Selena Gomez Had to Tell Paparazzi 'You're Kind of Scaring Me' After They Wouldn't Stop Following Her & It's Not Okay

Can we let Selena Gomez live please? Only a few weeks after the singer and actress had to call out trolls who body-shamed her after paparazzi caught photos of her in a bikini for the first time after her kidney transplant, a video of Gomez telling the paparazzi they're scaring her has surfaced — and it's unsettling to say the least.

According to Teen Vogue, a video originally captured by Pop Crave shows Selena leaving a Starbucks last week as she's bombarded by paparazzi with questions about Justin Bieber that can best be described as patronizing. As the couple is reportedly on a break, it's already pretty clear that she doesn't want to talk about it — but one particular paparazzo gets so aggressive that Gomez finally directly asks her to leave her alone.

"Do you guys just mind if I have the rest of the day?" Selena asks the paps, looking obviously upset. "You're kind of scaring me."

Instead of immediately backing off (as she should have done) the paparazzo, who seems to be pretty taken aback, offers the excuse that, "there's other guys here, it's competitive." As Selena walks to her car she can be heard offering a halfhearted "sorry" before getting in.

Sure, paparazzi are just doing a job, but when it crosses over into harassment territory, it's time to offer some respect and basic human decency — which this particular pap so blatantly refused to do after being asked directly (and rather nicely). Quick reminder that this is not how to handle the personal lives of your favorite celebs — no matter how badly you want to know whether a Jelena reunion is happening.

5 Things Every Collegiette Needs to Know About Filing Taxes

You just landed your dream job and you’re looking forward to getting some moola to tuck away for next spring break or a generous shopping excursion. But wait, isn’t there something you’re forgetting? Or maybe, you began interning last year and your parents are starting to mention a certain word more and more… Here's everything you need to know about filing your taxes as a collegiette.

1. Plan way ahead

Like, more than you would for that class essay.

The official date when tax forms should be filed and submitted changes from year to year, but it’s usually in early April. Check up around December to see when the IRS has declared Tax Day to be; for 2018, the Internal Revenue Service announced that it would be on Tuesday, April 17, 2018. Traditionally, Tax Day is on April 15 unless it happens to fall on a Saturday or Sunday, in which case the deadline is moved to the next business day.

In early January, the IRS announces an opening day—this is the date when all taxpayers can start filing their taxes. Exciting stuff, right? It’s almost like a holiday. So in 2018, tax season officially opened on Monday, Jan. 29.

Once you start filing your own taxes, you will need to keep records throughout the year, though. There’s no way you’re going to remember a donation you made last January or February, so consolidate all that information into a paper or digital file and keep adding to it! For example, you may have unreimbursed expenses from your university or job or receipts showing how much you spent on textbooks, utilities, etc. throughout the year. If you make charitable donations, that qualifies you for a tax deduction, but you need to provide qualifying documents showing you actually made the donation. By the time tax season rolls around, you should have all the information you need.

2. Know what qualifies you for deductions and credits

A.K.A. fancy words that mean you pay less taxes.

We're all broke college students, so when it comes to paying taxes, getting a refund makes a big difference. Some definitions first: deductions lower the amount of taxable money you owe, and credits directly cut your tax bill. You should refer to the official IRS website to find out specifically what you may qualify for. For example, there are tax benefits for education, so if you are using some of your income to pay for college, then the amount of money you owe in taxes may be reduced. As a helpful tip, you can use the IRS Interactive Tax Assistant Tool to check if you’re eligible for credits and deductions. It’s a 25-minute process that’s pretty similar to those college tuition calculators you may have used back in high school.

3. Understand your W-2

It’s the Holy Grail of tax forms.

Did you know W-2 stands for Employee Wage Report form? The W-2 form is issued from employer to employee by January 31 and tells the IRS how much you earned and how much was already deducted for taxes, Social Security or Medicare. If you’ve never seen a W-2 before, familiarize yourself by checking out this sample W-2. A copy of your W-2 must always be included when you file your tax forms, whether you are sending in your forms online (in tax jargon: e-filing) or physically mailing your tax forms. Always double check whether your Social Security Number (SSN) and the company’s corresponding information is correct.

4. Know which 1040 tax form to file

All this jargon is crazy, but you do need to know it.

