Don’t become what they’re trying to make you. If you run, you’re a criminal. If you’re a criminal, you can never practice medicine again. Do not give them that.” Finally, Bello was prepared to just go along with ICE. Her mother was working on finding a lawyer and she was wondering if she was even allowed to take a bag with her when Meredith presented her with a ticket to Zurich and copies of an application and essay, which she said were submitted last year and written by Dr. Bello.

She would voluntarily leave the country to continue her studies, working with Dr. Yang in Cristina’s cardio-thoracic unit, and I would pretend like I wasn't emotional for the next 15 minutes. They always take care of their own, you guys, and they always make a statement while doing so.

Herbivores Will Finally Have Another Option At Shake Shack With Their New 'Veggie Shack' Burger

Rejoice, non-meateaters. Shake Shack is adding another veggie burger to its menu.

The Veggie Shack is the ever-popular burger joint's newest addition to the menu. The burger (which joins the only other veggie burger on the menu — the "Shroom burger"), consists of a vegan, bean-based patty that also features brown rice and beets, topped with provolone cheese, pickles, onions, lettuce, vegan mayo and nestled in between a potato bun.

The burger will be available for purchase starting on Thursday, April 19, if you live in the New York City area. It will be offered at Shake Shacks everywhere on April 24 too.

The new veggie burger comes after Shake Shack received some backlash over its limited options for vegetarians/vegans. The "Shroom burger" was deep-fried and contained mushrooms, which some consumers reportedly felt wasn't giving them an option to be healthier, as Forbes noted.

Now, can we have some fries with that?

Fox News' Sean Hannity Was Named As Trump Lawyer Michael Cohen's Third Client

In a New York court room on Monday it was revealed during a hearing that conservative political commentator and talk show host, Sean Hannity, was President Donald Trump's attorney Michael Cohen's third client, after a judge ordered Cohen to name his clients

Many of Cohen's legal documents were seized by the FBI on April 9, which the president himself referred to as "a witch hunt" during a meeting with reporters right after the raid. It was reported that Cohen might have had papers or information in his hotel room that proved that Trump paid hush money to adult film star, Stormy Daniels, who he allegedly had an affair with according to The New YorkerThe article also claimed that some of Trump's other personal information was seized during the raid, as well. A warrant for the raid was obtained from a judge beforehand.

Sean Hannity, an outspoken Trump supporter, is now coming under fire for being a client of Cohen's because there is question as to whether or not that crosses a line for a news program host, according to The New York Times. His Fox News show, Hannity, is one of the network's most popular.

Cohen revealed during the hearing that he was working for 10 clients as of 2017. He provided seven of them, he claimed in a legal filing, with business consulting. President Trump, Elliott Briody (a Conservative philanthropist) and a then-unnamed third person were the other clients. Briody resigned from his position as a chairman to the Republican Party after it was revealed that Cohen helped him pay $1.6 million to a former mistress who had gotten pregnant with Briody's child during the affair, according to The New York Times.

He was then court-ordered by Judge Kimba M. Wood on Monday to reveal the identity of the third person, who was Sean Hannity. Prior to revealing the name, as reported by The New York Times, Cohen's legal team argued with the judge to keep the identity of the third person secret, so as not to shame him.

Hannity had denied working with Cohen, and maintains that he never paid him for his work and therefore didn't count as an actual client of his.

On his website, Hannity released a full statement on the issue:

"Michael Cohen has never represented me in any matter. I never retained him, received an invoice, or paid legal fees. I have occasionally had brief discussions with him about legal questions about which I wanted his input and perspective," he said. "I assumed those conversations were confidential, but to be absolutely clear they never involved any matter between me and a third-party. In response to some wild speculation, let me make clear that I did not ask Michael Cohen to bring this proceeding on my behalf, I have no personal interest in this proceeding, and, in fact, asked that my de minimis discussions with Michael Cohen, which dealt almost exclusively about real estate, not be made a part of this proceeding."

Fox News has not yet commented on Cohen's reveal or if it will affect the future of Hannity's show — however, a number of contributors to the network have started to speak out about the situation and what Fox News anchor Shepard Smith called the "elephant in the room."