Okay, getting into the actual tax form. All individual federal taxes should be filed on a 1040 form, but there are different types of the 1040 form: 1040A, 1040EZ and the 1040. Most college students file the 1040A form because it allows you to include information regarding income from taxable scholarships and fellowship grants, along with income from a job. You can also include deductions from paying interest on student loans and from paying tuition and college-related fees.

Similarly, the 1040EZ form is for people who have a taxable income below $100,000. Fill out this form if you are single or married but do not have any dependents (i.e. a child who you are financially supporting) and your interest income (the amount of money you receive as interest per year) is under $500.

But if your income is higher than $100,000, if you rank as self-employed or rank as a partner in a company, or you have certain shareholder status (you own a number of stocks), you will need to file the 1040 form and therefore qualify for a higher tax rate.

You will have to use your best judgment to decide which tax form to file, but the best part is that if you use a tax software and e-file, the software will have you fill out your information and automatically choose your form for you! This way you will receive the form that will help you get the most benefits. This leads us to our final point.

5. There are benefits to e-filing

It’s time to do some shopping…for tax software! But actually, we guarantee it’ll make your life a lot easier during tax season. Not only does e-filing eliminate human error, but receiving refunds usually takes half the time compared to the 21-day window you would incur if you were mailing your tax form. If your adjusted gross income (AGI) is below $62,000, then luckily you can file directly via IRS Free File.

Colby College alumna Kayla Lewcowicz recommends, "Use TurboTax! It will save your life. And don't be afraid to call your parents on this one—it's too important to mess up." TurboTax is Intuit's chief tax software, and it has a reputation of being easy to use with step-by-step instructions along the way. Therefore, it is perfect for first-timers. While you're filing, TurboTax also shows you in real time how many refunds you qualify for, and you have live access to chatting with a tax expert for any questions. And the bonus is, it has a Federal Free Edition which is, yup, absolutely no-cost. The Free Edition should suffice for anyone who is filing a simple 1040A, 1040 or 1040EZ form. Anything more complicated and you will need to upgrade to their paid version.

Other popular tax software programs include H&R Block Free Edition, TaxAct Free Federal Edition and TaxSlayer Free Federal Edition. Since you can probably make do with a basic tax program at this stage in your life, it's best to try out some of the free, bottom-tier offerings that accounting companies produce. It also helps to ask your parents, who have had years of experience at this, what software they've been using.

Breathe; you’ve just gone through a lot of information.

As Kayla says, "Forget graduation, doing my taxes was a much bigger wake up call!"

While filing taxes may sound tedious, it’s just another part of adulthood, and you may be surprised to find out how much it pays off (literally). So do your research, get advice from your family and friends, and definitely do not procrastinate when it comes to filing your tax return!

How She Got There: Sami Sweeney, Pure Barre Fitness Studios Owner & Co-Founder of 421Reset

Name: Sami Sweeney
Age: 33
Job Title and Description: Owner of six Pure Barre Fitness Studios, Co-Founder of 421Reset
College Name/Major: University of Idaho/Economics and Finance
Website:www.purebarre.com
Twitter Handle:@purebarrewa
Instagram Handle:@samisween, @purebarrewa, @421reset

What does your current job entail? Is there such a thing as a typical day?

SS: I own and operate six Pure Barre Fitness studios in the Seattle area, alongside my husband, Brandon. Our staff consists of 104 women. Our studios are open seven days a week, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. My days are filled with teaching fitness, developing and managing staff, marketing, connecting with clients, event planning, networking, ordering retail and basically hustling my face off to keep my businesses performing at an optimal level. The scope of my responsibilities changes daily. There really isn’t a “typical day” in my line of work, just an endless amount of opportunity to improve, adapt and grow.

What is the best part of your job?

SS: My response to this is two-pronged. First, my passion is helping people achieve their health and fitness goals. I genuinely love working in the fitness industry and helping people look and feel their best. But just as gratifying is owning my own business and having the autonomy to grow my brand and business in the ways I see best fit.

What was your first entry-level job in your field and how did you get it?

SS: I started teaching fitness in college at our college rec center. At this point, I was on the path to work in finance as a financial planner, or something along those lines. Teaching fitness was simply something I did for fun, to explore my love for anatomy, exercise and movement. It was this experience that taught me how much I loved teaching, leading and motivating others to work out. It was also this experience that gave me the confidence and interest to apply to be a Pure Barre teacher in Nashville, TN after I graduated.

What words of wisdom do you find most valuable?

SS: I love this quote by Gary Vaynerchuk: “You have to understand your own personal DNA. Don’t do things because I do them or Steve Jobs or Mark Cuban tried it. You need to know your personal brand and stay true to it.”  Be self-aware and know your strengths and weaknesses. You’ll be much more successful and happier in life if your career path is consciously customized for you! I also love the idea of having a personal brand. Your career goals should always be aligned with your personal brand.

What is one mistake you made along the way and what did you learn from it?

SS: I’ve made many, many mistakes along the way. The first that comes to mind is regarding staffing and failing to proactively grow my teaching team when we experienced demand for more classes. My original team was a thoughtfully selected group of six instructors, all hired and trained to run our original Pure Barre location. But as demand grew, so did the need for additional teachers. Instead of prioritizing hiring, I stretched my small staff too thin and ultimately made some hurried hiring decisions that cost me a lot of time, money and energy. Knowing when to hire and who to hire is a skill that must be developed quickly by entrepreneurs. Who you add to your team can single-handedly make or break your business.

What has been the most surreal moment of your career thus far?

SS: Last year I was selected as a Puget Sound Business Journal 40 Under 40 honoree. I was 32 years old. It was surreal to share my business experience and lessons learned as a business owner on a stage alongside Seattle’s most accomplished young entrepreneurs and business leaders across all different industries.

What do you look for when considering hiring someone?

SS: In my industry, it’s critical to have a passion to work with people. The “soft skills” count just as much as experience and training in the fitness biz. I look for outgoing, personal, warm people who are comfortable working with others.

What advice would you give to a 20-something with similar aspirations?

SS: If you’re setting out to open your own business, it’s critical that you do your due diligence. Find a mentor in the industry who has accomplished something similar to what you’re setting out to do. Ask a lot of questions. Know your competition. Know your industry. Understand the financials behind your endeavor. Be realistic with start-up expectations. In sum, research, research, research.

What's the one thing that's stood out to you the most in a resume?

SS: For me, even more important than someone’s education is their ability to hustle! I read between the lines with resumes. I greatly value someone’s ability to effectively juggle many variables at a time. A candidate who has managed to go to school, maintain a part-time job, volunteer and partake in various interests and hobbies will always beat a candidate who has only excelled in one area. These people tend to be quick learners and adaptable and willing to push through work-place adversity.

HC Wake-Up Call: Mark Zuckerberg Testifies Before Congress, Trump Cancels Trip to Latin America Over Chemical Attacks in Syria & the Obamas Won't Be Invited to the Royal Wedding

Good morning Her Campus! With a break-neck news cycle, there is no possible way for you to stay on top of every story that comes across your feeds—we’re all only human, after all.

But, life comes at you fast. So grab a cup of coffee and settle in for this quick and dirty guide to stories you might’ve been sleeping on (like, literally. It’s early.)

Mark Zuckerberg Begins Testifying Before Congress

On Tuesday, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg spent four hours in front of over 40 senators who grilled him on Facebook's recent privacy controversy surrounding Cambridge Analytica, a firm that worked with the Trump campaign and allegedly stole data from 50 million users. Throughout the testimony, Zuckerberg admitted to Facebook's mistakes when it came to protecting user privacy and promised to improve privacy on the site moving forward.

"We didn’t take a broad enough view of our responsibility, and that was a big mistake. And it was my mistake, and I’m sorry. I started Facebook, I run it, and I’m responsible for what happens here," Zuckerberg said, according to the Washington Post.

Another hearing between Zuckerberg and the House Energy and Commerce Committee is scheduled for this morning.

Trump Cancels Trip to Latin America Over Chemical Attacks in Syria

The New York Times reports that President Trump has canceled what would have been his first trip to Latin America as president amid news of a chemical weapons attack on Syria over the weekend that killed over 40 civilians. However, considering Trump's previous controversial comments about several Latin American countries and the fact that the cancelation also comes immediately after the FBI's raid of Trump's lawyer's office on Monday, the move seems rather *convenient* to some.

Welp, the Obamas Won't Be Invited to the Royal Wedding After All

Despite his close friendship with Prince Harry, a spokesperson for Kensington Palace said on Tuesday that Barack Obama will not be on the guest list for the upcoming royal wedding between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle — though thankfully, it's not a snub. As the spokesperson explained, Meghan and Harry were not required to invite world leaders to their wedding like Will and Kate were. The couple has gone with a decidedly smaller guest list and inviting only the Obamas could possibly be seen as a snub to other world leaders who were excluded from the guest list. (And let's be honest, it also conveniently allows them to avoid inviting President Trump.)