Someone Stole 400 Copies Of A Student Newspaper After They Wrote About Their College President's Resignation Over Sexual Assault Allegations

In a world of fake news and media censorship, journalists have an incredibly important responsibility of allowing people to have access to the truth. That is exactly what journalists for The Communicator, Spokane Falls Community College’s student newspaper, intended to do when they published a cover story about Darren Pitcher, who had resigned as SFCC’s president amid allegations of sexual assault and harassment.

Of course, some people don’t want to hear the truth— and apparently might even go to ridiculous lengths to prevent others from reading it.

Magdalena Clough, the Communicator’s editor in chief, told The Spokesman-Review that she placed 200 copies in the racks in the administration building, as usual, but by the time she checked back at the end of the day Monday, every copy was gone. She then said she refilled the racks with another 200 copies, which, again, were gone within 24 hours.

“We have no idea who is stealing these,” Clough told The Spokesman-Review. “I know there’s been a lot of controversy on campus about this.”

This prompted Jason Nix, The Communicator’s faculty advisor, to send out a campus-wide email: “As the faculty adviser, I will be working with campus security, attorneys from the Student Press Law Center and local law enforcement to discover who is responsible and ensure that they are punished for this infringement of students’ First Amendment rights. Censoring of student media through theft and vandalism on this campus is unethical, illegal and will not be tolerated under any circumstances.”

Nix told The Spokesman-Review that other colleagues said that the photo of Pitcher on the front page of the paper may have been a problem for the individuals accusing the former interim president of harassment, however the story reportedly didn't have an details about those allegations.

“I find it hard to believe that this was a totally random act that just happened to hit that one building,” Nix said “My concern is that there’s someone on this campus – be it a student or a teacher or an administrator – who thinks it’s OK to go out there and try to silence student journalism. This is not just unethical. This is against the law. This is students’ First Amendment rights."

It's True: Khloe Kardashian Reveals Her Baby Girl's Name & Kris Jenner Shares The Meaning Behind It

We finally have a name!

Khloe Kardashian announced via Instagram on Monday that she and daddy, Tristan Thompson, are completely overwhelmed with love, thanks to their baby girl True Thompson.

While that might not sit well with some people who frequently criticize the family for their eclectic name choices (see: Chicago, Stormi, Reign), the meaning behind the name is actually really sweet.

Matriarch Kris Jenner explained that the name True has actually been in the family for quite some time. "FUN FACT… my Grandfather’s name on my Dad’s side was True Otis Houghton….my real Dad’s name was Robert True Houghton…so i am so excited Khloe named her daughter True!!!" Jenner shared.

How sweet is that? As is evident on any episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians or literally any of her social media, Khloe is majorly family oriented and it's less shocking of a name now that we've been given a little bit of family history behind it.

We're so happy to hear that mommy and baby are doing well! Welcome to the world, True Thompson!

What do you think of the name? Let us know on Twitter!

6 Texts Guys Send When They’re Interested

$

0

When you first meet a potential partner, texting back and forth is one way to find out if you’re a good fit. Of course you’ll also want to hang out in person, but the way a guy texts can say a lot about his intentions. Is he flirtatious? Does he make jokes? Knowing the difference between friendly conversation and playful banter can sometimes be tricky. Luckily, we talked to college guys and girls to get the scoop on what it all means. Here are six kinds of texts guys send when they’re interested in you.

1. He asks you questions

If a guy is interested in getting to know you better, he’ll want to engage you in conversation—even if it’s just over text. Mitchell, a recent Emerson College graduate, says that he’ll talk to a girl about her interests and what she does for fun. “I’ll ask random questions that get the conversation rolling,” he says. “I just try to get to know the person as I’m talking to them.” While he may not be thinking about dating you yet, if he asks you genuine questions over text, he’s definitely trying to get closer to you. The same goes for his responses.

“The fact that he actually cares enough to write meaningful responses back to you means a lot,” says Shereen Jeyakumar, a sophomore at Florida Atlantic University. “Maybe you tell him about a book you read, and he messages back about how interesting it sounds or recommends books back to you. The effort he puts into responding is quite telling, even though at first glance it might seem platonic. He definitely knows you're someone worth pursuing and since that's based on your intelligence and your interesting conversation, he's most likely a keeper!” We agree with this 100 percent.