Meme of the day:

I'm just looking for someone who will look at me the way this dog looks at her, TBH.

Here’s how to get three fast and fresh festival-ready looks with a little help from Bed Head Styling.

Beach Waves

Who says you can’t bring the beach to the dessert? Not only are beach waves trendy at every festival, but you don’t have to be wearing a bohemian wardrobe to pull it off either! For swoon-worthy waves, start the Wave Artist Ceramic Deep Waver at your roots and lightly clamp a small section of hair between the barrels, hold for a few seconds and work down. If you want something a little more customized – specifically adding crimp, tousles, or definition to your waves – step in with the A Wave We Go Adjustable Waver for extra oomph. This style is, like, honestly visionary.

Crimp Waves

Crimped waves are the real star of the street style scene, so make sure to add the Waveaholic Ceramic Waver to your packing list to achieve this look. This tool works for all hair types and is the perfect way to add a sexy, tight wave to your weekend. Just start the Waver at the crown of your head, and lightly clamp a small section of hair between the barrels and hold for a few seconds, working down. Can your gypsy soul even deal with this texture?

Curly

To unleash all the Vanessa Hudgens festival queen vibes, curly and carefree is the way to go.  Get stress-free styling with the Curlipops Reverse Tapered Tourmaline Ceramic Styling Iron, a super easy hot tool to use when you want bombshell waves on the bottom but sleekness on top. The tourmaline cuts out frizz (which is literally a life saver for second-day festival hair), plus it locks in maximum shine, so you can rock your mane masterpiece from day to night. Just take a 1" section of hair and wrap it around the barrel, with the iron facing downward. Alternate curling each section left then right for a tousled look. Girl, these curls are a work of art.

Musical festivals are never short on hair inspiration. Just remember to make the maximum style impact by rocking a 'do that’s uniquely you!

Cardi B Opens Up About Why She Decided Against Abortion

After Cardi B’s conspicuous wardrobe choice at the iHeart Radio Awards last month, we’ve all been waiting to see when and if Cardi B would reveal her baby bump. Thankfully, she didn’t keep us on a cliffhanger for long, because she showed off her bump in her elegant white dress, during her Saturday Night Live appearance. As Cardi B’s recently released album, Invasion of Privacy, has us simultaneously bobbing our heads and crying about a breakup from three years ago, Cardi spoke candidly about why she decided against getting an abortion and chose to keep her baby.

During an interview on Charlamagne tha God’s talk show, The Breakfast Club which is affiliated with Power 105.1, Cardi B talked about her pregnancy and entering the world of motherdom. According toPEOPLE, Cardi used the interview to respond to the online strangers, who invaded her privacy by offering unsolicited advice about how motherhood would destroy her career.

After Cardi took some time to address the trolls, E! News notes that she did briefly consider terminating her unplanned pregnancy. Cardi B said on The Breakfast Club that she “kinda, sort of” thought about having an abortion, but ultimately, “[She] just didn’t want to deal with the whole abortion thing.” That’s completely relatable.

Nevertheless, the "Bodak Yellow" rapper told The Breakfast Club that she’s ready and excited to be a mother. “You know what—I’m a grown woman. I’m 25 years old. And it’s just like, ‘You know what? I’m a grown woman. I’m 25 years old. I’m gonna say this in the most humblest way … I’m a schmillionaire, you know what I’m saying? And I’m prepared for this’,” she said.

After all, Cardi B doesn’t believe that women need to feel pressured into choosing between developing their professional career and starting a family. “It just really bothers me and it disgusts me because I see a lot of women online like, ‘Oh I feel sorry for you, oh your career is over,” she noted. “As a woman, why can’t I have both? Why do I gotta choose a career or a baby? Like, why can’t I have both? I want both."

TMZ adds that 2018 is a momentous year for Cardi B. Not only will she become a mother this year and her debut studio album dropped on April 6, but she’ll also be performing at Coachella, and touring with Bruno Mars. While we’re still swiping right to win a free Cardi B concert, we’re definitely more excited to see Belcalis Almanzar (aka Cardi B) become a BA mother. (And we can't wait to see Cardi's baby join her and Bruno Mars on tour.)

Lindsay Ell: What It's Like to Be A Country Music Star in 2018

$

What is it like to be a female in the country music industry in 2018? Her Campus decided to ask Lindsay Ell, one of this year’s hottest new country artists to share a little about her unique sound and her journey to Billboard’s Best Country Album of 2017. The artist, originally from Canada, has always loved music and started playing the piano at age 6. But at 8-years-old, she decided rocking out to Shania Twain songs was more fun and switched to the guitar. According to Lindsay, she hasn’t stopped since and her guitar is like "another limb off [my] body now.” She plays all the lead guitar parts on her album, The Project, and loves performing on stage.

Growing up, Lindsay looked up to artists such as Carrie Underwood, Shania Twain and Cheryl Crow, who have all inspired her throughout her career. For Lindsay, Shania Twain’s “sexy and classy music” is the “epitomy of girlpower,” and she says the award-winning singer continues to be one of her role models. Lindsay has also gotten the chance to perform with another one of her idols recently, as she was part of Carrie Underwood’s all-girl band for “Dirty Laundy” at the CMAs last year, and gushed about the opportunity to perform with Underwood and show that girls can do what ever they put their minds to.

Since then, her latest single "Criminal" has been climbing the charts, and she’s been on tour with some of the biggest names in the industry. When we asked Lindsay about her unique sound and what inspired her new song, she admitted it hadn’t always been so easy. “When I came to Nashville eight years ago, it took me a minute to find my sound but since working with Christian Bush [producer for country music band Sugarland] he’s really helped me define my sound and make all the puzzle pieces fit together,” she explains.

And her success couldn’t have come at a better time, according to Lindsay. "[It’s] such a good time to be a female artist because fans are wanting to hear what we have to say and write and even though the ratios haven’t been even in the past they are evening out and its so amazing to be a part of that movement.”

For Lindsay, girl power has always been an important message to convey in her music, and she hopes to inspire her fans to follow their hearts and do anything they want. The idea of a strong and independent woman is an example she hopes to set, especially for younger fans listening to her music. And she does just that in her hit, "Champagne," singing, “I can open the door myself, but I love when you do it for me.” When discussing that line, Lindsay says it was no accident that it ended up in the song because she believes that even in a celebrity dream world with Jessica Biel, it’s still important to carry that message on. "It breaks down to women saying, yes this is how I want to be treated, and this is what I believe in and want for myself,” Lindsay says.

The artist continues, “I’m all about girl power and not being afraid to feel confident and I want that for my fans too."

And Lindsay isn’t afraid to get glammed up and show off her confidence, either. When we asked about her sleek style she notes, “I guess I would describe my style as rocker chic if that’s a thing” But the Canadian singer hasn’t always been so sure of herself, and her style has evolved along with her music. “When I first got out to Nashville I was feeling a lot of pressure to dress how other girls were dressing and wear the same shoes," she says. "But now, since I’ve gone through my identity crisis with my music my fashion has changed too. I want to be comfortable on stage and dancing around in 5-inch stiletto heels probably isn’t a thing for me.” Now, instead, she wears sneakers or wedges and says it’s so much more fun that way. Lindsay loves to express herself through fashion, and she has even found it helps her connect with her fans, too. The 29-year-old artist loves wearing blue nail polish, which has become a staple. She says fans have even started tweeting at her about it and are always sharing blue polish looks of their own.

As for her next move, Lindsay can’t wait to perform at the 2018 Stagecoach festival. “Stagecoach is one of my favorite festivals because it’s just so big! You stand on main stage and you can’t see the edge of the audience because it just keeps going and going and going,” she gushes. For this star, the California festival is a chance to have a good time and enjoy the party. "Fans know it’s a place to have a good time and take a break for the weekend, it’s going to be awesome.”

How to Stay on Top of Your Studying Before Finals Begin

$
0
0

We’ve all been there. The clock reads 2 a.m., we’re caffeinated beyond belief and finals week seems like it’s about to ruin our lives. At this point, you’re praying for a miracle, or for a fairy godmother to bless you with a semester’s worth of knowledge. Here’s how to avoid that stressful cram session.

1. Revisit the syllabi from all of your classes

The first step should be to dust off the syllabi handed out on the first day. In order to successfully survive finals season, you need to know when they are happening. Maddie Gordon, a freshman at Lehigh University, says, “I forgot about an important paper because I was too busy focusing on my other subjects. I should have looked at the syllabi more closely.” The more time you have to prepare, the higher your chances of doing well.