2. He brings up something you like

If he’s always mentioning things that you like, he probably sees you as more than just a friend. Maybe he wants to watch your favorite TV show with you, or he suggests you two go on a hike together because that’s more your thing. Tyler, a senior at Emerson College, says that when he is interested in someone he’ll try to talk more about them than anything else. “I try to find out what kind of music, movies and TV you like," he says. "Get you talking about what you’re passionate about.” If a guy wants to talk about you more than him, that’s definitely a good sign.

“Other guys I text send one word answers or they wouldn't type out the whole word but [this specific] guy was interested in what I had to say, he asked me questions and it was really nice to see him interested in me and actually listening,” says Irina Alejandro, a junior at the University of Houston. “A particular text he sent was, ‘Oh sweet! What's one of your favorite novels?’ It doesn't sound like a lot but I'm a big reader and it meant a lot.” Even a seemingly small question like that shows that he’s listening!

3. He remembers an important event

Another telling sign that he’s interested is that he pays attention to what you say and remembers things you tell him. If he brings up an important event that you mentioned earlier, he may be trying to connect. Maybe he’ll ask you how a job interview went, or tell you to wish your best friend a happy birthday from him.

“One text I got from a guy that let me know he was interested was when he texted me after I flew home for Thanksgiving and asked how my flight was,” says Haley Miller, a sophomore at Miami University. “It showed that he cared that I landed safely and that he wanted to talk even though we weren’t at school together.” If a guy goes above and beyond over text, he’ll probably do the same in a relationship.

4. He tries to impress you

When a guy likes a girl, he’s going to want to impress her. Texts that allow him to show off a little could mean he wants to get your attention. Maybe he mentions that he’s been stepping it up at the gym, or that he just got his work published online. Whatever it is he’s bragging about, he’s probably doing it for you.

“One text I remember distinctly that made me realize that my current boyfriend was interested was a text that would really ‘wow’ a potential partner,” says Katia Davis, a junior at the University of Kentucky. “Before we met up he told me that he could take me to the top of the second tallest building in our city. I knew he was interested in something between us because he could potentially get in trouble for taking random people into his workplace. I don't think someone would go to such lengths to impress someone for nothing!” We’re in agreement here. If he takes a risk for you, he clearly thinks you’re worth the possibility of getting in trouble!

5. He’s sweet

When he shows that he cares about you and your well-being, that’s a sure sign that he’s into you. “I’ll wish good morning, and ask how the day is going,” says Tyler. “Basically I try to be a good friend.” What starts off as being a good friend, however, can definitely turn into something more!

“Guys may even text you about something they saw on your social media, because a simple like wasn't enough,” says Courtney Martere, a senior at Marist College. “Of course the genuine ‘How's your day going?’, ‘How'd that test go?’ or ‘How was your night?’ questions are a sure sign a guy is into you. No man is going to wonder about your day-to-day life unless he's feeling it, and maybe wants to be a part of it.” If you reciprocate these sweet texts, he’ll be sure to notice.

6. He’s straightforward

Finally, if a guy is into you, he’ll say it! He might not blatantly write, “I like you” via iMessage. Over text, though, he might show it through emojis, fast replies or flirty messages. “I find that guys will be super quick to respond when they are interested,” says Ella Purtill, a third year at Western University. Of course, that’s not the only way to tell he wants to be more than friends.

“If he ends up being bae and we're a lot more comfortable, I'll get: ‘Come spend the night,’ ‘I wanna see you/I miss you,’ ‘You're in the wrong bed,’” says Ashley Drayton, a recent graduate of Georgia State University. Like we said, sometimes guys actually do say what they mean.

Whether it’s a new texting buddy or a guy you’ve been talking to for a while, it can be difficult to know if he thinks of you as more than a friend. These six signs are all good indicators that he’s interested. And if all else fails, you can always just ask!

Beyonce Announces Scholarship Program For HBCU Students & This Is Why She's Queen

Beyonce, patron saint of our generation, has taken her sainthood to new heights.

After absolutely destroying the Coachella stage over the weekend, and revamping the idea of what is expected of a festival performance, Beyonce has gone and proven her earth-bound goddess status yet again.