2. Pick out an organization method (planner, white board, app, calendar, etc.)

Remembering important dates is much more effective if you have them written down or programed to remind you about them. This is where the usefulness of a planner of some sort comes in handy. Input all exam dates, review sessions and tutoring you may have the few weeks leading up to the tests.

And if writing down your dates is not your thing, there are plenty of other options to get you organized for the big day. If you’re more of a tech type you can use any number of apps and websites to help organize upcoming dates. Theresa Sansone, a freshman at the College of New Jersey, utilizes Google Calendar. “It has helped me stay on top of my schoolwork,” she says. “Sometimes you get flustered with too many assignments, the calendar helps me prioritize what needs to be done.” You too can take advantage of her system by using a whiteboard calendar, a virtual planner, etc. The style of your organizer is up to you, and that’s a part of what makes organization universally helpful. By customizing what you want and need, you are better able to tell if reminders on your phone or sticky notes work best for you.

Related: 5 Bad Academic Habits You Had Last Year (& How to Ditch Them!)

3. Color code

To make routine dates blend in and important dates stand out, color-coding is the perfect trick. Once you have picked a preferred method of organization, the next step is to sort different subjects and activities by a variety of colors. For example, club soccer can be in blue while English is in green. You could even extend this method of organization to study practices as well. Ariella Silverstein, a freshman at Lehigh University, says, "I like color coding my study guides before tests so I know what material to look for in the textbook, and what material I don't need to revisit." This is definitely an opportunity for your creativity, but if you aren’t crafty and/or don’t have the patience, writing in different pen colors and using highlighters still does the trick.

4. Make a study plan

After you have a handle on what the next few weeks will be like, it’s important to create a plan in order to master those hellish times. We do not want mental breakdowns and cram sessions. While having pretty pen colors and ornate agendas can be somewhat of an illusion of successful study sessions, it’s important to remind yourself that organization is only half the battle to acing your exams. Blocking out time for studying should be the next course of action. Ideally, you should have about two weeks in advance to study for cumulative final exams give or take depending on the subject. That cushion of time may seem like a lot, but when you’re juggling four or five subjects, it may not be enough.

Using your well-crafted planner, block out certain hours that are devoted to studying a certain chapter of a subject. For example, under Monday, May 1st you might write, “Study for Biology chapter 2 from 5:00 p.m.- 6:30 p.m.” This way, you have specific guidelines of when and what you’re supposed to be doing. Students make the mistake of rewriting “study for bio” every single day leading up to the exam in their planners with no intention or motivation to execute because their plan is not specific. Without the specificity, the task of learning an entire semester’s worth of biology seems daunting and impossible, thus demotivating students to execute it.

Josh Newton from Rowan University mentions how he struggles with staying on top of his work without using a planner. "Unless I write specifically what I need to do that day, I usually forget. Writing down each task seems tedious but it works." Making a plan provides some direction in the super stressful weeks before finals. And with this method, you’ll be able to know how much studying you have already completed.

5. Execute the study plan (say goodbye to procrastination!)

Lehigh University’s Center for Academic Success promotes the use of planners and other hourly agendas in order to promote good study behaviors. A certified method of actually tackling those written out plans is to do things such as “setting realistic goals, and asking for help when necessary.” The following are quick tips and tricks in order to study smarter, not longer.

  • Review and revise notes soon after class
  • Take notes as you read your assignment
  • Review for exams by explaining concepts to others
  • Create sample exam questions and answer them as you study

Utilizing these five tips and tricks will definitely prepare you more for finals season. To be honest, staring at the textbook blankly and wishing for a miracle is not a valid method anymore. Take charge of your academic future and your grades will reflect it. Good luck!

Paul Ryan Will Reportedly Not Be Seeking Reelection In Wisconsin

Speaker of the House Paul Ryan has announced that he won’t be running in the next election and will be retiring in January, the New York Times reported Wednesday morning. His reasoning for this decision is that he wants to focus on being a dad and a husband and he feels ready to leave after achieving his goal for tax reform. According to Axios, Ryan’s decision was in the works since Politico reported in December “that he saw his ‘wild Washington journey coming to an end.’"

What does this mean for House Republicans, though? There is a definite scramble to fill Speaker Ryan’s seat. The New York Times reports that House majority leader, Kevin McCarthy and House majority whip, Steve Scalise, will probably be the ones to fight for the seat.

What does this mean to House Democrats? Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), House Democratic leader says in her statement, “The Speaker has been an avid advocate for his point of view and for the people of his district. Despite our differences, I commend his steadfast commitment to our country.”

As for New York Senator, Chuck Schumer, he is asking Mr. Ryan to spend the rest of his time in office to become more bipartisan. He urges, “With his newfound political freedom, I hope the Speaker uses his remaining time in Congress to break free from the hard-right factions of his caucus that have kept Congress from getting real things done. If he’s willing to reach across the aisle, he’ll find Democrats willing and eager to work with him.”

Paul Ryan’s retirement is just one of many house republicans retirements. His retirement also kicked off a roll of republican retirements including, announced just one hour after Mr. Ryan’s retirement, Rep. Dennis Ross, Republican of Florida.

The open position for speaker could mean a turn to the majority right, or be an opportunity for the Democrats to swoop in for majority. Want your voice to be heard in these elections? Get out there and vote!

A School In Pennsylvania Is Now Arming Teachers With Baseball Bats & This Can’t End Well

Millcreek Schools, in the suburbs Erie, Pennsylvania, decided to arm all 500 of its teachers with baseball bats, CBS reported. The decision comes as a response to the school shooting in Parkland.

Superintendent of the school, William Hall, said that arming teachers with bats “is the last resort, but it is an option and something we want people to be aware of.” Hall told CBS that the move was mostly symbolic, but “we're in a day and age where one might need to use them to protect ourselves and our kids.”

According to NBC, Hall’s goal was to revise the district’s school shooting response plan so that they have other options besides “hiding and waiting.”

The president of Millcreek Education Association, Jon Cacchione, told CBS, “Part of the formula now is to fight back, and so I think the bats that were provided for the staff were symbolic of that.”

NBC said that this comes after a different Pennsylvania school made headlines for arming their teachers and students with buckets of rocks as a means of protection.

Nicki Minaj Is Back, Teases 2 New Singles & I Am Not Ready

Nicki Minaj fans, you're in for quite a surprise! After months of being inactive on social media, Ms. Nicki took to Twitter on Tuesday to tease two new songs.

The "Super Bass" rapper shared a photo of herself wearing a large, intricate ball gown, surrounded by other people wearing similar outfits and somewhat creepy doll masks. The second post showed Minaj clad in a Fendi outfit in the style of Chun-Li, a character from the game Street Fighter.

Both posts had the caption: "#BarbieTingz Thursday 10amPst 1pmEst everywhere" with unicorn emojis, of course.

Her mysterious tweets come nearly five months since the "Starships" singer was last active on social media, not counting the promotional ads she posted a month ago on Instagram.

Her upcoming album is said to be epic. In an interview with Dazed last year, Minaj said the next album would be "a billion times more epic than anything 'Anaconda' could have delivered."

I don't know about you, but I can't wait to hear the rest of the album!

Sesame Place Will Become A Certified Autism Center & We Can't Wait For Everyone to Come and Play

Sesame-Street hasn’t always been a show to teach children their ABC’s and 123’s. Originally a program for low-income, urban kids, the show has expanded over its nearly 50 years to a force of social activism. While Cookie Monster still gets his sugar rushes and Big Bird’s as tall as ever, the show tackles representation by including a diverse cast of strong females, racially diverse characters, and individuals of various ability.

It’s no surprise, then, that Sesame Place, a Sesame Street-inspired amusement park, will become a Certified Autism Center. After partnering with the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards, the Pennsylvania park will be the first certified place for every family with an autistic member to enjoy. As a celebration to the end of National Autism Awareness Month, the park will open on April 28.

The park’s employees have received special training focusing on "sensory awareness, motor skills, autism overview, program development, social skills, communication, environment, and emotional awareness,” according to the park’s website. The staff will undergo training every two years to keep its certification, and new hires will go through training during their orientation.

Not only will the park include accessibility for physically disabled members, but it also has special “quiet” rooms. As the sensory stimulation can often be overwhelming, these big rooms offer a comfortable, low-lit place for guests to take a break in their play.

In the park, sensory guides will help families get a breakdown of all rides and attractions, putting all sensory stimuli on a 1-10 scale. Noise-cancelling headphones, low sensory areas, and low sensory parade viewing will also be available.