In the aforementioned performance, Beyonce opened up with a full scale marching band as an homage to the halftime performances from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). They wore costumes of collegiate wear, including Greek letters sparkling across their chests. It's clear that she values the tradition, but now it's also clear that she values the education of the students carrying on that tradition just as much.

Variety reports the "Formation" singer announced through her BeyGOOD foundation that she will be awarding four HBCU schools $100,000 in scholarships. The four schools being granted the newly established Homecoming Scholars Award Program for this fall's enrollment are Xavier, Wilberforce, Tuskegee and Bethune-Cookman. One winner from each of these will receive $25,000 for use during the 2018-2019 academic year.

All of these colleges are Historically Black Colleges and Universities—institutions that were created pre-Civil Rights Act of 1964 that allowed African-American students to attend college without the threat of anti-integrationists.

"The show, with its homage to excellence in education, was a celebration of the homecoming weekend experience, the highest display of college pride," a release from BeyGOOD noted. "The energy-filled production put the spotlight on art and culture, mixing the ancient and the modern, which resonated masterfully through the marching band, performance art, choir and dance. It was the impetus to mark her second scholarship program.”

This isn't the first time Beyonce has set up a scholarship program. Last year, the singer announced the Formation Scholars Awards Program on the one year anniversary of Lemonade's release. That scholarship was set up to encourage and inspire "young women who are bold, creative, conscious, confident and unafraid to think outside of the box."

Parents Of Sandy Hook Victims Are Suing This Conspiracy Theorist For Defamation

For years, Alex Jones, conspiracy theorist and founder of the website InfoWars, has long been claiming that the parents of the victims of the Sandy Hook shooting played a role in the massacre. Now, the parents of two of these children have filed defamation lawsuits against Jones and one of his contributors, as Gizmodo reports.

The Sandy Hook massacre remains one of the deadliest shootings in US history. According to CNN, on December 14th, 2012, “Twenty students, ages 6 and 7, and six adults were killed at the school.” The gunman also killed his mother prior to carrying out these attacks.

In one of InfoWars’ broadcasts, Jones described the parents of the Sandy Hook victims, stating, “So here are these holier than thou people, when we question CNN, who is supposedly at the site of Sandy Hook, and they got in one shot leaves blowing, and the flowers that are around it, and you see the leaves blowing, and they go [gestures]. They glitch. They’re recycling a green-screen behind them.”

The other lawsuit claims that Jones and Shroyer said that Heslin lied about holding his son’s body in his hands “with a bullet hole through his head.” Jones and Shroyer falsely claimed that the parents had not been allowed to see the bodies of their children.

Gizmodo obtained court documents that allege that “Jones repeatedly spread malicious claims that the parents were part of a conspiracy to fabricate the “narrative” around the shooting.” One of these lawsuits was filed by Veronique de la Rosa and Leonard Pozner, whose six-year-old son, Noah Pozner, was killed in the attack. Another lawsuit filed by Neil Heslin, whose six-year-old son Jessie Heslin was killed.

The plaintiffs attorney in this case is Mark Bankston of Farrar & Ball, who filed another lawsuit against InfoWars last month in a very similar case.

The plaintiffs are seeking at least $1,000,000 for “malicious harm to their emotional states and reputations.”

After six years, WWE favorites, Nikki Bella and John Cena, have decided to end their engagement. Fans following them since their relationship started back in 2012 are devastated to see them split up.

“While this decision was a difficult one, we continue to have a great deal of love and respect for one another," the couple said in a statement to E! News. "We ask that you respect our privacy during this time in our lives.”

On Monday, Cena also shared an emotional message with his fans on social media. "Hardship, loss, and humility are extremely difficult waters to navigate, but perseverance thru them builds a strength to withstand anything life throws your way," he tweeted.

We’ve been able to watch the couple's relationship unfold on Total Divas and Total Bellas. And who could forget Cena’s iconic proposal last April in the middle of the ring at WrestleMania 33?

Even though their split may be heartbreaking for longtime fans, thankfully we’ll be able to continue watching them on season three of Total Bellas premiering this May.

Here's hoping this isn’t a definite end for Cena and Bella.