The experience is completed with the inclusion of Sesame Street characters in the park, especially Julia, an autistic girl introduced to the show last year.

Mariah Carey Reveals She Suffers From Bipolar Disorder: 'I Refuse To Allow It To Define Me'

Celebrities’ lives are virtually transparent because of persistent paparazzi and frequent interviews. Nevertheless, several celebrities have shared their most vulnerable moments with the public in hopes to help fans who might be going through similar diagnoses and changes. Joining Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato in their crusade to fight the stigma surrounding mental health, Mariah Carey detailed her journey with bipolar II disorder to help eradicate prejudice against mental health.

In an interview with PEOPLE, Carey says that she was initially diagnosed with bipolar II disorder in 2001; however, she's had an ongoing battle to accept her diagnosis and the stigma that’s commonly associated with mental health disorders.

“I didn’t want to carry around the stigma of a lifelong disease that would define me and potentially end my career. … I was so terrified of losing everything, I convinced myself the only way to deal with this was to not deal with this,” the Grammy Award-winning singer told PEOPLE. Though Carey’s fears about her bipolar disorder negatively impacting her professional life might seem unrealistic, these fears are very valid and real.

As Psychology Today reports, topics about mental health are severely underreported because casual discussions about mental health (between family, friends and other support groups) are often treated as forbidden subjects. Beyond the perpetual stigma of mental health, people with diverse mental health disorders face many fears about their mental health and how others will judge them because of their mental health. According to mindbodygreen, these fears can prohibit individuals from receiving the help they need and deserve.

In her interview with PEOPLE, Carey adds, “Until recently I lived in denial and isolation and in constant fear someone would expose me. It was too heavy a burden to carry and I simply couldn’t do that anymore… I sought and received treatment, I put positive people around me and I got back to doing what I love—writing songs and making music. As hard as this is, I also knew it was time to finally share my story."

Still, Carey doesn’t just give us intimate details about her mental health—her interview also gives us insight into how detrimental it is to receive treatment, focus on self-care and ask for help. After all, seeking treatment should be a shameless act.

Carey’s story about her journey to treat her bipolar II disorder will help demolish the stigma about mental health and allow others to open up about their own mental health stories. However, her interview details a pivotal theme: that, at one point in time, mental health stigma prevented her from accepting her own diagnosis and also delayed necessary treatments. Because Carey included her struggles with her mental health, including her triumphs, her story will show that mental health needs to be discussed in order to reclaim the stigma.

As Mariah Carey’s fans rally behind her empowering messages, Carey concludes her interview by saying, “It does not have to define you and I refuse to allow it to define me or control me.”

After all, your mental health is only one of many parts of who you are.

John Boehner Has 'Evolved' On Marijuana Legalization Issues & Is Now Advocating For More Research On The Drug

In an attempt to roll back federal regulations on marijuana laws, former Republican speaker of the House, John A. Boehner has joined a board of directors for Acreage Holdings, a cannabis company, according toThe Washington Post.

Boehner, a long time advocate and member of a party who favors strict rules against the legalization of the drug, has since come forward with new ideas on how marijuana can actually be a positive force for change.

He said, “I have concluded descheduling the drug is needed so that we can do research and allow [the Department of Veterans Affairs] to offer it as a treatment option in the fight against the opioid epidemic that is ravaging our communities.”

This statement is in stark contrast to his 2011 remarks about how the legalization of the drug would lead to higher abuse rate for all substances, including alcohol. The growing epidemic of opioid abuse has become a national issue and President Donald Trump has even declared it a public health issue — but with little to no solutions currently available, marijuana is reportedly proving to provide relief.

Acreage Holdings currently grows, processes and distributes marijuana and is hoping to, “expand their research initiatives among universities as it seeks to “demystify” cannabis,” according to The Washington Post.

Through these research initiatives and findings, Acreage Holdings and Boehner are hoping to show that marijuana can be an “exit drug” for opioid addicts and provide an alternative option for treatment. In a press release, Boehner expressed his concern and hope to remove marijuana from a Schedule 1 drug classification, that includes heroin and ecstasy and focus on the medical benefits and relief it can provide.

Critics have argued that Boehner is late to the game in advocating for the drug, but regardless of the timing, Boehner's new position is an interesting case of how hard-line opinions on different issues can evolve.
